Read up on Victoria Australia which in about September had more daily cases than Canada at about 500 per day versus 400 per day now look at the situation. Canada was within striking distance of elimination but backed off. A part of the reason given for a nightly curfew was to give police a break so they could enforce movement controls during the day including stopping travel outside of Melbourne for non essential purposes.

@j-rad2613 Nah just a free Australian ( except travel restrictions ) , not from Victoria though, my state was much more successful , so other than 1st lockdown been low restrictions since.

That's the right attitude, just like all modern military personnel are required to get many vaccines, this one occasion the normal populous is required to as well. Canada should be fine especially after the weather starts to warm by Canadian standards that is, you have a vaccination rate very similar to Australia and our opening up is going ok.

Your federal government can't without the agreement and cooperation of the provinces because not enough manpower etc. Australia our states run their own show and quite successfully but if there is a serious problem the Federal government helps out. At one point in time all state borders were shut except one, shut means if it's not essential travel 14 hotel quarantine for about $3,000 AUD if the state will let you in at all. Get your province covid 19 free including shut the border tight to get into that position and keep it shut to all infected provinces, others will follow. Any illegal entry or dishonesty with the border declaration give them prison time. Do these measures you will succeed but you need tough provincial leaders who will ignore the prime minister when he will inevitably want the border more open , because the federal government will just see loss of tax revenue from travel restrictions. Anyway best of luck and some provinces should follow what Australian states have done, not US states who literally increase the spread by locking down stuff except the border so infected people just go to counties or states with no lockdown measures increasing the spread. Your Federal government should assist provinces with manpower for border checkpoints and hotel quarantine. Our prime minister set up what he calls the national cabinet which all state leaders plus the prime minister discuss matters in a very timely manner along health people I guess.

The PM has no powers over provincial governments or the US government. So what do you expect him to do, be an insurrectionist and declare martial law and seize power of all provincial governments? You think that would go down well? Should he declare war on the US because they only let in foreigner who are Vaccinated? Trudeau isn't a king and Canada isn't an absolute monarchy. He has no power to stop mandates by provinces or the US government. He's powerless to do so in other words.

All these open border people, they could all be replaced by Latin Americans who will do the job cheaper since they're so fond of open borders. @Peglegkickboxer Canada is a functional democracy, nobody in government is holding anyone hostage , just at the provincial and federal level saving lives by having restrictions and mandates, the death toll in Canada is only 1 third that of the US on a per capita basis so clearly the governments have done a good job.

@Peglegkickboxer I am in Queensland Australia and what you described didn't happen here and we only reaching about 100 deaths per million from covid 19 and all but 8 or 9 deaths occurred this year when transition from covid 0 to an open border. You can't apply blanket assumptions. The 2 states to my south didn't do so well. Population of Queensland is about 5 million and 4 million or so had about 16 weeks lockdown and the other million less than that, schools only ever shut for one term and a couple of other weeks. I understand the greater frustration in places that didn't do so well, however can recognize the difference between bad and worse and the US is far worse than Canada. Australia and NZ have done far better but NZ in particular and Western Australia a bit slow to open up. There are subtleties as there are in Canada however I don't know the differences between Canadian provinces only that there were.

@muskokadirty2728 First of all unless the provincial borders are shut reasonably tight with compulsory hotel quarantine it can never succeed. You might bring numbers down a bit but the moment you reopen at all they will bounce back, taking half measures produces terrible results and it actually facilitates spread of the virus because the well off just cross borders from high infection areas to low infection areas as can be seen perfectly in the US. I have great sympathy for you for your partial lockdown that can never really end until/unless vaccines produce herd immunity which is a long way off. No country in the world has succeeded with a partial lockdown, Ontario and Canada will be no different. The oppression of the less well off in favour of those with means to travel of course makes people angry and damages mental health because people feel oppressed and abandoned with some truth to it. Hang in there the best you can because of what they do, if you are an average person you can't change anything so try to live with it. Best of luck.

Victoria Australia , no cases of community transmission for 8 days currently but in September was about 500 cases per day when the whole of Canada was around 400 cases per day. Seems your lockdown is approaching the toughness of the Victorian lockdown. If it is as tough and contact tracing works and not letting people in from other provinces you will be rid of covid 19 in 3 months or so.

@matchu4444 the US CDC says 300,000 excess deaths occured from January 26 to October 3 , out of this only 200,000 of those deaths involved covid 19 , so in countries that failed there tends to be a lot of people dying that would still be alive had covid 19 not been around.

@mayhem1974 It's correct to say there is no proof of the percentage reduction in spread can be attributed to a single measure when 10 measures are taken, but there is the proof if your province followed to the letter the restrictions in Victoria Australia along with enforcement etc. that you will achieve the same outcome but it could be slightly slower or quicker because of the different living conditions , local culture and weather. The governments that didn't take decisive action early on end up being the most disliked because freedoms are restricted on a continuous long term basis and often end up being tougher than those that were tough in the beginning, my state Queensland has had low restrictions in a relative sense ever since ending the first lockdown. Travel restrictions remain of course from any infected area in Australia and all international arrivals except for New Zealand with 14 days hotel quarantine. Hopefully where ever you are things get better over time.

@ripvanwinkle4532 Constitutionally it's the same with Australia and the US and the non enforced voluntary quarantine is no different legally speaking than hotel quarantine. Australia's federal government has worked with the states and set the framework , most states were the ones to close borders to other infectious states, the federal government initially didn't want that, however has provided limited support with the military, unarmed but doing things like hotel quarantine, border checkpoints and in a couple of cases provided some medical personal which obviously is very limited. Lockdown lite is the worst of both worlds, destroys business and as many deaths anyway especially with the US policy, but to do absolutely nothing like that state I mentioned it would be even worse, at least poor people can't travel because no means and this probably reduces their deaths a little. If you were in Australia you would most likely be ok with restrictions because they get results, some people still nervous though and think we will fail but that's just a psychological condition without any real basis at this stage. Mentally I think you will find Australian or New Zealanders are doing better than people in US , UK and Canada where it never seems to end and vaccines are pretty much the eggs all in one basket approach, hopefully it works but it's not guaranteed. Anyway take care and personally speaking even it seems bad it would be good for the US to lockdown properly for 12 weeks and most states would be virus free or close to it, I doubt it will ever happen though with currently 0 states willing to close the borders.

They have no reason to cover up anything at this point in time. This doesn't mean they aren't but it will be insignificant in the scheme of things, there isn't hundreds of thousands dying there, it would get out.

I could accept that you might be right if the official number is 50% of the real number, maybe even 33%, but your suggestion it is out by a factor of at least 20 seems ridiculous. Let me know where this information has come from, China is one of if not the most authoritarian large countries on the earth, locking down people and travel restrictions are not that difficult. Even Australia and New Zealand can do it and we aren't dictatorships, but in Australia we can't and haven't been as successful. New Zealand has and so have many Australian states at this point in time.

DJ BANE China , Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand didn't stop testing, proper lockdowns to contain any outbreaks and repeat for each new outbreak due to quarantine failures. Republic of Ireland plus Northern Ireland should look like New Zealand, similar population size and an island, but decided not to stop entry of the virus and keep borders open without hotel quarantine for returnees or essential workers, that was your governments choice , no one else to blame.

Lots of lefties in the comments, I am sure they supported CHAZ in Seattle because this is no different, in fact this is worse in many ways blockading a significant proportion of an entire country's trade. Or is there something else at play something like 2 wrongs make a right noting the US connection to the current Canadian problems.

Yeh mate 75% of the population of Australia have less restrictions now than Sweden, it's so tough. Victoria has had some problems and are going to fix them I believe so they can join the rest of us.
