"Sold for scrapping". [Morocco breathes a sigh of relief]
173
It was me, my torpedoes were the best of any Navy in the world. But as I'm a peaceable man, I refused to sell them to any of the warring parties. Instead, I gave the design to Andorra, with the promise they'd only use them for self defense. And as they're landlocked...

I'm sitting here in a combination of awe, disbelief, admiration of the cumulative resourcefulness, and shame at my utter incapacity to have measured up to any of these men. What a story, what an accomplishment by these [for once, properly used word] heroes!
76
I'm not a Kiwi, but as a Bruce McLaren fan is it ok if I tag along?
68
The Chihuahua? Did it take a bite out of the sterns of neighboring ships? Edit: It seems the correct spelling is "Chiwawa".
31
The picture at 6:14 is almost painterly in its composition - a dramatic shot, setting aside the terrible situation for the crew and rescuing ships. War does give us plenty of iconic pictures, this one I'd not seen before.
29
I'm so early that pigeon bombs are still considered high-tech!
21
@ Hmmm... [scribbles notes furiously]
19
@ Combine a tunnel-borer and a Grand Slam and we've got something.
18
It's a big, happy ship that just wants to reach out and give you a hug!
17
I'm so early for this video that the Kamchatka still has all its binoculars...
16
@TwigstarA How else are you going to deal with Drop Bears?
16
@SilentCyRadioShow My understanding is that all of NZ is really a film set, and most of the people living there are actors. But they can't fool me, I'm on to their tricks!
14
I'm so early that I'm still an egg in the sand rather than a turtle.

I have such a sense of pride over the combined strengths of the US and British forces in the late Pacific War, mixed with some dread that we may soon have significant conflict with a different Asian power (take a guess), yet with vastly less logistical and manufacturing resources. We were mighty in the mid-20th century, can we rise to the needs again?
13
"Some gave all..."
12
This might explain all the olives I found in the basin of the drydock after pumping out.
10
@nachtschattenmacher The chuck key alone must weigh 500kg!
10
They had the temerity to go into the environment. And as everyone knows, the environment tends to make fronts of ships fall off.

The Kiwi Job...

These are gripping retellings of the stages of invasion, and fill me with awe at the combination of luck, skill, and determination that led to success of the USN and RN fleets. The sacrifice of the marines, soldiers, and sailors is astonishing, and one hopes will not be repeated in our time. But history has its way, and some leaders are happy to discard others lives without concern. Russia and China, I'm looking at you...
8
Drach may be referring to how aggressive China is being with ships, both Naval and commercial, operating in waters that the rest of the world considers open, but that China claims as their own. For instance, recently they injured some Australian naval divers who got purposely hit by a very powerful sonar blast.

@Genessyss You're welcome to read a book called "Romania's Holy War - Soldiers, Motivation, and the Holocaust", by Grant T. Harward. You might find that your assumption of Romanian purity is a little misguided. And that's just one reference. Here's a tip: If you have history, you'll find some of it is unpleasant.
7
@emmgeevideo Since you're an expert in the field (I've only been working in manufacturing and scientific R&D for almost five decades), I'll bow to your statement of "baloney". Or maybe I'll just discount what you've said, as you're clearly ignoring what I actually said and substituted your own strawman. WW2 was a matter of volume, now we rely on specialized tech and precision. With the introduction of drone warfare, volume is back as a major factor in warfare. Swarms used to overwhelm defenses will defeat even our capabilities (unless we've really done miracles with laser anti-drone tech). China has vastly more drone manufacturing ability than the US, ignore that reality at your own peril.

But a ship armored with chocolate would rapidly find itself denuded due to the crew being somewhat peckish...
6
@scottgiles7546 I identify as a rivet, and speaking for rivets, we agree! I shall now take a POP at Heike (whose names sounds suspiciously like a Japaneses ship...).
5
He didn't skip 397, it was purposely passed by. You see, the number 397 has long been a numerological curse in Drachinifel history, dating back to Great to the nth Grandpappy Drachinifel losing the family fortune in the Crash of 397. It was terrible, and took the clan centuries to recover.
5
Love the Modern Art(?) Dazzle camouflage at 6:14.
5
Just taking the opportunity for more data, both on the vulnerability of deck-stored materiel, and specific blast damage to those vehicles.
5
His song "American Pie" did pretty well in the charts, too!
5
That's quite a while ago. Did you manage to keep them, or did they get lost over time?
5
@Genessyss So you're describing every square inch of the surface of the Earth when there's been more than one party present. Do tell... Now, who's ox are you responsible for goring? Tell me, your people are completely innocent, yes?
5
Did their cruisers have 8" catapults? "What are these, catapults for ants?"
4
I was a little surprised to hear that the four ships transferred to the West German Navy were given names of ships from WW2. They'd have been a bit more "politic" to have not used such loaded reminders...
4
Yes please on more "engineering level" Friday content. Regarding phase transition on early armor steels, wasn't it the (among other elements) addition of nickel that made the greatest improvement on ductility (irrespective of actual hardness) over temperature excursions?
4
@benwilson6145 Yes he has! Vogon poetry...
4
Oh, don't get the few rational members of the USA started on this topic. We're doing our best to survive until 2026...
4
@Genessyss The Japanese are owed little apology. Their acts of barbarism during their prosecution of their war aims are well known, as were also seen in other theaters. If you have specifics you're free to list them, but such is the nature of war. Now, would you like to speak to what your people have done in similar circumstances? There is unlikely to be any country with clean hands, unfortunately. And those that might are frequently preyed on (Ukraine).
4
America's ship and airplane (and tanks, artillery, etc.) manufacturing capability in the 1940's was unmatched, and can be said to have won WW2 for the Allies. We have given away much of this capacity, and the likely enemy in a new large conflict has taken it on. Unfortunately this could lead to events going nuclear pretty quickly if another major war occurs.
3
Thanks, I appreciate the brief relief from the current war against rationality being waged in my country.
3
How was life on board? No shots fired in anger, I'd imagine...
3
Perhaps you could find the worksheets and send facsimiles to Drach? I'm in manufacturing, so have some interest myself on the materials properties...
3
I will never cease to be astounded by the logistics of the Pacific war, nor the bravery of the men who fought in it. Thanks for this retelling of part of the effort, Drach.
3
There's always money for billionaires, but never enough for the common good and history. I wonder why that is?
3
@Genessyss Still waiting for you to expound on why Romanian war crimes during WW2 are so easy for you to dismiss. Edit: I see you made a brief, dismissive response to that particular episode. You've been quite voluble on the matter, so I didn't see it at first. But given that it seems you're more interested in hearing yourself type than in anything else, I'll leave you to it. Far be it from me to dissuade a man from his hobby... [P.S. - not British. American. Was proud of that, but since the recent election much less so]
3
This video sadly lacked any information on the galleys of these ships, and the master cooks who manned them. Did they, for instance, have knives being tossed around during preparation, or food that was unnervingly sentient?
2
@joshuapasquale11 No worries. I tried to find out if there was any connection between the two spellings, and Google was not very cooperative (it's gone downhill).
2
Let's hope they don't have to reactivate this ship if the Red Bear gets too (much more) aggressive.
2
How much rum has one drunk?
2
If that ship could make 88 knots it could really go back to the future!
