or an outrageous french accent!
10
they made these with tons of jigs and fixtures but still its crazy what people were able to machine back then
9
@lairdcummings9092 I think Ian has said the ww2 thomsons were harder shooting than some of the other variants given the changes made to it
9
no, spain didn't recognize international copyright just national copyright so you could just make copies of anything in spain, now selling those things elsewhere was where people would have gotten in trouble
9
1930s hardware stores were WILD
9
@fr4ct1v09 probably not a great idea to have completely unregulated firearms, the issue is the closure of the machinegun registry, that was done by the hughes amendment
9
think Ian did a thing a while back where he had pistols that basically were put together by occupied factories just for the GIs that occupied it to take home
9
probably less glamorous than you think. they likely bought it in the 1990s
9
right, there's no way you're using half of those
9
@sullivanrachael ya I think the problem with dramatic changes was that you'd have to get plans, jigs, samples, and gauges out to the factories as well as any new equipment and training each time you wanted to do a dramatic modification like that
9
PanzerKatze oh he knows about the gun, just not the who where and why
9
wow ian has come a long way, especially camera work
9
seems like the 1911 would have been a terrible gun to copy as a cheap weapon.
9
12:49 Naughty: Elbonian small arms
9
"Look mein fuher I have a weapon that will win the war for good! now If I can have 600 tons of tungsten, 50,000 tons of copper, 4 million liters of gasoline...
9
seems like he was trying to work around black powder fouling but then smokeless came around
8
there was a lot of german smgs being used by tankers, though I read an anicdote that one tried equipping an mg40 and almost got shot up by friendly troops out of instinct so ditched that
8
seems like the problem was more there were specifically bad revolving rifles (some ian has featured!) that gave the whole class a bad name. there is legitimate concern about how to hold it though, but that's more drill and training
8
@nigelmchugh5541 idk the belgians seem to know have a pretty good idea of how to make guns
8
gotta love the spite that went into these. I love the look of tubular pistols all around
8
its like they looked at this thing and said "Nein, it must have more machining time!" so they made the threads finer and longer
8
An example of when someone patent scummed so hard they actually screwed themselves
8
al the buffer is clearly not working all that much and the bolt is maintaining a lot of inertia and is bouncing off the back of the receiver instead of coming neatly to a stop and being brought forward by the spring. So the thing speeds up as it goes along
8
can't be the worst gun there because I'm pretty sure Karl brought a worse gun which literally can't hit anything
8
more likely someone has one in a collection and has the money and time to write the ATF a nasty letter. like Ian said, nobody is really sure how many exist
8
@natedunlop1631 there has been some machine guns focused on ultra high fire rate that tried that. The issue is as always, what to do with the excess heat you're normally dumping out the barrel with a case, and is it really worth it.
8
italy, always 10 years early to every war and 10 years out of date when it happens
8
sadly he parted ways with his vickers a few years back
8
it was really really hard to just march from nowhere to nowhere and fight an entire battle. Sherman's march is about as far as Napoleon's march to moscow and these guys were just walking through woods and fields
8
@mrmors1344 my guess is they'll br going to ukraine which is sort of ironic
8
@milamber319 ball bearings can be accurately made and sorted using fairly simple machinery
8
"FIRING!" doink "RELOAD RELOAD RELOAD!"
7
tbf, when isn't there an ammunition shortage
7
the only issue, and its more of a really old gun issue, is that nickel finish eventually fades really bad
7
its really well made for a one-off though
7
the M1 kind of makes sense, there's still some svt's kicking around, so the m1 is just a bit older
7
"Went into germany" with guns blazing
7
idk, jmb was more of a mechanics guy, he left the manufacturability to his partners. He'd certainly be messing around with a lot of different locking mechanisms and using high speed cameras
7
Seems like a funny counter to Han's C96 based blaster.
7
"Wave of nationalism" doesn't do it credit. this looks like a great book though especially with just how many examples of bizarre organizational swords you cited
7
pluto is not a pistol
7
oooh its not good to hide stuff on discovery it usually doesn't end well
7
still surprises me that nobody thought of plywood furniture except the germans who had no real choice.
7
probably somehow, those armored russian trains from the pre-revolution era. their ministers may be corrupt but they're amazing at obtaining what they want.
7
Something about this particular example of this gun being outdated when it was new seems totally relevant today still
7
@barttorbert5031 the problems are not intuitive and often are just bizarre like a tiny sliver of metal being the difference between full function or garbage
7
concept yes, but there's been concepts for nuclear powered cars, both wouldn't get past any sort of practical design phase. There's a more realistic concept of requiring an officer to wear a ring with the rf tag in it, and people who opposed even that said what if the person uses the officer's hand to shoot him, which is like....again beyond what you could ever design around
7
stoner was right in at the death-knell of the old arsenal system
7
OvertravelX don't forget to make it a simple blowback regardless of the caliber. .45 blowback? no problem!
6
they would probably have used fairly minimal amounts of machining to do this but you would be hard pressed to see any sort of differences between old machining and older machining they didn't blue it either
