Prof. Genki Especially this part contradicts Marxist ideas.
The common denominator of all Grundtvig's pedagogical efforts was to promote a spirit of freedom, poetry and disciplined creativity, within all branches of educational life. He promoted values such as wisdom, compassion, identification and equality. He opposed all compulsion, including exams, as deadening to the human soul. Instead Grundtvig advocated unleashing human creativity according to the universally creative order of life. Only willing hands make light work. Therefore, a spirit of freedom, cooperation and discovery was to be kindled in individuals, in science, and in the civil society as a whole.

Giovanni Figueroa I know you really want to believe that the east was a veritable paradise. But market reforms did not happen immediately, nor was the governments overthrown on the very day the Iron curtain fell. I went there just immediately after to see how things were.
Both sides in the Cold war committed acts of genocide, overthrew local rulers, regimes and so on, both sides engaged in support for cruel local tyrants who sought to gain favor as to remain power, those wars were not fought for world revolution by the Communists, they were fought to control strategic resources and commercial choke points.
A case in point of how little the ideology of the regime had on the different actors foreign policies are the overthrow of the Greek monarchy by the CIA or the Chinese invasion of Vietnam.
In terms of populations genocided within the different communist regime, do not delude yourself, Tunguts in China, Chechens in the Soviet Union, Hmong in Vietnam, the list is long and to mention all the ethnic groups here would be a very long list.
Then there is off course the persecution of religious groups as forces of the reactionaries which also would take quite a few lines of text to summarise and tally.
Do the secret services in democratic parliamentary system spy and manipulate their own populace for the executive in service of large corporations, yes they do, do the same services run a gigantic network of blackmailed citizens and indoctrinate children to report the thought crimes of their parents, no they don't, but in your Marxist paradise this was and is the case in Cuba, China, North Korea and Vietnam still.
Do we operate a insane system of labor camps and reeducation facilities for political prisoners, no we don't, do we have a prison industrial complex that exploits the labor of petty criminals, yes we do and so did the communists countries but on a far larger scale than you could possibly imagine.
Here's a left wing "hero" explaining the cause of the dumbing down of the populace of the USA, if you require some one to blame for the unenligthened citizenry, blame him and his cohorts as well.

As to the point of an exceedingly small number of dissidents you mention being a small number, what precise small number are you talking about, in the real world communists murdered more human beings for the crime of being reactionaries/dissidents/counter revolutionaries than Parliamentarist democracies and Fascist autocrats combined from 1917 to 1990 did in colonial and imperial wars.
Socialist economies did not fail because of embargoes, they did not fail because of lack of resources of any kind, they failed because in a society of enforced equality the exceptional human being is eliminated because that persons mere success proves the fallacy of the model or if such an individual is not murdered it is because he or she conforms and thus automatically neutralises all innovation or technological progress only in the early stages while sufficient intellectual capacity remains can the system survive. This contradiction between the technological requirements for Communism to succeed an its inability to facilitate such progress makes it go into a spiral of stagnation.
After a while arts no longer creates new expressions because any new art would by definition either be complimentary or critical, in the case of complimentary art the problem remains, it does not create a new form of artistic expression, critical art will automatically be considered counter revolutionary in its very nature by the government because any critique by an artist would by a critique of the supposed perfect society and thus exposed the inbuilt flaws of the supposed utopia.
Finally there is the generational psychological impulse of the young to rebel against the old, the gods killing their young in every myth across the globe is no accident, the younger generation has throughout human history rebelled against the old. but how can there be rebellion in paradise and so the communist state again will deem the young counter revolutionaries with predictable homocidal results.

Fox Ace
A degree of equality, that was my words, complete equality is impossible because and I really have to stress this we are not all identical robots.
Social Darwinism exists whether we like it or not, we can control it's severity to a degree, but people are born with a different set of genes and with a different background based on mainly the factors of geography and wealth.
Murder is a crime.
Bullying is not a crime.
Many things which one individual considers to be criminal are not crimes.
How will you determine what is bullying and what is deserved ridicule.
Or what is just taking the piss or bullying, let's say you have someone like myself, I work as a stonemason, so things are more shall we say rough than for instance a professor in sociology is accustomed to, my everyday vocabulary might seem like bullying to him, should I be penalised for this?
Or in the case were another individual heaps scorn and derision on me for my everyday speech calling me uncouth, should this individual be penalised?
In this world some people are assholes, but most people are not assholes all the time, but almost everyone has at some point been the asshole of the hour.
If you make being an asshole a crime then you will make us all into criminals.

Fox Ace French revolution, the ideals of liberalism won and lost, liberalism changed to fit reality.
And so did conservatism.
What are the most successful nation states on the planet by the factor of economic equality located and in what context did they come into being.
Advent of the nation state, Bismarck et al
A revolution such as the one Marx imagined can only be successful if the entire planet changes at once, every single individual have to agree, every single group must be convinced of it's merits and that is impossible.
How are services exchanged in Marxism.
With an appeal to altruism!
Answer that, you can't, flaw, followed by break down, followed by coercion followed by totalitarian rule.
Only flawless identical human beings can exist in utopia, we are not without flaw.
We are not identical.
Post scriptum: The history lesson was entirely unnecessary.
Hobsbawm is available for even a humble peon like me.
The Marxists view of history as per usual focus on class without understanding the basic human condition.
