The Communist party is the main opposition but the majority of Russians wish to restore the USSR and rightly or wrongly see Putin as a means to do that, if elections are free after Putin is gone then I guarantee the communists will win.

  47. Aleksandr Korneevskii No, Lukashenko was a good president in the 90s but I agree his time has passed. But he is still preferable to oligarchs and western control. In Russia we went the full way towards capitalism and we were rewarded with poverty and misery, I still have to send money to my family back there. Belarus will lose the few benefits it kept from the soviet times if it moves towards the west.

We don’t know if the majority of the people want change, I saw a left front study that showed only about 2% of Minsk labourers showed up to protest but it may be wrong. In Russia we were told that everyone supported Yeltsin and capitalism but it was a lie. I’m not sure if you yourself are from Belarus but if you are please just be careful, western ‘freedom’ is not what you think.

Expecting everyone who doesn’t support change to also be out there is ridiculous as well, look at Venezuela everyone said that the opposition had major support when in reality they only protested in rich areas and the pro government rallies were much bigger. You can’t just claim to have majority support for a very divisive thing without evidence.

The movement is led by pro EU, pro NATO, pro US right wingers that fly the flag of Nazi collaboration, it is already doomed. They are simply trying to move NATO all the way up to Russia and this will only end in disaster for all of Europe. I understand why people are out protesting but they’re being played for fools. I would support a genuine independent anti Lukashenko movement but this is a colour revolution and we’ve seen how wrong they go 1000 times.
