  4.  @SouthernGentleman  Grant and Sherman were out in the West and they were having numerous successes. The 13th Amendment was passed by Congress in January of 1865, by then it was pretty clear that the south was done for. It was fully ratified by 27 of the 36 required states on December 6th, about half a year after the last Confederate general surrendered.
