@hookflash699 this is not irrational at all. Not wanting to put a technology that is developed by an unstable organization which is ran by politically radical engineers is not just reasonable it's actually a good policy. Adopting a technology one must consider the long term adoption and maintenance of a technology. Rust has been alienating engineers for as long as they've existed.

They got hardware level backdoors. They don't even need the kernel. They have write ups leaked about how they can exploit these backdoors remotely without an Internet connection.
64
My question is how did they know the pagers were only going to Hezbollah targets and not innocent civilians. Pretty interesting stuff.
41
@No-mq5lw the CoC isn't all of a sudden null because Linus is upset. It should apply equally to him as well.
40
@SterileNeutrino maybe? But no proof of that. They use the frequencies that your cpu and ram gives off when operating and basically use that to sniff memory and instructions. Plus there's tons of proprietary undocumented cpu modules that does who knows what.
25
Most protest forks don't live long. But those issues you mention are not insurmountable. I hope they do well and prove a point. They have a lot of momentum behind them. Only time will tell.
20
They've really forgotten what the Free in Free and Open means.
19
@Un_Pour_Tous bro you're deranged. I'm citing the Snowden leaks and you bring up Trump? Take a break from politics and ground yourself.
16
@eriness nobody here is being disingenuous. You just disagree and are trying to discredit anyone who has different ideas than you. You're not smarter than everyone else here and your world view isn't fact. Nobody is arguing that the FS wasn't problematic. The video is discussing the weaponization of the CoC which is a pattern of behavior that the Linux Kernel team regularly partakes in and common trend within the open source space.
16
@SXZ-dev the word "open" is not synonymous with "available." Even in philosophy the term "open" has deeper meaning. Open meaning not the property of any group or individual.
15
If it's not important enough for you to write, it's not important enough for me to read. We're going to be living in a world where we use AI to expand bullet points to full messages only to use AI to boil down that full message back down to bullet point when read.
15
Browser based DRM is silly. As long as the media is playable in the browser an extension can be used to slurp up the footage despite the real time rolling encryption/decryption.
15
Why can't we just say Mosad? Is that not allowed to be said or something?
15
@fltfathin This is factually untrue. The only way this is true is if you discard and redefine the definition of gender which is a concept that has been tied to biological sex for as long as language has existed. Gender and pronouns are a tool of society to describe the practical differences between the sexes in language. The campaign to make gender an abstract term with no concrete objective meaning only goes to harm actual women. For example, ever wonder why we have gendered bathrooms? It's not to protect men. Gendered bathrooms exist because society recognizes the biological differences between men and women that make women more vulnerable to physical force due to them being generally weaker than men. Because of these practical differences society logically concluded that women need a safe space to conduct their business that is separate from men where otherwise they'd be put in a potentially compromising situation. When you refuse to recognize the real differences between the sexes for the sake of calling someone who is confused about their identity by their preferred pronouns and go to treat them like actual women will inevitably harm and take away opportunities from actual women.
14
The purpose of pronouns was never to "express" ones identity. That is an entirely a product of post-modernist abstractionist thinking.
13
oblivikun they can read and execute memory which is all a state actor needs.
11
@redactado266 rules for thee but not for me. Just because you acknowledge the fact that he does not follow his own rules does not mean that he is free from criticism. If he intends to impose rules on others he should first follow them himself.
9
@gunt-her if a term accurately describes the relationship between different parts of a system then it is defacto appropriate. Only when ideologues prescribe additional meaning artificially does it become "insensitive" or "inappropriate."
9
@redactado266 right because that's totally relevant to the conversation. Why are you defending him so much? You on his payroll or something?

@justanothercomment416 half of my comments don't show up either

I don't think he was suggesting anyone needs to bend backwards. It seems there are some Linux developers who have a cult like backing of C and C++ who do not want to support rust for no good technical reason. It's political sabotage. I don't care either way, I'm not a Linux or Rust dev but that's what it appears to be from the outside.
7
I would not be surprised if Red Hat were to come out and state that by not affirming the pronouns of the trans individual that he committed actual violence against them and therefore is not allowed to be part of the free desktop org.
7
@Jan-gl7mn I left a previous comment that YouTube deleted. Yes, these details were released in the Snowden leaks.
7
@drownthepoor I agree with you but sometimes taking advantage of the system they put in place for personal gain is better than being a target otherwise. Why not take money from these people? It'll go to a better place if it's in your bank and not theirs.
7
Honestly, Safari is more relevant than Firefox for browsers
7
I'm not sure why maybe because of the recession but most investors and banks have removed ESG requirements. Not sure what Mozilla is trying to achieve here. They must be targrting a very specific investor group.
6
@novaTopFlex idk man, Linus says I shouldn't use Linux because I'm a right of socialist.
6
@justanothercomment416 digital thought police. YouTube is terrible
6
@JodyBruchon matrix is close. Their decentralized messaging bus is pretty great. It doesn't integrate great with anonymization tools like tor though. From what I understand is it is being worked on. But the idea of decentralized home servers that manage identity independently that sync between each other is the future for all decentralized messaging bus system.
5
I think it is useful to differentiate between open source, open model, and open training data.
5
@ShayneHartford it's both. Linus regularly violates the same CoC he uses as justification to ban individuals from contributing to the kernel.
5
Is it always jews? No. Is it frequent enough to form a noticable pattern? Yes, and that is worth discussing even if you don't agree that it is the race/religion that is the cause. The question of why the individuals in power who push subversive policies like the EFFs are frequently a particular race and if there is some environmental, societal in-group bias, or some other factor that causes this is worth discussing. For the record, I'm an individualist and judge each person as an individual but that wont stop people from calling me a racist regardless of my policy to not let race or other uncontrollable factor alone influence my opinion on an individual.
5
He's like the nerdy version of your dad that went to get cigarettes and never came back 😢
5
"Secure" is subjective. It all depends on threat model and implementation.
5
@BenjaminScherrey or they could just not comply with an order that doesn't apply to them.
4
The people who moderate nix are pretty terrible. People who maintain and use nix are pretty cool.
4
@SCP-1974-A_CLASS-EUCLID ladybird engine will be pretty good once it has time to cook. I probably still won't use the browser itself though because it's built with gtk which is just terrible.
4
Some of the best. He is very well connected and knows his stuff. Very famous tax lawyer.
3
The majority of backing for Linux is corporate. Get them to care and it'll be gone otherwise they don't care about us.
3
It exists in /dev/null if that makes you feel better
3
@5omebody third person they is not gender neutral. It's gender ambiguous. There is a difference. They being used a singular is used in casual English but is informal. I'm really not interested in delving into the nuances of American English when the point is not about language.
3
@5omebody that certainly is your opinion. The only reason you hold that opinion is because it aligns with your ideology so unless you can justify the base ideology I'll find no value if your opinion.
3
What does "fundamental truths that transcend mere facts" even mean. If something is fundamentally true then it is fact.
3
@Myname-l3h I'm fully aware that I cannot force Linus to do anything. He is still a hypocrite and deserves the criticism he receives. What is your point?
3
Didnt Stallman advocate for inappropriate relationships with minors?
3
@drumboy02 I don't think Devault actually cares. I think he simply wants to find anything that can damage Stallman and leverage it against him regardless of if it's relevant to his actual cause.
3
As nice and cordial the interviewee was he still is a racialist. Instead of taking advantage of the opportunity grants and direct black people towards them as a mission he'd rather spread influence and use his race to do so.
3
Zimbabwe? I think its pronounced Rhodesia.
3
@nephatrine regardless of if it's a problem the solution should never be to lower the skilled based barrier to entry. Agreed?
3
Your observation is very telling. Even companies with massive DEI still cant reach their desired levels of "diversity" because there isnt enough skilled engineers with the "correct" type of skin color to meet their standards.
