I flew on Delta enough to get their credit card… and it quickly became apparent I would never earn enough points for even a discount on a flight, let alone a free flight unless I flew a lot more often… which I couldn’t afford. But I did find I could use the points I had to buy an expensive Kitchenaid stand mixer for free after I got married. 🤷‍♂️

Below two streets (depends on which side of Central Park you are on) in Manhattan the ConEdison Steam System both heats AND cools thousands of buildings and it all originates from the 14th St power station in Alphabet City. It’s a “waste” byproduct from the gas fired steam turbines, they pressurize the steam (which cooks it at over 1000F (538C)) and send it out in a network of severely aging steam pipes. That classic “New York street” in movies and TV with the big orange and white striped pipe venting steam? That’s a real thing, it’s a temporary solution to stop hot steam from burning people and cars until a full repair is made. (Trust me, you do not want to get burned by this pressurized steam, it will burn down to bone.)

  22. @ The 2nd avenue subway is being overbuilt and under built at the same time: unnecessarily deep stations, with a full mezzanine that makes little sense and only 2 tracks, which reduces the number of trains per hour significantly.

  23. The City of New Orleans is the exception because the freight lines are on parallel tracks for a good distance, so they never get in the way of the Amtrak trains. The Sunset Limited used to start in Florida, but damage from a hurricane was never properly repaired by the freight company (not fixed up to the minimum standards Amtrak needs for safe operations) that owns the tracks, and they claim there’s no room in their schedule to add in Amtrak trains anyway. Locals that WANT Amtrak to return have filmed just how little rail traffic actually runs.

  28. That new airport design includes a brand new apron and facilities on the other side of the runway, probably to accommodate all the larger private jet traffic. But it also shrinks the commercial terminal. So who benefits more, the commercial airlines being able to squeeze in larger jets, or the FBO getting a bunch of new aircraft types?

  40. I think the days of most business travel are over, as everyone has gotten used to using video conferencing for meetings. Why spend on expensive travel when you can just call in from your office and have someone carry a cell phone around to show you the thing you would have gone to see in person.

  42. The high cost of Concorde was also because of the speed of the flight, which no one else could match. It was also loud a subsonic speeds, because it basically ran on four jet fighter engines and used afterburners for take off. (I’ve seen Concorde on it’s departure climb fly over me, and you could definitely hear it before you could see it, but it got louder and louder before you could see it, much louder than even the loudest subsonic plane flying at the time.

I think the miss on getting a street race in (or at least adjacent to) New York City is still a miss for F1… was that track in Weehawken actually a good idea though… probably not, though it had some wicked elevation changes. the need for a permanent paddock building really hurts their chances around here as… where is there enough real estate, and could FIA actually afford it? Formula E ran in Brooklyn by the parking spot for the Queen Mary 2, but the paddock was a bunch of temporary party tents in a big circle… yikes.
