And the in 1982 Ford called their new light pickup truck Ranger!

…but Dodge sold a mini-van here called the Caravan… 🤯

GM killed off Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Saturn to keep the company afloat… maybe they should have kept one of them in case Cadillac couldn’t survive more than 20 years.

“Look at this trunk, you can fit three bodies in this trunk.”

I think the little eyebrows are intakes for the dashboard vents (aka cheap air conditioning, works great when the car is moving. Stuck in traffic… not so great.)

The ending reminds me of Delorean, no annual design updates, cost more than anything on the market, some radical elements were not a huge draw to the public overall (stainless steel body, gull wing doors, rear engine)

My old neighborhood in Brooklyn used to hold an annual car show, as a kid was I impressed by the rare Ferrari or the rare Lamborghinis? No… I went nuts for the Delorean! And I kept seeing it around even long after the car show ended… the owner actually DROVE it… and then I saw it again after a few years… with the engine all ripped apart at the local “Import” mechanic because it needed new fuel injectors… It took about a month before it drove again because I’m betting finding replacement parts for a French/Swedish motor from 30+ years ago isn’t easy. (Even with DMC of Houston being around.)

My uncle kind of collected cars from this era, before he had health problems and sold everything to buy himself a Cadillac XLR of all things. He had a 442 convertible, but it was HELL for him to sell it because everyone wanted the hard top version instead. Go figure.

What if the EV-1 wasn’t killed out back behind GM’s barn? What would the 2022 EV-1 look like? Would it be beating Tesla?

Funny I got an ad for “build your new EV car company in Ontario” during the part about New Brunswick.

Trapped in a car with gull-wing doors… this did happen to Johnny Carson… in his brand new Delorean… because the battery died in shipping and when the car stalled on the freeway, the electronic door locks had no power…. And there was no manual override. Remember, to save weight, the part of the side windows that rolled down was teeny-tiny… and I believe they were also electric powered. It really did not help that Johnny was a major investor in Delorean!

Before the reveal I’m going to guess Trabant (or Fiat 124/Lada Riva)

I currently live across from a funeral home, they have new-ish Cadillac funeral cars, and the extended “limo” for the family. Haven’t seen flower cars in decades though. We did have a police department funeral for a high ranking member, the amount of cop cars from all over, vans, busses, and a formation helicopter flyover that shook the building like nothing else before or since was crazy! Of course they also closed the boulevard, which really made for an awful day for everyone as the streets around are all mostly one way or narrow two-way.

I know about 5 years prior the $30 grand price of a Delorean DMC-12 was seen as “too expensive”.

I dated a girl whose Aunt drove a PT Cruiser, retro outside, cheap plastic inside.

My cousin bought a Toyota Sienna when she had her second kid… she looked at a Pacifica and decided it was hot garbage. My other cousin has the Honda Odyssey and hates it, but he has 3 kids and it hauls all their stuff.

My Aunt had a Citation II (brown 3 door), if my uncle didn’t know how to fix cars, that thing would have not lasted as long as it did.

Agreed, but now the difference between economy and premium is usually “sporty” seats, the suspension package and drivetrain upgrades… there’s no way we’ll see vinyl top and Oprah windows again. I have seen quite a few BMW M fakes though (the grill stripes were colorful tape!)

Jay Leno has a restored Corvair truck with the ramp-side, it’s unique, useful, but weights a TON compared to a tailgate. (I hope Jay recovers and is back showing off more automotive history soon.)

American here, before I was born my dad bought a brand new Chevy Malibu Classic 2-door with a V6 engine. It may have been small, but it was a heavy beast, and the suspension was very “American” (floaty). This was after he tried to buy a Datsun, only for the transmission to explode on the way home. He had it towed back to the dealer and got his money back.

Recent automotive article: American farmers are importing Kei pickups for use around their land. So someone is trying to sell these here, though US laws are weird about them, and some states will only accept them as “off-road” vehicles like an ATV.
