Amazing how Ledwidge has become sobre and realistic. In 2022-2023, he used to froth at the mouth and either rail against Putin or proclaim Ukrainian victory. Now he knows the real position. It is better to be honest instead of being held up as a lying fool. There are still a number of British military 'experts' like Michael Clarke and Sean Bell who are peddling delusions.

Further, Sir Putin has sowed divisions in the trans Atlantic alliance, that is why you are unable to speak in one voice. Victor Orban is one of the few Europeans who predicted the outcome correctly. He says now the war is lost because : the US has conceded Ukraine cannot be in NATO and Ukraine has lost land. Strategically, that is the worst possible outcome. Ukraine could have to all including Crimea if it had stayed with its original neutrality. Russia has ended western hegemony - that is the scale of its achievement. That is why you are mentally disoriented.

@DrStrangelove-w9w Fellow, Trump does not want to waste money funding a war that is lost. The west does not have the arms, that is why it is asking for a ceasefire. Putin intends to keep talking, but he knows the Ukrainian problem can only be settled by military means through a comprehensive defeat of Europe.

There is nothing strange. He was a 'Ukraine is winning' man in 2022-2023 but now realises Ukraine has lost, US support will end, and the Europeans are incapable of turning things in Ukraine's favour.

'Russia will never allow Ukraine to join the NATO alliance period.' That was already settled. Biden said at the 2023 Vilnius NATO summit that Ukraine cannot join NATO. Trump has re-affirmed this. Still Russia cannot stop as other objectives are not reached - de-militarisation and de-Nazification.

The US will negotiate with Russia without Ukraine. Ukraine has to obey orders from the US. It obeyed US to wage a proxy war against Russia. When the US says 'negotiate, give up land', it will agree.

'Putin will bluff and bluff for ever.' What was Putin's bluff ? He said if Ukraine seeks NATO entrance and US tries to put bases there, Ukraine's independence will be cancelled. You thought he was bluffing. Putin did as he said he will do. Moreover, he has defeated the west and shown they were bluffing when the west said they will support Ukraine for however long it takes to defeat Russia.

Russia is not going to accept proposals like freezing the conflict so that Ukraine can rearm and join NATO in 10 years. Russia went to war to stop US bases in Ukraine. And Merkel said Minsk 2 was to buy time to arm the Ukraine; so there will be no ceasefire and Minsk type agreement. Putin had said in the Tucker interview that 'Russia is not going to negotiate just because you ran out of weapons'. The US and UK had told Ukraine to stop the peace settlement negotiated in Istanbul in 2021. Now why does the US want negotiations ? At that time, Putin had remarked that next time, the negotiations will be on Russian terms, and they will be stiffer. Which is the situation now. Russia is not going to listen to Trump or anyone else. Trump can escalate if he wants. What does he have to escalate with ? He does not have enough Patriots and in any case they could not stop the hypersonics which destroyed Ukraine's power grid. Ukraine does not have the manpower, its army has been killed off. Trump was elected to solve domestic problems and not to get bogged down in Ukraine. If he gives more arms to Ukraine, Russia can and will escalate - Ukraine will eventually get struck with Oreshniks. With the Oreshniks, Russia has escalatory dominance. Negotiations are non-starters. Russia must carry on. Ukraine is set to lose more in 2025. Once the last defensive structures in Donbass are overcome, there is nothing to stop Russia advancing to the Dnieper. Then the Russians can eye Odessa. And the process to clear out the Ukrainians from Kursk is underway. The war is lost for the west. Losers cannot dictate the terms. Any negotiations will be on Russian terms.

Ukraine chose to gang up with US to threaten Russia, now that it has lost, it has to give up territory. That is war settlement.

@andyhowells1141 Is that a best you could write ? A one word reply. You cannot refute what I said. Shameless fellow. The US goes and bullies small ones like Iraq and Afghanistan and Somalia. It thought it could take on Russia using Ukraine as a proxy and got defeated. Now the bully wants to retreat and asks Europe to take care of Ukraine.

The west hesitates and cannot walk its talk because it lacks one fundamental quality - it lacks the courage of the Russian soldier who will fight and lay out down his life to defend his country. The Ukrainians have the fighting courage also, they are Little Russians. But the Americans and the Europeans do not have the fighting ability. That is the cause for the hesitation.

Ledwidge has correctly said the negotiations will be between the US and Russia. Ukraine will not be a party to it. Trump negotiated with Taliban in Doha for a US withdrawal. The Afghan govt. that the US had installed was not invited; nor other NATO countries fighting in Afghanistan on US orders ! It will be the same with Ukraine. You claim 'Ukraine has all the manpower it needs...'. The Ukrainian forces themselves admit the recruitment crunch and the problem of desertion. Come out of wishful thinking and accept reality - the west has lost the war. It should have negotiated when Putin asked on Dec. 2021, and averted the war. But it didn't out of false pride, and now that the west has lost, it has to negotiate under Russia's terms. Get it ?

Russia sees it the same way - giving US and NATO concessions only led to NATO expansion and threats to Russia. Russia has decided to check NATO. It has defeated NATO. Get it ? You are free to fight till you are extinct.
