Each carried a police issue revolver, and they BORROWED a shotgun and a Spencer repeating rifle, that they did not know how to use. 3. They did not need to carry warrants with them. That is still the position today. If a warrant exists police can arrest without a warrant in possession. 4. They were carrying two sets of handcuffs to secure their prisoners. THEY are the facts. So if you disagree with these provable facts, let's see some evidence for your fictitious nonsense.

The Benalla Ensign editorial stated: "The Kelly family are notorious in this district and their names are as familiar as household words. The home of the family has been the rendezvous of thieves and criminals for years, and indeed has been the centre of crime that almost surpasses belief. They lived on the Eleven Mile Creek between Winton and Greta and made a living by horse stealing and theft. They were surrounded by neighbours of the same bad reputation and it was notorious that to obtain evidence or arrest the accused owing to the network of confederates for miles around was almost impossible." They certainly were considered a scourge Toby. You should also recognise that in the entire NE Victoria there were only 50 mounted police and 30 foot Constables. Very thin on the ground indeed, which allowed criminal elements like the Kelly's almost a free hand.

As previously advised, most police in small towns were well respected as they kept the townsfolk safe from the Kelly scourge. To suggest that someone who murdered a police officer could be a hero is simply delusional.

Don't you think it would be proper for police to act against such a felonious character as Ned Kelly? Squatter class, really? You are obviously unaware that there were no squatters left in the Greta area when Ned Kelly was stealing horses. In fact he was mostly stealing them from his poor settler neighbours, effectively sending them bankrupt and then threatening them with further damage if they dared to report the theft to police. He was a stand over thug as the evidence shows.

It is true that the black trackers did not get their fair share, but it was allocated to them. The Royal Commission found that the police acted properly towards the Kelly's. The Irish were not badly treated in Victoria at all. Two of the first premiers in Victoria were Irish, 82% of the police were Irish. There were no squatters in the Greta region at the time of the Kelly outbreak. Your comments are fictional nonsense.

  36.  @ianb4801  I should take you to task on your statement that Ned Kelly was not permitted to speak on his behalf. He could not give evidence on oath, but he could make an unsworn statement. That was the law at the time. His barrister refused to let him speak, probably as he knew he would lie and be found out and discredited. If you have ever read a transcript of the trial you will see that Bindon asked some very serious questions, especially of Constable McIntyre and the officer was steadfast in his evidence and did not waver at all. Overall Bidon did a pretty good job, although the Kelly fans will say he was incompetent. The police were paid reward money for bringing criminals to justice. Arresting them and putting them before the courts and upon conviction some of the reward money would be paid to police.

Peter Fitzsimon's book on Ned Kelly is poorly researched and just carries on the myths that proliferate regarding this vicious criminal. British includes Irish does it not? I think you mean English, however you are very wrong with that comment. Try reading Dr. Doug Morrissey's book Squatters, settlers and Stock Thieves. After reading that, you might want to withdraw the fiction you have written here.

It was the government that requested the police to arrest the supporters. It is acknowledged that no proof was presented to courts, and they were all eventually released.

Under oath, during Ned Kelly's trial in Melbourne, Senior Constable Kelly described a conversation he had with Ned Kelly immediately after he had been captured at Glenrowan: "Between 3 and 6 the same morning had another conversation with prisoner in the presence of Constable Ryan. Gave him some milk-and-water. Asked him if Fitzpatrick's statement was correct." Prisoner said, "Yes, I shot him." The police did NOT go into the bush to kill the Kelly's. You are repeating fictional nonsense. In fact, they carried 2 sets of handcuffs to secure their prisoners.
