  3. Carlin gets far more kudos than he should as he obviously doesn't understand what "average" means. It's not a single IQ point that encompasses half of a population. It's a range of intelligence that straddles the mean score, encompassing roughly 68% of the total population. Around 16% falls below (hence below average) and 16% above that band (hence above average), and he seems not to have considered the bottom 16%. What he's trying to champion is the top 16% that he wants to be considered a part of, and denigrates everybody with an IQ of 115 or less. Well, I've got news for him - it demonstrates that he's well below whatever mark he claims for himself if he really stands by that inane quote.

  17. The people driving the FE bus very cleverly tap into the large well of suspicion that there are various conspiracies afoot, and that act to keep the poor and disenfranchised in their place. The locus of these conspiracies is, variously, "the government", scientists, teachers, "the illuminati", and more. Having captured their audience they then deliver the hard sell. The FE vids that abound are quite attractive to those whose intellectual grasp of science and math is minuscule, and who passionately believe in these supposed conspiracies. They offer apparently plausible criticisms of the globe Earth, and argue that neither science nor math is necessary in order to "explain" natural phenomena. That they offer nothing to show that the Earth is, in fact, flat, seems not to be a problem for these poor succulents, many of whom gladly donate their hard earned in order to feel that they belong to the movement. They are provided with a raft of mantra to be used either as "explanations" or as a mindless defense against attempted education. Poor sods.

The more intelligent among us were able to work it out for ourselves, with a little extra reading.   50. You might like an article called "Being sane in insane places.", published in 1973 by David Rosenhan, a psych professor at Stanford. He sent a number of his grad students to go to a number of mental institutions claiming to be hearing particular sounds. If they were taken in they were instructed to immediately identify themselves, to resume behaving normally and demand to be released. After some weeks he was obliged to go rescue some of them as they were not believed. Interestingly, the crazies already there knew the students were sane, but the professional psychiatrists did not. Go figure. Moral: don't play crazy.
