  1. The shack has turned out awesome Lewis! You have certainly managed to fit plenty in there and make it functional. I need to use your storage system idea for all of the accessory bits and pieces, which seem to end up misplaced somewhere when you need something. And to have built your shack to a budget of 1500 quid is really great. I was expecting it to have cost much more to be honest. Enjoy the new shack and good luck with your new job! 73's!

  2. Really enjoying the scenery around your area Lewis! Very relaxing! Got a bit of a surprise seeing a train go over what I thought was an aqueduct over the canal! And yes, with so much bandwidth at 70cm, amazing that a QSO sprang up on the one frequency you were calling on. They must not have been able to hear you.

  4. I read recently that Voice Of Cuba has had major issues with their transmitters and antenna sites due to lack of maintenance and spare parts. The stations signal has really deteriorated of late. Could this be the reason that HM01 is now QRT? Will it return!? It has often boomed into Australia on 9065 and 14375kHz up until late last year.

  5. Super interesting Lewis! Thanks for telling the Rabbit story. Have you taken a Rabbit phone out and about to see of you can get a dial tone anywhere? ;) It reminds me of a resourceful friend who once connected a CB base station antenna to his cordless telephone base unit in order to extend the range of it. All so he could visit a friend down the road and not miss calls.

  6. Stunning video Lewis! I reckon there are 7 transmitter sites featured. Being out in the cold was well worth the effort. One thing you might try in your next installment with these antennas is how they perform bent in half as they are often shown. Does the transmit signal go all to crap as the VSWR shoots up or is there little difference? Hmmmm....

  9.  @gorak9000  We had Type II Smartnet analog up until the early 2000's. Then it was replaced by TETRA digital. Now that has been largely switched off except for a few small private networks. Much of the 800Mhz spectrum is being absorbed by LTE. There has not been any P25 @ 800Mhz in this country as far as I am aware. Plenty of P25 trunking in VHF and UHF though.

  15. Great job Lewis! The Simoco SRM series are pretty much bullet proof. If I can make a couple of suggestions: 1) Go to an automotive or electrical supplier and get some split loom or spiral wrap. Bunch all of your wiring neatly inside and it keeps it all nicely hidden and protects the DC cables from abrasions and shorts, especially in the boot/cargo area. Definitely tidy up the slack around your drivers footwell and gear shift etc.. 2) The magnetic mounts are going to ruin your nice white paintwork. Looks like the one already has started etching rust into the paint. Some lip mounts that fit on the rear hatch would be better, although they will need periodic removal to clean underneath. They will perform better than mag mounts and allow larger antennas to be used. I really like the yellow control head, but it would be too obvious to the Police when operating while driving. Although it is legal to use a two way radio when driving here, a road side argument about the law with the Police is futile. I use a hands free microphone with a foot switch in the car now. 73's!!!!

  19. Fantastic series Lewis! We never got these sorts of services in Australia. There was a 500Mhz FM mobile network (car mounted phones only) in the capital cities, then we went straight to AMPS at 800Mhz around the same time period in the mid-late eighties. Were any of these UK cordless systems open to eavesdropping?

  21. Been looking forward to the shed shack antenna installation! Nice job Lewis! And it appears you have plenty of airband action overhead going by the time lapse shots of the sky. See if you can source some LMR400 cable for your feeders. Have had great success with it and it is an improvement over RG-213. Great idea with the PO Box! Now you can do mailbag vlogs! And please let us know how 50Mhz works for you if you get a chance to operate some FM on 6m.

  22. Another super interesting video Lewis! The only good to come from this sort of behaviour is that it keeps the idiots busy with jamming repeaters while leaving the rest of the band free to enjoy. Gives extra encouragement to improve your antennas for better simplex range or use repeaters that these flogs aren't actively targeting or can access easily.

  25. Another good video! Thanks Lewis! But the RD-5R is not for me. Too toy like in appearance and the screen is way too small to read when contact list callsigns come up on receive. Much prefer the HD-1 or MD-380 style screen.
