  1. This one usually has a big signal into VK and recently it was found hiding around 7.2Mhz blasting away of an evening. I have tried to listen to it for any anomalies/changes, but it gets very irritating rather quickly. Must be received and recorded at the other end as the numbers just keep coming thick and fast which would have to be almost impossible to decode just by ear.

  13. Thanks for the walk through Lewis! I was really looking forward to getting an IC-705 but the pricing in VK is more expensive than the IC-7300. Maybe further down the log it will be more tempting to part with the money.

Perhaps really bad signal or the boss told him to get back to work, so he tries to stick it to the man! But yes, the golden age of radio listening and eventually scanning!

  19. Happy New Year Lewis! New Years Resolution- not to buy any more radios. But Lewis just uploaded another review. That didn't last very long now did it! Fine business with the shorter review, since most of the Chinese gear uses very similar programming software and programming needs to be a video on it's own. This video was good with the rundown on features and the range test, especially nicely interspersed with still shots of radio towers! More please Lewis!

  23. Ahhh yes! Remembering the days of having some surplus lowband VHF Motorola MAXTRAC's with a nice hot front end tuned to the 30Mhz end of the spectrum. Plug in a 10m band vertical mounted nice and high up and you could DX all sorts of neighborhood happenings. Simply set the radio to scan and wait to see what you could pick up! Although nothing could be more annoying than listening to a good call when another closer call would capture the receiver and block out the good stuff with a more mundane call!

  24. I have an ex Sydney 2000 Olympics Motorola XTS3000 in the collection. Still going strong. And down here in Melbourne the 420-430Mhz band is home to the Metropolitan Mobile Radio network which is a huge P25 trunking system, covering Melbourne and Greater Geelong. Police, Ambulance (both encrypted) and Fire services are the primary users along with SES. So a no go zone here also for Amateur operators.

  26. There is no point trying to explain reality to the sort of people who produce these leaflets. They will just dismiss you as "one of them" who are under the control of [insert controlling entity here] and you are saying what they want you to say. Some of the conspiracy theories they believe are just so insane that it makes for real comedy! You are BY ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE more at risk by UV exposure from the sun (especially here in the southern hemisphere) than you ever will be from a radio network. All these leaflets prove is that there are people out there with too much time on their hands and a distinct deficit of the appropriate medication.

Perhaps you could make a nice timber tilt over mast for that X-50 you need to store and add it to the side. Put it to some use with it out of the way, maybe even add a long wire or dipole that can be fed to your loft shack. 73's!

  28. Build one for 2m, put a tee piece at the top of the pole, mount both antennas a metre apart on a cross piece and feed them thorough a 2m/70cm duplexer so you can go both bands at once with separate radios! Easy to break down and put in the car or temporary install out in the field.

  31. Around here there are several mobile phone sites atop churches which were traditionally built on high ground. The crucifix on top is actually the antenna! Or the telco's have integrated the panel antenna into the spire, complete with plastic film printed with the brickwork to hide the panel antennnae. And why is it that those fake trees don't look anything like other trees native to the area? They look worse with the fake crappy "branches".

  37. Fantastic work Lewis! You mentioned below in the comments that you will remove the mail slot in the door? I say keep it. It is perfect for pizza delivery and meal trays, and of course radio related parcel delivery ;) You never know when an extended stay could be required! BTW, what is the ceiling height inside?

  44. Just purchased a GD-77 two weeks back to compare to the Ailunce HD-1. Still messing with the programming of both radios, and really like the HD-1. I have found the GD-77 to be pretty good for the price. The programming software with the help screen is good too, as your excellent video shows!   46. Really nice job James! Just completed my own version, using a .30 cal version of the ammo can (same can just narrower than yours which appears to be a .50 cal?). Using a LiFePo 15A battery with internal battery management and testing so far has given good performance running multiple receivers. Can also drop in SLA's if required. Also used a cutting board to make a nice top panel. Nice and light with the LiFePo battery inside. 73's for now!

  49. Another great review Lewis! The radio looks very good and has a great feature set. However.....way too expensive. Could get two used Motorola DM series mobiles for the same money. No remote head option which means installation in a modern car is difficult. Should be standard for a radio in this price range. And since my HD-1 has developed a fault whereby it will not power on when stored for a period with battery attached. Remove and reseat the battery and it comes to life. Thought the battery was dead initially. And they don't seem to be releasing firmware updates for the HD-1 anymore. Not too trusting of Retevis products now. It would be better if Retevis improved current products instead of continually releasing new models every few months.
