The type of vehicles popular in the US is vastly different than those in Europe, Japan, or CN. The best selling in the US vehicles are large work trucks, such as Ford F-150, GM Silverado, Dodge Ram, or SUVs whereas in Japan and CN small/compact (and also much cheaper vehicles). The current existing battery techs are ok for small vehicles, but difficult for larger SUVs/trucks (more power, weight, etc). China's LFP batteries for instance are really better optimized for stationary energy storage (ESS) or small vehicles. The small vehicle segment is less than 10% of the US auto market and still shrinking.

Huawei is a fabless IC designer and they really don't have really much know-how in improving manufacturing yield which is a completely different art in itself -- SMIC's co-CEO is a former TSMC head of R&D, and there are quite a few TSMC engineers at SMIC. For what it's worth, we know nothing about SMIC's efficienty, cost, or the current yield rate -- the Mate 60 Pro's AP's two generations behind equivalent Qualcomm SD. Combining these factor, it's not far fetch to even speculate that it's made on a much inferior 7/8/10 nm nodes.

I'd admit that there are certain domains where Chinese engineers dominate -- for instance, I used to work at a quant shop in NYC where 80+% of quants were washed-up Chinese PhDs from top US universities who couldn't land an academic job. There are also certain parts of tech industry dominated by Indians, women, etc, etc.

  32. this is baffling me a bit, Micron has no competition in China. There is no Chinese memory chip maker with capacity nearly enough to match Micron, Samsung, or SK Hynix. China accounts for less than 5% of all memory chps produced globally.

China imports 3/4 of all chips for assembly/packaging, but they are exported out -- ie, they are not consumed domestically. China's most advanced lithos are made by SMEE and their most cutting edge nodes are 28+nm, which was announced earlier this year. None of their existing manufacturing equipments are made domestically -- they are all imported -- as are the folks running SMIC's 7nm, who are ex-TSMC expats.

  39. BYD has been making hybrid for a while and this is just an incremental improvement that is hyped. This is like weekly Chinese battery breakthroughs we hear every weeks now. Of course, most of those are just vaporware/hype and we won't see them anytime soon.

Not all subsidies are same, you just gotta understand what is prohibited under the WTO's SCM (subsidies and countervailing measures) agreement; see Annex 1 ILLUSTRATIVE LIST OF EXPORT SUBSIDIES: a. The provision by governments of direct subsidies to a firm or an industry contingent upon export performance. c. Internal transport and freight charges on export shipments, provided or mandated by governments, on terms more favourable than for domestic shipments. etc. etc,
