It would be interesting to get a psychologist to discuss how people will buy into certain ideas or products and then irrationally defend their choices and get angry at people who make different choices or point out the flaw in their choices. You see this in the high-end audio quite a bit, but we're also seeing it in other areas that may be of interest to this channel. ....which reminds me of a limerick... There once was a man from Nantucket, who had loads of cash in a bucket, he bought a bad truck, got stuck in the muck, And now he says oh, just.........?????????

  3. The reason this is happening is EV owners are asking a basic question: What can an EV do that my gas powered car cannot do? And why must I charge it every night? Why must I have a 2nd car if I'm traveling a long distance (which is common in the US)? And why am I paying more for a car that ultimately has less utility and higher insurance costs than a gas powered car?

  4. I want to thank the owners of EV for resetting the weather... sorry, climate.... back to the way it was 70 years ago. Yes, it got very cold in the winter, and yes, we had lots of snow. This winter is normal weather for North America. You've made a difference with your purchase and I can only encourage you to buy more EVs.

I tried to explain to the crazies why the energy density of sunlight would take 2-3 weeks to charge even a small EV battery, and their response was "Elon has great engineers, they'll figure it out". Maybe wind-powered cars? Put a sail on them, and let the wind push you around. You'd have to tack against the wind, which will make city traffic more interesting.

  15. @MGuy here's an interesting tidbit about green energy: Wind & solar struggle to make up the difference [of energy lost by decommissioning older power plants]. They run only 24-40% of the time, producing much less than “nameplate” capacity figures would suggest. Adding batteries brings extra strain: battery storage is 141 times more expensive than liquefied natural gas, and every 1KWh of battery storage requires 50KWh of energy to create it So next time someone tells you the wind and solar will power EVs are either unaware of the real figures or they're lying.

  16. On the C&D website, well-off people are defending $100K EVs because "all new technology is expensive". When you point out that you can buy a non-EV for far less than that, there's a lot of derision and excuses like "this is faster than a sports car". It's detached from reality.

I'm probably the only person who thought the VW Diesel cheating "scandal" was actually very clever and I applauded VW for doing it since the difference was so tiny between what their diesels emitted and the regulation. Meeting the standard was significantly more expensive and ironically made them burn more diesel fuel. Regulators are not the brightest people. It reminds me of the original "Air Pumps" the industry used in the 1970's & 1980's. It would pump air through the exhaust to dilute the exhaust gases to prove that they were meeting tailpipe emissions.

It will give bureaucrats a lever to give favors to the groups they decide will help them politically, and punish the people and industries they don't agree with. It reminds of the income tax in the US. When the amendment was passed, it was only supposed to affect the top 1% of people. How did that work out? Or Social Security, which they promised would only be "A nickel in each paycheck". The road to hell is paved with good intentions, but when politicians are involved, the "good intentions" aren't there to begin with.

Let's talk facts here instead of new-age nonsense: 1) make the grid stronger No one in the world is doing this, because the costs are too high 2) creating jobs and opportunities 10 years ago, Spain moved to a "green economy" and it completely tanked their economy with high unemployment 3) transition to clean energy there's no such thing The creation of EVs actually is far worse for the environment than the full lifecycle cost of a gas/diesel car. In addition the full lifecycle of windmills and solar cells is worse for the environment because there is no way to recycle them, so they end up as waste and buried where the chemicals leach into groundwater. Steve, come back to earth. The air and climate are just fine.

Ultimately, even if EVs improved significantly, they'd be at most 7% of the entire fleet of cars in the US. And frankly, EV progress has leveled off over the past 3-4 years, so it will probably level out at 4-5%

  42.  @redbaron6805  Well, those were optimistic projections from 3 years ago, but as predicted, EV sales have leveled off and will never achieve more than 5-6% of the total population of cars, and those are primarily used as 2nd cars for people with garages.

But things are only recycled if recycling is cheaper than mining new minerals. Aluminum and steel fall into that category, but lithium and sodium require special handling (i.e. expensive) that makes them uneconomical to recover. Cobolt falls into that same category with new cost-effective methods for recycling still in the lab, which means we're probably 15-20 years from production use.

  50.  @scottcarr3264  Until it's in production, it's simply vaporware. Recall that solid state batteries were supposed to be the new breakthrough. Never happened, it just didn't work out. There's a huge gulf between the laboratory and production.
