  3. This is a pretty good video with some details missing or let out. For starters it was the German empire during ww1 that revived the Polish and central European states from Russian rule. Secondly the term "from Lisabon to Vlodivostok" is not a core part of European or even French policy making but rather a phrase of optimism and potential of closer economic ties with Russia, this was said before the 2022 invasion, during that time Russia was becoming more economically tied with the west and was showing signs of modernisation, all of that progress has now pretty much been swept away, thus making the phrase useless. Third France has been most vocal of trying to tie both German and French national security and economic interests together, anyone who has studied European history knows that Europe destroyed itself because of wars and national interest conflicting with eachother, the primary goal of the EU and Franco-German alliance has been to centralize power and policy to act in a collective interest for Europe as a whole with mixed results, the question is will Europe fall apart again into minor spheres of influence? Or can they solidify into something stronger? While many say it can't there are some signs of cooporation and development on this front, sadly these processes take time and effort in a world that's suddenly changing very quickly and with big players who already cleared this phrase on easy mode, mostly the US, China, India and Russia to a less degree. There has to come a change in Europe, the question is from who and how, the USA can't be fully trusted, their loyalty only lies in how it benefits their national interest which is balanced by needing both a strong Europe but divided enough to not act against it's interests, despite their big military support for central Europe, it's in economic ties where long term interest of these nations lie, after Russian defeat the defence spending will drop and US interest will shift to other fronts, leaving only Germany and France to fill the void.

  6.  @sblbb929  by that logic you would think the USA as a nation can't exist or Brazil, or India or even China, differences don't matter that much anymore, in the past levels of technology and the people themselves tore apart the established orders because they did not feel represented, most of these nations weren't democratic, they weren't liberal or even understanding of national interests. a Federation of European nation states does not mean an erasing of cultures, languages or people, it means a defending of these things on a pan European scale, people in germany are effected by migration through greece, Poland is threatened by Russia which effects the baltics, Finland might be next if Ukraine or Hungary gets puppeted, the USA might abandon Europe at some point, what then? what if France wants to take over all of Europe? who could stop them then? Germany? all these issues can be solved through a federation of European nations, so that each national interest becomes the pan-national interest of this new federation, this is how the USA became a superpower, they were first seen as ''these united states'' and over time (and a civil war) they became ''the united states'' it is not inevitable but thinking it can't work just means you have not tried hard enough.

The British empire collapsed because of Winston Churchill and the leaders of the UK, just like how the EU is dying because of the policies and actions of it's leaders, same with the USA and the policies and actions of it's leaders. The rise of China is based on the policies of it's leaders, they made major reforms and thus benefited from them into the future. Likewise Russia will benefit or suffer from the policies and actions of Putin and thus history marches on, forever.

I don''t think language and culture is that much of an issue anymore, we've all largely been americanized anyways so the idea that culture or language would be a major issue today is just not realistic anymore, much more so would be the military and economic issues which are vast and which still harbors a great deal of distrust and resentment, if there is to be a European federation there must be no fear or concern that an army beneath a European Union banner is going to attack, harm or threaten smaller member states unless absolutely nessisary and in agreement by all states and governments (of NATO) in and outside of the EU. some people think the goal is to be like the United states but this is not realistic, the EU can't be like the USA it can only act in it's own collective self interest, something the USA also does but less hard power and more soft power projection, less wars of aggresion and more wars of defense is most likely going to be the manner of being.

Germany's army has been limited since ww2 and they aren't that interested in changing the current set up for them as a nation, France largely fills that hole right now and Poland is also becoming more active in a militaristic manner, meanwhile you have the EU military projects going to try and create a more pan European, standardized army and military equipment so it's not like they aren't doing anything. NATO costs Germany a lot of money and benefits mostly the USA, the USA in fact has little interest in a European army or federation, they enjoy the status quo very much, sure Germany could do more for NATO but that's not their drive or focus, they want to focus on European interest wide and focus on economics while others focus on military subjects, it's not a bad deal but it does limit german influence to only/mostly soft power projection and influence.

  13. of course it is, Taiwan is an example of what China could have been and the CCP hates it, it also hates it because they are the remnants of the nationalist forces of China, controles an important trade link and because the CCP failed like 3 times to invade the nation. Taiwan today is a democracy, whatever their dictatorship was before is long gone and the same is true for places like South Korea so what's the issue?

  17.  @elRandomTk  im not german, I'm Dutch but I feel like Germany could do much more and be less harmfull for itself and others if it took it's roll as Europe's biggest economy more serieusly and understood the reality of needing a stronger military to compete in the world as well as be less hard on itself for the past, since that harms it's ability to act in the present and therefor the future.

I partly agree and disagree, I don't think it's going to be a positive sign if it's just Germany and France, other nations should also get the chance to join into this idea and many but not all will do so, there is a policy method called ''multispeed European intergration"' which is each member state chooses it's own method of intergration and gets placed in a rank of sorts on how far they are intergrated, most of western Europe and parts of Northern Europe are already largely intergrated, same rule of law, mostly same culture, close relations with member states but others like parts of Eastern Europe and Southern Europe might be more reserved due to history or specific national interests that clash with European interests which might mean they want less full intergration. while that might not be optimal it would give a gradual transformation of the EU and can actually do something for the member states that would benefit them and thus promote further intergration into a wider European Federation, it's probably the best move forward and can iron out the issues faster for each new state that wishes to join.

  23. @R well the alternative is leaving the block or being seen as less important for EU wide policies since they aren't willing to put in the effort, you can say it's unfair and perhaps it is but likewise us being blocked by smaller member states is also unfair so at some point it has to move forward and you can join or not join but effects will happen and they can be positive or negative. Mercenary approach is a bit unfair, they aren't trying to become a federation for economic reasons just to make money, it's a national security issue for all member states and long term growth for a world that's hyper competitive, stagnation means death and Europe has stagnated for quite some time, if it does not bend, it will break that's the way I see it.

  24. Nations can't join NATO if they have land disputes with other nations, though if the USA had talked with Ukraine to abandon cremea in exchange for NATO membership that would have been a good trade, not sure if that would have been possible however.

Because typically you don't help your enemies fight their enemies or see the nation that help put you on the map as your enemy and start idk ethnic cleansing their diaspora population as a good idea?   27. Can we say for certain that we can consider this an act of genocide and not just warcrimes and ethnic cleansing? I feel like we are getting less and less in realistic, cold hard facts and more and more into emotional, hyperbolic thinking. This in no way is a support or excuse for what Russia is doing or trying to deny the facts but trying to come to real conclusions and how best to react to it, nobody wants a new worldwar and it's important to measure what is and is not a step too far to justify calling for such moves and how such a response would best be done if at all. Ethnic cleansing and warcrimes is bad, nuclear war is much, much worse.

  29. and lose everything without a fight? that would have been very stupid, Taiwan played it's cards right but it's at the mercy of other nations, it has defended itself against China multiple times before the USA got involved, yet at the same time the USA attempting to open up the country of China is what lead to the current situation. even worse if they declared independence (which the majority of the people of Taiwan want) then that would be a trigger for China to invade them even sooner and less of reason for the USA to stick around since they want Taiwan as an example of a different model for China.

  30. only if the British or Americans attempt to block it or Russia, so far it's always been outside forces fearing the result and killing it rather than themselves winning it and then losing it on their own, the British are weak, the Americans are focused on China, the only real threat remains Russia which ironically fuels it's creation even more so.

  31.  @tonyhawk94  the thing is many of them have actually worked, just that they got destroyed by outside forces or they failed to evolve beyond the point they were created. The nation of Germany for example was created by first loose confederation and then federalization, the whole ww1 and ww2 conflicts were about it working so well and expanded the reach of the nation that other powers feared it, same with France, same with the Hastatic league. The reason why the USA became a federation ironically is because they had few enemies around them and because France helped them to secure their independence, thus they could expand and expand without much fear of anyone trying to wage a massive war to try and stop them which thus far has been the case for most of Europe. There is also the issue that before, Europe was already expanding all around the world, the need for federalisme did not exist because they were the rulers of the world and thus federalization was not nessisary, untill Germany came to be and changed the dynamics of geo-politics. Make no mistake if the EU becomes a federation it will most likely have massive effects on geo-politics, will that outcome be good or bad? Who knows? However doing nothing or reverting back to 20th century nation states in the 21th century is bound to cause stagnation, decline and frankly humiliation for all of Europe, not just the EU.

I do support a federal EU but for the exact purpose of reversing the current trends in and around Europe, small nations can't deal with the current waves of crisis we face and divided we can't do much against it, united however we do stand a chance and I am well aware of some of the incompetent leadership in Europe but they can be removed and replaced, the framework in which they are based however takes years if not decades to build.

I think the only way for the EU to become a federation and to justify it, is if the leaders of these nations can convince the people that doing so will bring them more security, freedom, wealth, prestige and a greater sense of identity. however, both the leaders and people don't seem that keen on being more free, they don't always act in ways that bring about more wealth, the identities are somewhat fragmented and they fear eachother sometimes more than greater threats that loom beyond their borders, as for prestige, most people don't find this motivating at all but the elites most certainly see the value and abilities possible in doing so. Europe is at a crossroads, is it going to try and embrace the future, shape it's own destiny and work for it's own self interest or is it going to collapse, stagnate and decline into nothing while being the play things of other powers more concerned with their great game instead of paying attention to European civilization, only time will tell but I do think and hope we can create a federal Europe that can lead us to a better future.

  35. there is an argument to be made for a federal EU to help regulate nuclear weapons and share French existing nuclear weapons and nuclear warning system (France can use a nuclear weapon as a ''warning'') getting nuclear weapons is expensive and makes one a target of potential attack, sharing nuclear weapons is a sign of trust, mutual beneficial relationship and lowers nuclear proliferation.

  37.  @Pincer88  that's a bit untrue to a degree, yes the current organisation how they are today would not exist without NATO but that's not to say organisations like them would not exist, in fact the EU is not much different from Germany's goals in ww1 which was to create a network of nations and create a international body for economic and political matters, it was to be called ''MittelEuropa'' in which Germany would be the main economic and military engine of Europe and then grow, compete and unify the rest of Europe under it's sphere (kind of like the EU is today) in many ways that's even what the nazi's wanted just with a lot more slavery, genocide and settler based colonialism. the current world order is because of the cold war and the policies set by the USA and the USSR, this destroyed the old order of European nations and thus we were forced to change and adapt to this new reality, now we've all benefited a lot from this new order and it's mostly thanks to the USA but also the invention of nuclear weapons, this made wars much more impossible and working together much more nessisary and profitable but we should not forget how strange this new reality actually is from most of human history and also don't forget it can't last forever, before ww1 no major industrial nation was at war with eachother for over 98 years I believe and then ww1 and ww2 happened, the current long peace can't last forever and when it happens new political systems and governments will be nessisary, it is inevitable.

  38. what's going to happen is nation that have friends with nukes will want to have that nations protection and nations that are more rogue or have no friends to help them out will seek their own nuclear weapons. in the case of Europe, France and the UK already have nuclear weapons, Poland and Germany could easily get them as well, however would it not make sense for a shared EU level nuclear defence program to prevent other nations from seeking these expensive and potentially harmful weapons. as for the third world nations, the idea that they could get nuclear weapons is more terrifying since if these states collapse or become authoritarian they will then suddenly gain a potential nuclear weapons system, whatever order exists in the future, that can not be allowed without blowback, it needs to become a pariah state like north korea if it does something like that and a much more aggresive and pro-active stance must be taken against it, something everyone needs to agree on.

Japan and EU can fund very strong armies but what would be the use for them? you can't exactly expand, you need massive legal change which not everyone wants and it would basically only be a benefit to the USA to cut costs for it's military spending, so what's the point? though I can guarantee you if say the EU became a full federation then that economic power would most certainly be invested more in military spending since the area of defence and need for legitimacy would be much higher than current individual nations.

  48.  @hashtagunderscore3173  uhhhh what experience? and in case you have not noticed during that period China grew so much while the USA was wasting billions. war is expensive and it has zero economic benefit, your also not fighting an industrial nation so there is little insights into how best to wage such a war so there is almost no benefit at all. China not having a lot of experience with naval doctrine is a big limit to them but they've also vastly expanded their fleet and attempted to learn from the USA as well as others. in a modern war or conflict between civilizations, economic, demografic and technology is much more important than experience, USA has lost a lot of influence, power and prestige because of their wars, there is a reason why Trump and also Biden don't want another war, sadly Ukraine vs Russia pretty much forces US hand, the war in Ukraine is probably more of a learning lesson and experience gained event than all the wars between 2001 and now ever will provide.

  49.  @robertkeaney9905  it's more so due to scale of industry, USA dominating after ww2 and kept that edge sharp by not being involved in many wars but maintaining their industrial base and by the luck of having their main rival be the communist USSR which while somewhat competent with its designs quickly fell out of favor and then collapsed. USA does not need to wage wars or have proxy conflicts to maintain that edge, in fact over the last few decades the USA has been doing exactly that thing that has made them lose that edge which is transfering a lot of industry to China, waging wars on their own dime with little benefit, while ignoring issues at home and lowering the values of a competent military leadership that reduces it's effect on their enemies, Victor David Hanson had a great article a few days ago on why the US military is slipping in it's recruitment numbers, the trust in it's military and those that lead it. The USA is still the worlds super power but time as of now, is not on their side, the USA needs to change gears if it wants to maintain that edge, I think they will change but that's not inevitable and in the meantime the enemies of the USA will continue to adapt and learn. The only good news has been the recent Russia Ukraine conflict, lots of weapon deals, F-35 deals, new interest in NATO alliance and two of their potential competition hindering eachothers economies and revealing weakness in the Russian army. When things get tough for the americans, god throws them a bone it seems, when things get tough for the Europeans, god adds another war to the list.

  50.  @tonyhawk94  EU has not stopped any wars directly they don't have the forces to do so, rather the EU helped create economic stability that could have justified wars or led to them, though this could be more due to NATO, it's not exactly clear cut.
