To be honest, Russia is quite toothless in it's ability to project soft power influence on western nations, it's gas reserves and involvement in the European energy sector is more usefull in projecting soft power than it's vast nuclear weapons or massive army. Russia basicaly is the last European nation state that wants to "go back" to the good old days when it was a superpower on the world stage and in doing so it's harming it's relations with the rest of the world, brings it more into the pockets of China and harming it's own economic prospects. NATO should keep expanding for sure but it would be best not to put anti missile shields or nuclear weapons closer to Russia, you want to keep them angry, not desperate, at some point the Russian people, the rich, the army and the political elites will realise that Russia can't move forward with it's current policies and will either become more democratic or more likely just less authoritarian in order to adapt to the rest of the world. The Russian bear is old and dying, keep it in the cage of it's own borders and move on from there.

  5.  @benmm01  that's very naive of you to think since Russia has already attacked, annexed and continues to wage war in eastern Ukraine, Russia already fired first, the question is how much more will they fire and at what point does NATO react? Either directly or indirectly.

You sound like someone who has no understanding of deterence theory or history, Russia has always been an invading force, the other half of the axis coin when it was the soviet union and the great terror for much before and after it came to be. Russia does have have PTSD, Russia has Borderline personality disorder and a major drinking problem, they can have all the nukes in the world, they won't do a thing, Russia is dying with it's current leadership they can't stop NATO expansion which is why they are pissed off, they can invade Ukraine if they like, it will cost them dearly, more nations will join NATO, it's always going to be a lose/lose deal for them in the long run. If Russia is to prosper it has to stop being so authoritarian, it has to embrace more liberal ideas, allow more investment from outside it's own borders, it has to become more friendly with it's enemies and then perhaps it can grow much stronger and much more respected on the world stage, Europe wants a strong Russia but only if a strong Russia keeps Europe free and independent, that's the issue. Nobody is threatening Russia, Russia is threatening everyone around it for centuries.

Don't be silly, Russia has invaded a number of nations even before the year 2000, the USA does start wars and many of them for shitty reasons but the USA does not start wars to expand it's land borders or because it feels like it can take whatever it wants. USA is like an incompetent, honest fool, while Russia is more like a cunning, cut throat maffia with nukes and oil, I prefer the honest fool over the cutthroat killer any day.

  9. That's fearmongering nonsense, no nuclear power is going to randomly nuke people, the elites of that nation would kill the leader on the spot for even saying it out loud. Expanding NATO is not going to lead to war, you know what it? Doing nothing and making hollow promises with no force behind it. The only other argument would be if anti missile shields or nukes were placed by NATO closer to Russia, you can push the troops close to the borders, what you can't do is take way deterence from having nuclear weapons, simply having troops closer is not going to start a nuclear war.
