  6.  @labanyu  I get your point. I also want corporate profits to stay in America... but does who own a company really influence where those profits are spent? I mean, do American companies spend their profits in America... or in Chinese factories anyway? On the plus side - If China is so heavily invested in American assets, they aren't likely to start a war or do anything to destabalize our country. Just a thought.

  11.  @shane_rm1025  Spot on - rich people don't consume as much per dollar they make as a "regular" person does. BUT they absolutely consume more than a "regular" person in total by an order of magnitude, there are just fewer rich people so you don't seem to notice. BUT - what they DO do with their "left over" money is park it in real estate, art, and other passive investments that keep it out of circulation. (It's mostly new money that goes into starting new businesses... not old money.) It's how the wealth gap keeps spiraling out of control. They SHOULD spend it or at least increase wages in the companies they own, but their wealth hoarding hurts everyone and, long term, will leave America with de facto lords and other wealth-based royalty exactly like Britain and France before their revolutions.

Trump will give tax breaks to the rich and corporations and could care less about paying for it. You pick your poison, I'll pick mine. Just fyi, the tax rebates we give to big oil for drilling new wells would cover twice the green investment we are making now.

  24. Trump removed all doubt - he will invade Greenland/Panama/Canada because he thinks that's what strong rulers do. ALL he cares about is power, might makes right, as he announced to the world that Ukraine's moral position is meaningless simply because they are too week to stand up to Putin. This was the last straw for any hope of rationality on Trump's part. It's ALL about power, period.

  31. The rolling blackouts are caused by delays in implementing green energy, not BY the green energy. CA is a unique case where mudslides and forest fires have already been increased dramatically by global warming and will only get worse. Blaming EVs is like blaming a vaccine for making you feel bad for a day and saying you'd prefer to just get the disease and die a slow and painful death.

I wouldn't personally say you're an "empty can" - I would just say you are biased and looking for reasons not to change from our current tragic climate trajectory because it might inconvenience you somehow. Your statements about climate corrections being done on the backs of the poor.. just projections. The real damage from oil and gas drilling and refining is already done in the backyards of the poorest, resulting in poisons and pollution in their water and air. A view of windmills is a lot more pleasant (to me, obviously) than a field of oil rigs or refineries. And of course there's not enough green capacity yet- what do you think we're fighting big oil for? How can anyone justify the $20 billion per year we subsidize big oil with compared to the few hundred million we spend on green?

Once Biden throw in the towel, there was literally no one else they could run after the primary was already done and Biden/Harris got all the delegates. BUT that doesn't explain the huge crowds, huge number of new voter registrations, and massive amount of excitement among the democrats. I didn't even know much about her except for her excellent senate grilling of witnesses but my mind has been blown by how effective she's been against Trump and in rallying her support. I haven't seen a single false step - she does things on her time-table and so far she's nailed it. She owned Trump in the debate, her speech to the economists was stellar, and her speech after the border visit could be the final nail in Trump's ridiculous political boondoggle.

  38. It's not "protect at all costs." If it were, we would never send soldiers overseas in the first place. The issue is, at what cost is it worth it? How many hundreds of soldiers should be sacrificed to evacuate a handful of Americans, most of whom chose to stay until the last minute for reasons of local family or other priorities, when there is a good chance of extracting them later? You can argue either way, but Biden has a lot more intel than I do so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt here.

  46. Ian did say that the political divide in the US is only getting worse, but he didn't say what the consequences would be. My take is that It will be hard to provide global security if the GOP achieves, with approval from their base, permanent power by rigging elections with a combination of gerrymandering, restricting voter access, and installing political hacks to oversee elections. Without any liberal voices left in politics, the US military will become even more of a tool used by American oligarchs to control global supply lines and markets like big oil has done in the middle east.

Clinton's BJ lies, the "no new taxes" pledge, but mostly that these actual failures of leadership were all on the GOP watch. Only a con man would equate Clinton's fling with causing the deaths of 10s of thousands of people or losing their homes, yet that both-sides-ism is all we get from "center" media because telling the truth might cost them viewers on one side or the other.

It's very hard to watch "the other side" because all they seem to do is demonize and bash "your" side, and who wants to hear that? All the news on the fringes is about how evil and corrupt "the other side" is.
