  3. In terms of movies the .44 magnum and most likely the Smith & Wesson model 29 actually in all likely hood made its film debut in 1967's Point Blank. Carried by Lee Marvin. Of course the best guns in the movies are Angie Dickinson's :)

  5. So a weapon built for the US Navy in the 60s has "intellectual property rights". The IPR should of been held by the Dept of the Navy if anyone. When I was working if I developed something at work for my employer they owned the rights.

  6. I've always wondered why if paper served so well for shotguns none of the early cartridge firearms did not use it until drawn brass was worked out.

  7. ​ @felixthecat265  I certainly remember the days of paper shotgun shells. The brass base acts as the gas seal at the breach. The actual wall of the chamber is what withstands the pressure of the expanding gases from the powder burning. Composite brass and paper shells would only have been a stopgap in any case. The rapid advance in the technology of drawing brass not just for firearms cartridges but avariety of other consumer uses at the time negated the necessity. Look at the recent rifle designs submitted for the US Army and Marines to replace the M-16 and M-4. Two used traditional drawn brass cartridges. One used a composite steel and plastic case. The plastic certainly would not with stand the pressues developed allby itself. Now a composite case that featured a small metallic base with a combustible case would be interesting. Less chance of stuck cases on extraction. One potential problem to solve would be possible chamber fouling by residue from the combustible case. I'm certainly no chemist although l can still do basic equations for simple chemical reactions.

  9. While l seriously doubt these people are doing anything related to actual firearms production turning metal with cutting fluid just brushed on the material will result in "smoke". Flood coolant is of course the better choice. The lathe shown might not even gave coolant. And "gun drilling" is a whole different ball game than drilling with a twist drill. No pun intended. Needs high pressure coolant to flush the chips out and the hole actually acts as the support to keep the gun drill steady.

  13. Coil feeder, progressive die, heat treat furnace to bring link up to Austenizing temperature (1) and quench. Then into the draw furnace to bring the hardness down to I'm guessing around 50RC or so. I wonder what the alloy is and the quench solution. 1) The temperature at which steel changes from a face centered cubic structure where the alloying element (carbon, chrome, molybdenum (2), vanadium whatever is centered in the faces of of a cube of iron atoms to a body centered structure where the alloying elements are in the center of the cubic structure. If the steel is quenched fast enough the alloying elements will stay inside the cubic structure. Drawing or tempering allows a certain percentage of the alloying elements to migrate back into a face centered grain structure. This gives the steel enough of its ductility back while still maintaining enough of the body centered material to provide toughness and resistance to impact and wear. Heat treating steels and any other metal is at once both a science and a black art depending on the scale it's being done at. A similiar manufacturing process is used to produce stamped rocker arms for engines. Although in that case the heat treatment is likely done in a seperate area. Plus the stamping presses are much larger.

  16. I suspect the reason the NYPD bought them is because Auto Ordinance wanted twice as much for a Thompson. The NYPD probably has their's sitting in storage some place in a police armory the storage boxes gathering dust. It would be interesting to see just what the price difference vs a Thompson was

  21.  @ForgottenWeapons  If you were producing nobody was handing you a rifle or anti tank weapon (can't recall the name). Same with the aircraft industry. All those wonderwaffe aircraft were very successful. At keeping the engineers out of uniform.

As trick as the Werder is that doesnt make sense to me. The only thing that would have made the action even slicker* is to have just one trigger that would drop the hammer at one stage and then open the breech and eject the shell when pulled farther back. *And the Werder is about as slick as a single action gets

  25. That depends on if the publisher sees a potential trial market for an audio version. There is software that will render text into speech but an actual narrator is far superior. Some of the best non fiction I have listened to was narrated by the author themselves. Any of Simon Winchester's audio books narrated by him are out standing. As are Rick Atkinson's works on WWII.

  28. Given that the small number of China Lakes built were basically custom built guns cost wise yes. Even a mass produced version would be expensive. How many rounds of 40mm did the grenadeir carry? How many were carried by the other men in the squad? How much would the weight of the pump action cut into the ammo load vs the M-79?

  41.  @socksleeve  With modern materials the weight could be reduced somewhat. Polymer receiver, magazine tube and stock. The parts that really need the strength are the bolt and chamber/barrel. But wasn't there also an issue with possible chambering of the high pressure rounds from the crew served weapon. The big problem is probably the weight of the ammunition when the tube is full. What I could not figure out is the whole intellectual property thing. The originals were produced by Marine armourers iirc. Hence any intellectual rights should have belonged to the government. The attempted re-incarnation was being done under contract with the DOD if I recall correctly.

  45.  @donjones4719  There was that actor who killed himself in the 1980s by firing a blank loaded pistol against his head. Also I've heard the term "rubber gun squad" used in relation to police officers that were put on administrative duty to keep them off of the streets. And CGI guns are entirely PC.

  46.  @donjones4719  There is one thing that any one who is not familiar with firearms in the entertainment industry who us working on a filmor TV production should be for ed to learn is just how dangerous a blank round can be. True there is no bullet involved but there is still an explosion. Plus film and TV production companies have long had prop men who where responsible for any firearms being used.
