15:46 Hexamine is the name for the heating brick. Also very happy that previous generations sorted these issues out as I frequently fire tank ammunition with a cellulose cartridge case that burns when we fire the gun, and sometimes (rarely) they rip and you get the turret floor covered in lots of little pellets.

Also lends its name to a dry biscuit here.

@William-Morey-Baker Two guys with Lewis guns - aren't the entire Australian Military - why does this crap persist (youtube / internet has a lot to answer for).
8
Kudos for making a trivial issue (or really only of interest to rivet counters) into an entertaining 30 minutes.

16:40 - 16:45 "The hypotenuse and the long side of the triangle" Pretty sure the hypotenuse is the long edge? ;)

39:40 Good attempt. "Lithgo" - in a similar way the Glasgow is pronounced "Glasgo". Looking forward to the coverage of I-24's bombardment of Sydney's Eastern suburbs on 8/9 June 42, which my mother in law experienced.
4
Long way from Oz. Someone else can have my ticket.
4
@Dave_Sisson Ah well if he's stuck in Melbourne he has my sympathies.
4
Gentlemen, Thank you very much for the session. I did watch to the end, although I'm not focused on Naval history, but as a "land guy" I'm a consumer of the effects provided by my colleagues in the senior service.

Interesting to read about spaced armour for warships. I presume a fully KE round (no bursting charge) like a tank's APFSDS would have limited effect given the volume of the target?
3
Ah so Tirpitz just needed a "Tallboy proof" bomb deck! Just stroll down to the shipyard and specify a 1.5m - 2m (or more) bomb deck and watch for the reaction. :) Happy New Year.
3
Why not upload from say Sydney - we have the Internet here too you know. ;)
3
Next time come to Canberra to the Australian War Memorial.
3
The Yanks have extended the apology, naming one of their new Littoral Combat Ships (LCS-30) "USS Canberra".
3
That's not Melbourne. That looks like Portsea.

May I start by saying how much I appreciate the effort you have obviously put in. I must say though that the miniature ships whilst possibly aesthetically pleasing in real life, lacked clarity. The addition of the ensigns in Part 2 helped, except for the ones seemingly randomly placed in the middle of the sea, but I couldn't read what was written on them, nor could I tell directions, etc. I suspect they look great up close but far away it was hard to determine which end was the bow (perhaps colour the base near the bow or place the ensign at the front of the column?). The maps / charts however were very clear and perhaps those are a better way forward?

Without becoming too Monty Pythonesque are the "Gallons" you referred to US or UK "Gallons"? Apart from having no idea as to the background to the difference, this would seem to suggest the use of Litres as the common unit of measure.

Yesterday Sydney, today Brisbane ... I think the issue is that post the Brisbane floods, the previously safe mooring was perhaps no longer safe due to wreckage on the river bed. Also if you watched the floods there was video of major items (ferry quays, etc.) breaking free and creating havoc downstream - I suspect they wanted to remove such potential hazards.

Terrible to hear of the war grave desecration
2
Surprised re the LOTR reference. Would have thought being a maritime channel, that the beacons relaying the message re the Armada would have come to mind. :)
2
Good to know where Kenneth More did his research for "A Night to Remember" and "Sink the Bismarck".
2
FYSA, most people here pronounce it as "Jarvis" - It bit like the variations on "Newcastle" (Newcasstle / Newcarstle)..
2
I guess Quint needed a bigger boat - twice?
2
I have walked the ground there twice (relatives at Quinn's Post and The Nek) and looked down on the Dardanelles from Chunuk Bair. I continue to be struck by Johnny Turk's heroism and determination: "I don't order you to fight, I order you to die. In the time it takes us to die, other troops and commanders can come and take our places." — Mustafa Kemal I'm also struck seeing how close the water appears that the Anglo French maritime assault could have saved so many lives, and avoided actions such as the SS River Clyde at Cape Helles (V Beach).

Kia ora! No need for Elephants, you already have the All Black tight five. :)
2
A relatively safe wreck to dive - assuming the RADHAZ has reduced. ;)
2
33:00 Hence the requirement for the Loyal Toast sitting down.
2
Very patient Guide / Instructor. I think I'd have a hoarse throat by now and shown him off the range after that many safety "oversights". Also not so keen to carry a bag full of mercury fulminate based charges around the battlefield.
2
When you say “the entire war” for the USN (8:53) it equates to about 18 months. :)
2
40C here in Aust - so not much need for a Boiler - Merry Christmas! :)
2
@charlesmartin8454 Thanks. Holidays have pretty much taken a back seat here for people in the Emergency Services / Defence Force.
2
Can we look forward to you commandeering Mrs Drach's kitchen for the steel hardening / tempering experiments?
2
@Jpdt19 So no Bessemer process simulation in the oven?
2
Navy calls it Fleet Base East because there is also a Garden Island in WA which also a RAN base (HMAS Stirling).
2
Broadcast from Aust or pre-recorded?
1
USN vs RN would be an application of Train hard, Fight easy. Having a "near peer" OPFOR forces you to be serious. If the USN planned to fight say Iceland it would not have proved beneficial against the IJN. This continues today with say the Large Scale Global Exercise, Ex Talisman Sabre, etc.
1
Merry Christmas and thanks for all your work during the year. Currently enjoying Boxing Day here.
1
No idea what that was about but one day of the year, its fine.
1
Is there some sort of political reason for using the First World War ensign in the thumbnail? I was trying to reconcile a Type XXI boat but in 1914 - 1918.
1
Graf Spee slim pickings, leave it to the Kiwi's
1
Presumable the application of Mission Command as opposed to micro management?
1
Surely Babbage's Difference Engine was the first "computer"?
1
@AMD7027 Not obsolete, still in use Sponson <> the gun, its a add on - e.g. many vehicles have internal sponsons as stowage areas.
1
@ivanthemadvandal8435 Agreed, we use "fleet" as a generic term for equipment - e.g. the Fleet Manager for the generator "fleet", or the L159 "fleet", etc.
1
I though CNO was Chief of Naval Operations or has the title evolved since the 1930s?
1
Yes, unfortunately Melbourne 1 : Voyager 0
1
Perhaps also a stopwatch / timer to tell you when 5 minutes is up?
1
Drive from Perth to Albany? You need a WA fixer who can read a map. Hope you enjoyed your stay. Sandgropers are pretty hospitable.
1
@thelonerick Yep I just love when people arrive here (say Sydney) and then say they are "popping down" to Melbourne and I get to watch their face when I tell them its a 10+ hour drive.
1
1:44 looks like Cockatoo Island in Sydney harbour?
