Hopefully you can make it down to Canberra.
1
"a little bit away" Williamstown is about a 2 hour drive from Melbourne. The Cerberus (both the wreck, and the naval base) is near Melbourne. The SF 'ship' (fishing boat) is the Krait, used by Z Force. Canberra (halfway between Melbourne and Sydney) also has the Australian War Memorial.
1
@simperous4308 Yes, but its a about an hour (just in case people thought it was 10mins or something) and then you need wheels at the other end.
1
I hope these (or a sub set) come to the AWM at some point. Perhaps RAN could buy it and put therm on display at HMAS Cerberus or HMAS Creswell as a PME tool.
1
@GerryWestenberg How much room do they take up (in "display mode" as opposed to "storage mode")? I'm in Army (a LTCOL) and know some people in the Senior Service and I maybe able to ask on your behalf -- or at least find some points of contact.
1
Surely you need to still strip the gun so the laser can be used on areas not externally visible? Also if it is a Class 3 or higher, there should be safety measures in place to prevent people just walking past accidentally looking at the beam (for example, at 8:20 its basically pointed at the camera)? Ultrasonic cleaners might also have an application in this space.
1
I'm guessing the "edited" version is on its way?
1
Just wondering if the wargame results were "professional judgement" or the outcomes of a simulation product?
1
Kia Ora! to my Kiwi mates across the ditch.
1
Just use a tank with stab, ballistic computer and a Laser Range Finder. ;)
1
01:55 Nov 4th, 2022? Sorry I missed it. :)
1
A DSO with 3 bars - surely the Admiralty could nominate him for a higher gong, instead of 4 copies of the same one?
1
16 mins out of 46 devoted to Intro, Ads and Caveats.
1
FYSA, I find the red text on the blue background (IJN), very hard to read at any resolution. The USN labeling is only marginally clearer at 1080p. I gave up and just focused on the audio.
1
Don't forget Narvik, the evacuation from Crete, Operation Avalanche and Operation Dragoon in your list of European amphibious activities.
1
Kia Ora! from across the ditch.
1
USNI participated in a World of Warships activity? If its anything like their land domain title ("Waste of Time") that would have been a traumatic clash of fact vs fiction. I hope that company is not infiltrating the USNI, just as they have messed up the Tank Museum.
1
New opening music?
1
TLAMs and CWIS are a bit of a give away of late Cold War refits.
1
The Brent’s accuracy is also one of its flaws. A MG is designed to produce a beaten zone with a cone of fire in order affect a large area (dimensions vary with range). If the weapon is too accurate, then you end up with a smaller beaten zone.
1
TOG is crap and represents how glacial naval design was.
1
Turn up late and still get dessert? If they had made them out of pykrete, the cooling mechanism would have been built in.
1
"smaller 18.1" guns"
1
I hope they kept the location secret, so the Chinese don't steal it.
1
15:28 "make its way up Australia's East Coast" whereas the graphic has them going South to Melbourne, Perth and then the Philippines?
1
1:02 The blue print and some photos have three, triple turrets. Other 'photos (e.g.: 3:29) with a "HMS Sheffield" caption have four, triple turrets????
1
I presume the light guns on the turret rooves are not meant to be used currently with the main batteries, or is blast, concussion, etc. not a thing on ships?
1
Unsure why you actually decantered the beer from the cans? Also it appears you re-countered the Spanish ration plan after consuming the English beer ration?
1
The last or second last (depending on the model you use) layer of the "protection onion". I guess for naval gunnery you can't really use witness plates?
1
Happy New Year to you and Mrs D and welcome to 2023!
1
45:00 The range estimation with the naked eye was quite informative, but presumably lookouts with binoculars and those in the Directors would have better than 1:1 zoom, not withstanding fog, sea spray, rain squalls, etc.
1
Thank you for the smaller format. Finding time to watch 1 - 1.5hr videos is problematic.
1
Wide ranging tastes - earlier a Napoleonic cooking segment with audio commentary / laugh track and hand modeling from Mrs Drach and now this?! Brave Lass letting you cut that salted beef and bash the ship's biscuits, with her fingers nearby.
1
What is the significance of the Boomerang and Emu stencils in the Wardroom?
1
Hope you are enjoying your visit to God's country. ;)
1
Well they need good museums over that side as there's bu**er all else to do there, apart from digging stuff out of the ground.
1
If the gun carriage has been destroyed, then the gun crew that used to serve that gun are probably in the triage queue for the Surgeon.
1
Did Mrs D buy the T shirt for you?
1
Polybius's "The Histories" is on the bookshelf, next to Tacitus and Herodotus. Sounds like you aren't going to cover the 2nd or 3rd wars - a pity.
1
I guess Kamchatka's exploits have already had enough air time?
1
19:30: CAPT to RADM, just skipped Commodore?
1
@stargazer5784 Well not in the RN, RAN or RCN. It goes CAPT (O6), CDRE (O7), RADM (O8), etc. In USN terms, the equivalent is a ""rear admiral (lower half)".
1
Oh I thought we were off to visit KMS Tirpitz.
1
For what its worth we tend to pronounce is "Melbern" with "`~ern" instead of "~ourne".
1
I gather someone determined that there was no need for both the main guns and the smaller weapons atop the turrets to be manned at the same time? Being exposed to friendly blast and concussion as well as enemy fire is probably not the best duty station.
1
The downside of living here - all the April Fools Day items arrive a day late.
1
I gather "working at heights" OHS requirements (harnesses, lines, etc.) don't apply in the US, at least in terms of climbing to the funnel - as if falling from the funnel is OK, but from the slightly higher mast isn't.
1
0:50: "Chanced upon". I suspect no one plans a trip to the US with a programme of ship visits to "chance upon" anything. :)
1
Re the armour issue, have you looked at the various "witness plates: at most military ordnance locations or even say the Tank Museum?
1
A bit of a drive from Oz.
