  1. Sal is near a lifeboat, not a life raft? The sexual harassment issue would be hard to police. The US military members would have no jurisdiction/command authority over the civilian drivers. Similarly are the truck drivers subject to US law (I'm assuming the pier wasn't considered part of Gaza) and I'm guessing there was no FBI detachment (sorry I'm not familiar enough with the US Justice system but I'm guessing the FBI is the nearest equivalent to our Australian Federal Police) there to enforce it?

Where were the Officers and Senior Non Commissioned Officers - leading and showing initiative to fight the fire and save the ship, let alone drilling and re-drilling until the required standards are met and maintained. Also who is responsible for the poor stowage and stores scattered everywhere? Admittedly I'm an Army O5, not a navy guy but I can't believe this cluster.

  8. Are those RoRo ships suitable? E.g. Can the deck support say 72t Abram’s ready for deployment, as opposed to say the same number of square metres with say a load of maybe 4 cars? It imposes delay to ammunition, fully fuel and up armour such vehicles at the destination, they may well be required to deploy and fight from the Sea Point of Entry. I’m not a mariner, but I’ve very interested in my armoured vehicle being mission capable at the destination.

  18. This will have addition flow on effects given USMC's refocus on basically "the beach". This has lead to the USMC trimming its tanks and reducing its artillery, to focus on the littoral environment and not much further. The idea being the USMC seizes the beachhead and then US Army takes over and moves further inland. This exploitation will take longer if there are no vessels to bring them ashore.

  26. To be fair my understanding was that the Reaper had its ID "off", so I'm not too surprised that they reacted that way to an "unidentified" threat. Of course if the two Operations (Operation Prosperity Guardian and Mission Aspides) were better co-ordinated there might be better passage of information or even sectors assigned to each so that these various flight paths / surveillance zones were de-conflicted.

I guess caissons around pylons and collision protection dolphins are a question of the bridge's construction budget plus no doubt when the bridge was built (late 1970s?) the risk assessment wasn't based on 100,000t vessels? No one wants to spend money on non sexy things like improving collision protection as opposed to something that improves traffic capacity, etc.

  37. Sal, I'm on the wrong side of the Pacific to really comment but the the ADF has pumps and storage bladders (usually used to "fight for" fresh water). I'm guessing (key caveat) that the US Army and USMC Engineers have them too. Couldn't they pump from the ocean and fill bladders that could then be used to either fill your tankers/tenders or even use flat bed trucks to move the bladders to the fire front and free the tankers/tenders to be used elsewhere? There should be sufficient stocks of bladders (or even acquire those PVC containers in mesh, used on farms, etc.) to provide a rotational supply of bladders. Sorry for the Monday morning quarter-backing.
