  2.  @nvelsen1975  This isn't an 'older building' this is a relatively new apartment. They don't build things for 'the average' the build them for 99th percentile. Standards are international. There's not been a building with less than 2.1m ceiling in a century, and floor heights are greater than ceiling heights.

  4.  @nvelsen1975  Modern floor heights are pretty standard worldwide, generally around 3m for residential and 4m for offices. There's not been a 2m floor height since the middle ages. Ceiling height might be as little as 2.1m but is usually a safe minimum of 2.3m and then another 70cm is the floor/ceiling structure as they need to run pipes, have some concrete for the next floor. Generally residential buildings are close to the minimum 3m unless particularly expensive. There's ISO standards for all this, most countries import things and often have international design firms for large buildings. Unless it's a self build house or ultra luxury apartment you can be pretty sure of the height no matter where you are.

  6. Without power it becomes basically impossible to do it intentionally. It goes where the current and momentum pushes it. Also would a terrorist strike when the bridge was almost empty? That’d be like the Moscow terrorists shooting the cleaning crew of the theatre after the performance. Strictly possible but unlikely.

  9. Commercial drones are dirt cheap and store footage onboard by default. This is a very ignorant take. You'd think that after 2 years that 'drones are expensive' and the presence of commercial drones on the battlefield wouldn't be something that doesn't get considered.

  10. That amount of ship will take out any bridge anyone has ever built. You know what we call a bridge that could survive that? LAND! No seriously it would need an artificial island. The ship weighs more than the bridge and it hit almost directly on the pylon, it was no glancing blow. A much newer here was taken out by a much much smaller boat 50 years ago and they still won’t let big ships under the replacement.

And with rare exceptions queues are not more than a few minutes (if you go just after lunch you can usually walk right in). Turns out when everyone needs to vote making it easy is popular, and being independently managed means no incentive to make it harder in certain areas.

You will find a more negative attitude towards Americans online than in person because the worst Americans never leave the self proclaimed best country in the world (even though they have nothing to compare it to). I don’t think Australians largely care about the military base (it’s in the middle of nowhere, half the country probably doesn’t know it’s there). You have unfortunately decided to blame a whole nation for the views of a couple of misinformed people. Yes, probably some people are concerned at being dragged into another war alongside the US (Australia being the only nation that has fought alongside the US in every war for the last 100 years) but there’s no one that thinks that is the same as being asked to fight China ‘for’ the USA. Australia relies on the treaty with the US to guarantee security. And also the US is the biggest investor in Australia. But that doesn’t mean there are no issues. The thing is, with any sufficiently diverse country everyone will find something to hate.

  18. In Australia the homicide rate is 2 people per 100,000 (per year, as at 2023). Most of it occurring in the home by someone known to the victim). In Washington DC the rate was around 40 per 100,000 population in 2023. Obviously there’s not zero violent crime in Australia, but it’s one of the safest western countries in the world. People are shocked when something violent happens, because outside domestic violence, it’s very unexpected. One incident will make the news for months or years. The last public mass shooting was in 1996. The first ever school shooter was arrested last May (no one was killed). Even situations where you might expect a criminal, say in the drug trade, to have a weapon, they rarely carry it, given it would be a crime to just have it on them, so they tend only to dig them up to use on each other in pre planned actions. As a non indigenous male you are very very safe, as a female, still very safe, but like most places they can still be at a higher risk of assault than men.

  20. Tugs are possibly unworkable at busy times. Better options, replace bridge with tunnel, or move port to reclaimed land outside the bridge (not sure how possible here). If the river was shallow enough you can also build artificial islands to protect the pylons.

  23. It’s going to freak you out that there’s probably only had a dozen bridges where this couldn’t happen due to artificial islands around the pylons so that the ship gets grounded first. Any others that have pylons in the water way would not survive a direct impact with a ship half the size. It’s been a while but this is one of dozens of collapses. Here decades later they still don’t let big ships under the replacement :/ Power failure plus a ship way too big for a port designed 50 years ago is all it takes. Just terribly unlucky the power failure wasn’t a minute earlier or later.

If you didn't need something crazy like 2/3 majority to cancel things, you'd just pass the budget for things when passing the legislation for those same things, leaving only the controversial things to be renewed each year (eg, specific end dates for that specific legislation), not the whole government spending on things no one is denying need the money. Things like Ukraine and extra funding at the border might still be contentious and require re-authorizing funding for a period, but you wouldn't end up just ransoming the whole country over it.

  32. The border is ‘closed’ at non check points, it’s just enormous and congress is holding up funding to make it worse to help Trump get elected. There’s video after video of people climbing the ‘wall’ which just seems to serve to prevent people returning to Mexico. And most illegal immigrants fly into the country and overstay rather than walk in.

  34. There’s no bridge in the world that could withstand a ship half the size hitting it. New bridges if in shipping lanes need artificial islands around the pylons to actually ground the ship well before it hits the bridge. Alternatively they now use tunnels instead to avoid shipping traffic or if it’s too deep. In the 70’s when the bridge was built, ships were much much smaller. The issue is we’re making bigger and bigger ships and squeezing them into ports not designed for them. Not a problem with the bridge. Ultimately this was a power failure on a ship that had no margin for error and possibly some actions like dropping the anchor may have contributed, too early to say. But it misunderstands the physics in play if you think a ‘bumper’ could stop a ship like this. This is worst case scenario, the ship weighs likely many times what the bridge does!

  35.  @MattAtHazmat pagers don’t use lithium ion batteries they use Nickel Cadmium batteries. Tiny tiny capacity batteries, if they released all the energy at once you probably wouldn’t notice the pagers getting warm.

  36. The bare minimum soviet apartment was 2.58m to ceiling (often higher - the joke was they felt lower :o ), so higher than most western buildings of the time. Most modern apartments are 3-3.3m floor plates and this looks pretty modern, given it has a website for the development looking like it's < 10 years old. There's not been a ceiling in an apartment below 2.4m in decades even in the west, they need to sell. New buildings are also often designed by international firms and it's simply not worth the savings to make buildings less high than is common. 30cm is very very undersized as it's not just the floor (itself often 30cm) but also there are usually pipes under there for things like toilets/showers and sinks in the apartment above. So more like 70cm as otherwise you need to box out weird uneven ceilings.

  37. There’s been dozens of bridge collapses from much smaller ships hitting them since this was built. It’s actually impossible to build a bridge that could withstand this kind of impact. There’s only 2 mitigations possible. 1) Move the pylons so the central span is the entire width of the river or at least way bigger. Or 2) build an artificial island so the ship runs aground well before it impacts the bridge. Where neither are possible these days tunnels are favoured.

  38.  @markalbert9011 capacitors don’t have a current problem as much as they have a persistence problem. You can store a lot in a capacitor but the problem is a pager battery doesn’t store any significant amount of charge, they are too small and the wrong chemistry. A capacitor still has to get the charge from somewhere and it has to use it relatively quickly, so unless it’s plugged in until seconds before the energy has to come from the tiny battery anyway.

  39. Life expectancy is nearly a decade longer. Lots of reasons. Less smoking, stricter traffic laws (including RBTs and speed cameras everywhere), preventative medicine (Australia spends less per person on healthcare than the US but spends it earlier when it’s cheaper and there’s less profit taking (eg drug ads are banned so people don’t get over medicated to the point they would be better without it). Strong vaccination program etc. Basically no mass shootings because self defense isn’t a reason to own a gun so almost none fall into the hands of mentally unstable people and kids. (And high security/storage requirements to the point many sports shooters leave their guns at the club). But yeah, Australian’s don’t eat much better, beyond slightly smaller serving sizes and a few less things with as much sugar. Healthcare in the US is great if you’re in the top 1%. In Australia it’s great if you’re in the top 10% and very good otherwise, but there are subtle signs that is at risk.

Not to mention you can find video online people forgetting fireworks in their bag and making it through security. It’s not as secure as people think. People aren’t wealthy enough to just jaunt around on international flights outside the top 10% of the world population either.

  42. Yes, you just need to go to even less safe countries than the US and then you need to live in barbed wire compounds with private security. I prefer a more equal society where you don’t have to tell the story about how your gate was blocked and you were shot at when you arrived home because people are *desperate*. You can’t defend against desperation 24x7, it’s exhausting. Far nicer just to have slightly less and have the poorest have more. Tax dollars well spent.

  43. If you think their crime rates are bad you should look at the statistics from conservative states. Turns out if you don’t provide any basic social services people turn to crime. In the 50’s tax rates were higher, there were more public services. Now regressive policies have lowered taxes and left everyone to fend for themselves with violence the inevitable result. 66 homicides per 100,000 people in St Louis, Missouri. 3.4 per 100,000 in New York City. 12.48 in Dallas. Don’t believe everything you see on TV. The only solution that works is tougher gun laws and better social programs. The US doesn’t have any progressives at all. The US has more people as a % of the population in prison than any other country in the world. Enforcement isn’t the problem, treating prison as the solution is.

  45.  @zx9124 customs even in well funded western countries only spot checks a tiny fraction of imports much less exports, and they focus on high risk imports with dodgy paperwork. Israel has shown they can forge passports of other countries, making a shipment look non threatening is a piece of cake. Hell you can search online and see videos of people that accidentally took fireworks through airport security which is way tighter than cargo exports. And once in the country no one if any predominantly poorer people on watch list ever do travel, is taking a pager locked to a Lebanese network abroad to a country where just having a pager is suspicious and useless.

The uncomfortable truth, is if you want to discourage people from fleeing dangerous areas you're going to need your country to be more dangerous than the areas politicians are telling you it's too dangerous to accept people from. Or they won't stop, even under threat to their lives. Every bit of research shows the stronger the border the MORE not less illegal immigrants there are, because most illegal immigrants just overstay visas, and they're more likely to do so if they think they won't be able to get back in. And that's ignoring that most of the immigrants that are seeking asylum are by definition, legal, if their claims are valid, regardless of if they have permission to enter.

New bridges that take into account new large ships like this have to have artificial islands around the pylons to ground the ship well away as basically no structure could survive an impact. If the water is too deep for that then they build tunnels these days. (Or have a wider span). So it’s less the bridge is old and more the newer ships were never considered in the 70’s. Especially as they’ve had a dozen or so bridge collapses due to impact around the world since this one was built.
