  3. @Justin X Asian is not an ethnicity. We are more diverse than any other continent in the world, culturally, genetically, and linguistically. Just because it's Asian doesn't mean it's not foreign. LOL When Japan invaded the Asian countries, did you all give up and say "At least they're Asian"? Maybe in your countries you did. We didn't. Foreign is foreign. We were not as strongly influenced by India or China. And as Austronesians, our bloodline goes beyond Asia to Oceania and Madagascar. Replacing one foreign name with another doesn't fix things. It only makes us even more identity-less.

She's a Filipino citizen, she identifies as a Filipino, she speaks Filipino, she has lived in the country since she was 18, and she really does look more Filipina than European, other than her height. She's not even THAT pale. What the heck are people complaining about in the comments?

  8. Actually they were worse. Some Indonesian Muslim sultanates openly enslaved Christian and animist natives from surrounding regions. And the Dutch did nothing, because they were slavers themselves and the number one customers of the slave trade for their plantations. An estimated 200 to 300 thousand people were enslaved from the 18th to 19th centuries. It was so bad that the Spanish government actually threatened the Netherlands because Muslim pirates continually attacked Christian communities in the Philippines, Maluku, and Sulawesi for the slave trade. Papuans were also a common target.

That should give you an idea of what reality is. There are plenty of vlogs about the quarantine here in the Philippines. Watch those. Then compare it with what she said, and you'll realize just how much of a liar she is.

Pakistan, like India, is one of the countries where code-switching with English (and Arabic) is extremely common (at least for the educated class). Watch a Pakistan TV show some time. Code-switching works precisely because you CAN speak any of the languages used fluently. It is not the same thing as loanwords where you're only using a word or two in a foreign language. I'm assuming you're a monoglot or come from a country which is primarily a monoglot, and thus truly do not understand how it feels like for people to live in an environment where everyone speaks several languages at once. It's not as confusing as you think, and it's definitely not "harmful".

  20. Also no. Not a lot of people eat wildlife in the rest of Asia. The only regions where it is extremely widespread is China and parts of Indochina. In other parts of Southeast Asia, wild animals are considered poverty food, only eaten when there's nothing else to eat. Contrast this with China were wildlife is considered luxury food and are very expensive. China is even more guilty because not only do they eat endangered wildlife, they POACH them from neighboring countries illegally. Pangolins especially nowadays are poached from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia by Chinese smugglers. Every year you hear news stories of another Chinese "fishing ship" caught with THOUSANDS of frozen pangolins, turtles, seahorses, and other endangered wildlife. And Beijing does nothing. Worse, they now claim the South China Sea, so they can continue poaching as much as they want now that they have warship guns pointed at everyone else.

  26. It's ironic because Christian countries accept those refugees freely, while Muslim countries turn their back. When the Rohingya crisis began, the Philippines, despite having decades of Islamist violence in its southernmost islands, opened its door immediately for refugees, while Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Indonesia only accepted them with reluctance, and with the assurance that they are only temporary.

  35. I think she meant she escaped North Korea in 2009, so 17 to 18 (depending on her birthday and when this interview was). Both she and Stephen estimated her daughter's age to be 7, which means she only left China for South Korea at least 7 years ago, so 2012. She spent around 3 years in China.

If you look at old photos of Southeast Asian Muslim women, NONE of them are wearing Arab-style head coverings. Just traditional clothing.

  41. These responses are from Muslim Filipinos which will be the ones affected by the new law. They had special laws that allowed child marriages because the provinces of Muslim Filipinos are autonomous (they have separate civil laws from the rest of the country). For 95% of the Philippines, the legal age of marriage is and always has been 18.
