Getting someone to give a cop their ID is a pure power play that tells them if the person is going to be a cooperative sheep or a trouble maker.

Thanks y'all and everyone keep your cameras handy - good luck in 2020 to all of us.

That title - I've been saying that for thirty-four years give or take.
37
Marijuana, mushrooms, peyote, ayahuasca, ibogaine, and any other natural psychedelics all need to be legalized. Just don't let the cigarette companies take over the industry - gotta keep these in the hands of the people.
22
Always amazed there isn't more extra judicial retaliation against cops for the all the harm they do. It's not like they suffer professionally or personally for this crap.
18
That's part of it, but it's much more about theater and keeping us distracted by the oligarchical Owner class and at eachothers throats over the false narrative of Left versus Right.
12
So glad it's not just us in the States having to deal with such foolishness.
9
I want to hang out with this guy. I bet he's got great stories about some crazy shit he's seen and done!
7
The problem is this guy didn't pay-off the local enforcers first.
7
Many of the police are Proud Boys or at least identify with and/or support their far-right, neo-fascist ideology. There's a reason they are cops and not EMT's or care givers. They're the same kind of authoritarian losers who join the military instead of the Peace Corps.
7
Thanks, Mr Hedges. Grateful you're out there.
6
The Klan were made up of Conservative Democrats and Republicans before LBJ signed the Civil Rights act of 1968 and the Southern Strategy eliminated those Democrats and turned the Klan deep Red. You make the same mistake the right wing trolls always make - you ignore history.
6
@texan6673 Wonder if there is a 911 call out there some where. Me thinks this cab driver needs a lawyer to sue both the cops and the Walmart.
5
@robeson1231 I've heard Dr Cornel West correctly refer to the genocide of indigenous peoples as "America's original sin" putting that ahead of even the enslavement of his own ancestors. Like you said, we've always been pathetic.
4
Practically speaking as well. But then, to a greater or lesser degree it always has been. It's just swung back to a greater degree again. Neo fascism now - next stop neo feudalism.
4
<sarcasm>Gee, I wonder why?</sarcasm> You expect the mouthpieces of oligarchy to do anything but reinforce propaganda? Come on now.
4
I'd argue they are not either/or subjects but that both very much exist together. Class warfare and everything that comes with that is everywhere, but there is also a divide expressed in many ways and most places between people who live in rural regions and urban centers. There are individual exceptions to all of this, but recognition of city vs country socio political and other cultural differences have been around for a very long time. I could see the US reaching a place where rural communities and small towns not on any highway or interstate system are largely abandoned by the federal and state authorities to fend for themselves. The next stage in Mr Hedge's aptly called Sacrifice Zones.
4
@Dr.Sharron Not just white people - the crazy is everywhere. North and South Sudan, the Koreas, even the entire religion of Islam does it between Sunni and Shia (and the various Kharijite sects) just like Protestants and Catholics do. War and subjugation and exploitation of other people, animals and things is damn near a universal pastime among a broad spectrum of our species.
4
@LuisAldamiz But the older ones do love their socialist programs - they are more socialist than they realize and confuse "communist" with "socialist" due to a lifetime of jingoistic indoctrination. And plenty of people who would identify as democrats and think of themselves as being on the left aren't socialists either. Socialist, much like anarchist, is a broad term that is used incorrectly and with little understanding by many people. And I'll add that my day-to-day life has a lot more in common with a poor person who identifies as"right" than any billionaire. To quote another YouTuber - it isn't red versus blue, it's the 1% versus me and you.
4
@texan6673 That's the reason the cop was there.

Great interview, but I'm tired of hearing "family-of-four" used as the basis for these measurements. I understand that has been the traditional standard for measuring poverty, but the American Dream ideal of father-mother-two kids is archaic and needs to be changed for the age we are in. It should be based on a single adult and adjusted appropriately for any spouse and/or children from there. I'd argue that any single person making less than 20K a year is living in poverty in this country. And if you live in a larger US city you are probably living in extreme poverty. If anything, being poor and having children can put a person in a better place than if you are single and poor as you will have more access to shelter and other assistance for your children.

"Trump curious"? "Wants to link up with Trump"? What candidate named Tulsi Gabbard are these two talking about? That characterization makes it sound like they are saying that she's not a Russian asset but that she is really a Trump asset. So still a Putin's Puppet or a useful idiot? Greeeaaat. This is one more example of why our species can never have nice things.
3
Politicians in general (but especially the Democrats) always remind me of the scene from Army of Darkness where Bruce Campbell explains about all the sweet words he'd spoken the night before - "Oh that's just what we call pillow talk, baby, that's all."
3
I couldn't get through it one sitting either. I don't know how anyone can watch this and defend the cop. From the start - opening the door and pulling the guy out of his cab. This should be in every training video as how NOT to do the job.
2
This cop is doing a lot of things wrong here, but I'm with vad R about the camera. The cop had his hands full tassering and assaulting the cab driver so the camera coming loose was probably accidental. I'd like to hear the 911 call from the store manager. Bet it was a Karen call.
2
Then being a billionaire should be right out. Bought and sold DNC is a sad sick joke. Maybe four more years of old Bankrupt Donny will end this frelling charade once and for all.
2
@kateoneal4215 It was always the plan.
2
America - still destroying the village in order to save it.
2
Karl Malone - TY. Don't know if it was OP's comment elsewhere or someone's else's but I replied with just about the same words. Think I used "indigenous population" instead since the same thing happened throughout the Americas both North and South by just about every Western European invading army and people (someone must of kept at least one or two treaties somewhere - anywhere? Anyone?).
2
@coloradopeoplesnews7676 I like the way you write, Frank. Saves me the work.
2
HA! The cops eyes are glowing like Terminator unit. How apropos.
2
Thank you! I was wondering if it was just me.
2
I know there are good people doing police work. Just a damn shame they're in the minority and the job itself is so awful that it seems to make even he best of them awful too.
2
@74dartman13 much obliged.
2
@LuisAldamiz I hear what you are saying and appreciate your thoughts - good stuff for me to think about. I'd love to hang out and get more into it all. I'll still argue that I probably still have more in common with a poor conservative person than a billionaire. But I'm not a socialist - or an anarchist or capitalist. I fall more into the left on most topics but I have some beliefs that would fall under the right side too. I find both useful and problematic issues with all of these labels. I'm just a guy trying to walk and chew gum at the same time. It doesn't always make sense, but I'm a complicated man and no one understands me but my cat. Thanks for engaging in a constructive way, my friend.

Toledo, Ohio - well there's your problem. Toledo is one of those cities like Baltimore and Phildelphia (and everywhere else FFS!) thats got a lot of broken policing going on. There is also a lot of racism in Ohio in general and Toledo especially. I don't need to see video of how the manager interacted with the cab driver to have a fairly good idea of who the Karen was in this situation. And no cop gets to open the door of someones vehicle and put hands on them like that. That entitled, abusive, asshole needs to be fired and put on a do-not-hire list of people unqualified to police the community. I hope the cab driver gets a lawyer and sues both the police and the Walmart where he was waiting for the person who was picking up their prescriptions IN THE WALMART! <rhetorical question>What's it going to take to stop this madness?</rhetorical question>

Damn right it's a done deal. Always was. I only care because it's gonna be a hell of a ride as things get worse.
1
An agnostic AMEN! and thank you.
1
How does anyone not see how fucked up this is? What the hell is wrong with some people? Like so much going wrong right now, it's just sad. We're capable of so much better.
1
Cops who escalate like this all need to be fired. Agro cops suck. Wonder what would happen if he'd been a person of color.
1
Checking websites and twitter it seems like this was recorded in the past week or two.
1
This is disgusting and without a question a militarized police state. Not my country any more. Film it all - upload to everyone!

BoMO - say no more

@jnolasco2585 It sounds like Curtis is in a special situation. Most urban areas do require you to be tied into the grid to have the home be considered habitable. I think if someone tries to live too long with the power off they'll get a notice from the city or someone. But that doesn't mean you have to use their power. If you could be conservative enough you could get by with a small solar system and pay the monthly charge for just having the service - which hopefully would not be more than 20 or 25 dollars. It's part of a low-impact urban homesteading philosophy. Live within the rules but minimize your dependence on the state and the corporations through self-sufficiency wherever and however you can. And Good on ya, Curtis Battig! Way to get creative and hang in there. Stay strong, brother!

If you don't declare a war you can't lose it.

@DoritoSammich One Democrat signed the Bill - the President, Lyndon B Johnson. The correct question would be how many progressive or liberal politicians of either party voted for the Civil Rights act of 1968 (which expanded on the 1964 bill of the same name and other legislation prior to that). The numbers are 327–93 (166 Democrats and 161 Republicans) in the House and 71–20 (42 Democrats and 29 Republicans) in the Senate. Anyone who didn't vote for the bill was probably a conservative politician and today would part of the Republican - or more appropriately Trumpublican party.

@justice_was_taken Unfortunately both George and the nitwit troll I was playing with share our planet and probably even live in the U.S. But it's pretty clear that they either came from dumbfucksylvania or possibly headuphisassistan. Hell, they might even have dual citizenship in both. If George had any clue he'd delete this entire post and save himself further humiliation, but you know he won't because he thinks he's sticking it to the libs.

@georgeramirezjr1111 - You are correct in that Byrd was a member of the KKK in the early 1940s and even tried to stand in the way of the civil rights legislation during the 1960's. But he later renounced his affiliation with the hate group. He called his KKK affiliation “an extraordinarily foolish mistake” in his autobiography. When Byrd died in 2010, the civil rights organization, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, praised him for his capacity to change. Maybe some day you too will renounce your extraordinarily foolish mistakes. Stop hitting yourself, Junior. You are just making yourself look stupid and ignorant.

@Pigpress I prefer lamb with a bit of mint jelly if they have any. But I like piggies even more. Bacon, pork cops, ham, shredded pork anything - tasty tasty!

@davidmichaud1029 I was going to join the Navy but I couldn't pass the test. Trouble makers is their way of dehumanizing us stupid civilians who wont comply with their orders. The vast majority of "we the people", including myself, hand over our ID without hesitation or a single thought when the police ask for it because we don't want trouble with them. A smart trouble maker is a little lamb when the master's dog has us by the scruff so that it will let us go and we can get back to making some good trouble when it chases after someone else. There's probably some Airborne saying about picking your fights instead letting a fight pick you, right? Glad you made it home, soldier.
