  6. ​​​ @benbim540 Those figures are highly misleading, i.e. meaningless. The only comparisons that tell us something of value are based on Purchasing Power Parity. What Russia, China, India etc. are getting for their trillion+ is several times more (and often much better) than what the US is getting for its trillion+. I agree that even with PPP, the US is the most militaristic country in the world, but the ratios are not nearly as skewed as simple dollar figures suggest.

Now it relies on ludicrously expensive AND unreliable American LNG, which the US has just suspended shipments of to Europe as it needs the stuff itself! 😅

I used to teach a general humanities course at a college in Canada a couple of decades ago, and one of the units covered Marx's understanding of history and his critique of alienation in capitalism. We had quite a few adult students from China, and at the end of the course they'd regularly tell me, with appreciation, that the Marx I introduced them to was very different from the Marx they'd been taught in China. Btw, ALL of my students readily understood Marx's critique of alienation, a phenomenon they were familiar with from the work/jobs they had to do to support themselves.

  19. Serbia's a for all intents and purposes a colony of the West. It's governed by a comprador political class (regardless of which party is in government at any one time). An entire province of Serbia (Kosovo and Metohija) is under direct foreign (US) occupation. The only reason Serbia's current government has refrained from joining the sanctions on Russia is that over 80% of the population is against it and would topple any government that took openly hostile measures against Russia. Ironically, although a member of both the EU and NATO, Hungary is genuinely more independent than Serbia. Belarus and Russia, of course, are indeed independent states.

  30. The one thing that annoys me about Russians is their naivety. Innocence of heart is a real virtue and it's what makes Russians such a good bunch of people, but their political leadership has no right to the luxury of naivety. Paul Craig Roberts had been warning in his blogposts for years that Putin's restraint and Moscow's desire to get along with an ever disrespectful West was sending all the wrong signals to Washington, which was incapable of seeing that except as weakness. Throughout the 2010s, PCG kept warning that Moscow's mildness would only embolden the West into a proxy war in Ukraine, which is exactly what happened. So, yes, I do hold Putin and his advisors in part responsible for this war. Putin himself admitted last fall that it was a mistake not to have gone into Donbass back in 2014 and finished everything before tens of thousands of people lost their lives.
