I think a lot of it is status, and the reverence for whiteness. They would probably find Gareth from The Office attractive too.

@jontwest The problem isn't with people from different cultures who choose to have children -- they should be commended. It's the judgmental and rigid societies that should be criticized if they are not open to change.

@guana2885 It's a really complex question! Undoubtedly, white supremacy exists. Its influence permeates Japan, and it is especially destructive due to their own history with isolation and imperialist aggression. But warning bells go off in my head when white people (and especially white dudes) immediately rush to tell everyone that non-white people have no perceived value in a foreign country. It often says more about their own biases and a desire to prop up their own worth relative to that group, and in Japan's case, carve out a space for themselves as superior. It's a very destructive pattern that I've noticed.

@Gordon Graham "Yes, such as not being rented an apartment, because they are unemployed or because they look dishevelled or have long hair or tattoos, or because they look too young?" This is a poor argument. These things you've mentioned are all transient and changeable. Ethnicity is not. Being singled out for it is unacceptable.
1
@jontwest I should have been more specific in my response; when I said "cultures," that was inclusive of the term "ethnicity" as well. I can understand if you were replying to my comment based on the assumption that I wasn't, though. As far as your second paragraph goes: it is a sad reality that many societies are unaccepting of people who are seemingly different from them, and a big example of this is phenotype. I can say that it is painful when you're othered for being different due to this, but at the same time, the only way for society to change is to see the vast amount of differences inherent to the human species and become more broad-minded. This won't happen overnight, and parents should be very careful when it comes to raising their children, but the onus is on society at large to change. Not the other way around.
1
That is incorrect. You need to read a few more history books, particularly in regards to the U.S. and the underrecognized labor of many groups that helped to establish it. As it stands, people who are as uneducated as you are part of the problem.
1
I know, right? Takeshi might have to fight his own discriminatory thoughts first.

@hastamanana8696 Statistics about international traveling, purchasing luxury imported goods, taking foreign language classes, etc.
1
@The Victory Over Himself Japan certainly has a history of xenophobia and nationalism. However, there is no Japanese equivalent to white supremacy. Even though Japan's actions prior to WWII were aggressive and militaristic, the scale of what they did is incomparable to France, England, and Spain, for instance.
1
@hastamanana8696 Foreigners are not a monolith.
1
@hastamanana8696 I strongly disagree with you. However, you are entitled to your opinions.

Wealth has nothing to do with being high-caste, actually. Most middle class Indian women tend to have similar mannerisms to her. Also, while you may not intend this, your comment about her "speaking English beautifully" is incredibly patronizing -- it may be her native language, and she might be more proficient than you.
1
Because European/Anglo countries predominantly invaded Asian and African countries for eons, stealing their wealth and abusing the people who lived there. That's why.
1
@Hajime N. You are completely right. It is backwards and racist to block out people of a certain race/religion/nationality, and people who justify it with comments like "They're just nervous or uncomfortable" are almost equally as bad. Guess what makes ME uncomfortable? People acting like assholes for no reason. So maybe that kind of behavior should stop instead.
1
Yes, if they realize what your nationality is.

No ethnicity is guaranteed to be attractive or more likely to be good looking, and that includes Eurasians.

@MrGenedancingmachine Nope

lmao what an incel

@Jonah Whale There is a tendency for light skin to correlate with higher castes, but that is not necessarily the case. There are plenty of higher caste people that are darker skinned (esp in South India), and lower caste people that are lighter skinned. This is a very common misconception that people with no understanding of India have. Also, there are plenty of Indians with her skin tone -- she isn't super light at all. It's kind of mind-boggling how little people grasp.
1
@MrGenedancingmachine You stated it.
1
@suvikrams I know, right? I wasn't born or raised in India, and I can tell this guy is talking out of his ass.
1
@MrGenedancingmachine Mm, you don't know my ideology, but nice try anyway.
1
@subPlayer第二主人 そうですよね?このスレッドを立った人は日本男性と日本女性の好みを区別つけないだけ。
1
@MrGenedancingmachine Uh...okay. Your ideology is crazy but at least you're consistent.
1
Like you, you mean?
1
@Jonah Whale Dude, not everyone replying to you in the comment section is Indian. You're being an asshat, and using every rhetorical tactic (hey there, strawman arguments) to deflect from that. Casteism != colorism. Haven't you ever learned that correlation doesn't equal causation? Even if the other people in the thread were Indian, it wouldn't invalidate their thoughts. Also, I see how you jumped from "Indian -> Hindu" there.
1
@Jonah Whale Yup, a white dude telling everyone else he understands more than them about their own countries. No real surprises here.
1
@may The fact that you use "victim awareness" says loads about your mentality. Wake up. It's not normal for little kids to call foreigners animals. Japan needs to change.
1
@travellerk1956 ムンバイの辺りだと…あと、ゴアにもたくさんいる。後者なら大勢のキリスト教の方もいるので、それも理由の一つかもしれない。

Any links?
1
Sorry you had to deal with their shocking racism. Japan is not a healthy place to be for gender or racial concerns.
1
@Richard Very true. I think that people who are fluent in Japanese and have been here a while should be interviewed more often than newbies. They usually have more insightful things to say.
1
chuddus incelvs lmao internet troll
1
Actually, diversity has more net positives than homogeneity from a logical standpoint.
1
@cosmo9390 It's all related to global imperialism and power.
1
He was really cute and likable!
1
@VidhyaGawali You're LARPing.
1
Uh, they don't hate Indians...
1
This is an interesting comment! A good number of Japanese people will superficially accept you if you are fluent in Japanese, but that also includes assimilating to their norms 100%. If you don't, you're seen as a pest.
1
Do not use that word. Under ANY circumstances.
