For your statement to be true society, which tends to desire religion, would have to be in constant conflict with authority constantly and universally and nothing is further from the truth. The answer why can be found in Psychology. All healthy respect for authority is dependent upon a healthy relationship at childhood with one's father. Dad establishes healthy respect for authority by being an authority over the household mom establishes healthy relationships between just people in general. In other words, it's a scientically proven fact that if you can't establish a healthy relationship even with friends or you cannot respect authority it's a good indicator something went wrong during childhood between mom and dad and you. What does this have to do with religion, or Christianity for that matter? Easy exodus 20:12 honor your father and mother. In fact the 10 commandments even Exodus through Deuteronomy establishes healthy relationship between people, society, family, law, and authority. So if religion is in constant conflict with authority then what's this doing in the Bible? Let me propose an alternative it's the opposite that's true in the case of China. It's authority creating conflict with religion? Why? What's the motive? Because Christianity is not a religion the CCP can control and it has this really bad habit, I suppose you can say, of creating perfectly content people who are arguably more moral due to a diety that is beyond the party's sphere of influence. And that is something the CCP chooses not to allow and is threatened by.

It seems to me that if a government is leading you "hellward", as you put it, then it is your duty and responsibility to act regardless of who you are.

General George Washington once stated that what separates the Christian from all other peoples is that he would rather die on his feet then live on his knees. In case you are thinking it's because we fight or make wars or whatever the counter argument may be, no, it's actually because we know heaven awaits us when we die. If someone handed you a fully paid ticket to Hawaii, or whatever your dream vacation is or the place you want to retire to or whatever just the place you feel the happiest, with hotel and everything do you honestly think threats and intimidation, or actual violence is going to bother you? Thats just a place on Earth now imagine the promise of heaven. The Bible repeatedly teaches us to not be afraid. If persecuted pray for our persecutors and if we are put on trial use it as an opportunity to preach God's true message but when it comes to death do not fear. That's what George Washington is really describing about Christians. You can intimidate us, you can threaten us, you can even kill us, but we have nothing to be afraid of because we know where we will be. If you want to correct that with belief, fine makes no difference to me that's still our attitude. Doesn't it ever strike you as odd that Christian history is filled with martyrs so willing to go to their deaths for their beliefs? And I don't mean in battle although that has happened too, I mean being executed for their beliefs.
