Yeah, it's much easier in hindsight from behind a keyboard. People don't understand that the officer was being shot at in the moment and doesn't have the luxury to decide if he has the ability to shoot again or if he is going to drive stun the officer after it was deployed.
22
He stole his partners firearm and fired it at the officers. That isn't unarmed.
19
Well, he did have one firearm, which did make a popping sound and a flash, which perhaps he reacted to that. Some advice to criminals, don't show that you're violent, steal a firearm and incapacitate one officer with it and then try to do the same to the other officer. The officer deserves to go home at the end of his shift. If he was taken out, he could have been killed.
15
@vaishakhvinod6693 A taser is a firearm.
10
Right. Imagine if an officer let someone go home drunk and he ended up killing a family of 4. I am curious to what people would say about the police then.
9
@handoffate7262 He could have spent the night in jail if he didn't fight the officers, steal and fire the officer's firearm at both of them.
6
He didn't deserve to die for that, but the fault was his own. The officer doesn't deserve to risk his life over someone who has already taken down one officer with a taser and is trying to do the same with this officer. What happens if he incapacitates this officer? We know this man doesn't have an issue fighting or taking an officer's weapon. If he takes his gun, it is all over.
5
He fired a weapon at the officer so he gets taken out.
5
@kopikoblanca987 Yes. If a taser isn't used correctly, it is a deadly weapon. I don't expect a violent drunk felon to use it correctly. Just a few weeks before this incident, a cop unlawfully used his taser and the city stated that was deadly force. They can't have it both ways.
5
Well, everyone was nice until he attacked the officers, took their firearm and fired it at both officers. There's no way they were going to just let him walk home drunk though. For one, he doesn't know where he is. He knows that he was at a Wendy's but he thought he was at another location. Two, he is a violent felon on probation who violated his probation by committing a crime.
5
"If he escaped you need to use a taser not a gun" The officer did use his taser, but it didn't work. The other officer couldn't taser this man, because this man fought him, took his taser and used it on him. IF anyone shoots a taser at someone unlawfully, they should be shot.
4
@d1one463 Yes, and that's his fault, not the officers'. If he wants to get drunk he should stay at home and give someone his keys.
4
@d1one463 If he didn't fire weapons at the officers, he would be alive right now.
4
A violent drunk and drugged felon fires a weapon at officers who defend themselves.
4
It's not. He fired a weapon at the officers and they defended themselves lawfully.
4
@babsayinke9720 Which he fired at the officers. What part of my statement was a lie?
4
@babsayinke9720 That's sort of a misleading question. He wasn't shot for holding a taser. He was shot because Brooks was firing it at the officers. A taser in the hands of a criminal is deadly force under Georgia law. The officer has the right to defend himself.
4
@stephenmartinez1 Okay, well if someone doesn't want to "bend over" for these officers, then they should consider not committing crimes.
4
@inspires7324 He didn't fabricate a weapon, he stole it from the officer. They knew he had a weapon, but maybe not which weapons. He fired the firearm (taser) at both officers, he was a threat and armed.
4
Not dreadful enough to not drink and drive though. What countries would help get someone home who was caught driving drunk? I mean, that happens on a case by case basis in the US as well, but are you stating that this is the norm in certain countries? That someone could be a violent felon on probation, they could drive drunk and the cops will just drive them home?
4
@vaishakhvinod6693 Your opinion is not based on law and is wrong.
4
You act as if the police escalated this. They didn't. They were doing this correctly. The man became violent, punched them, tasers one officer and then tried to do the same to the other. I don't want to see anyone die, but if there's a choice to be made, I will error on the side of the officers who were doing their job properly.
3
Nice until he becomes violent.
3
Don't fight police officers, steal and use one of their firearms (Taser) against both of them, and you should be fine.
3
Agreed. Adrenaline is going, and he's fighting for his life.
3
@alinoo1 Well, a general rule of life should be, don't taser one officer, hit an officer, then fire a taser towards the other officer. We know that the man was violent, if he had taken the officer out, that could have been the end of his life.
3
Brooks used deadly force, the officer has the right to defend himself from the violent felon.
3
Considering that he didn't know where he was, that he thought he was at another address, it would have been hard for him to get home. Then what happens if he walks into traffic and causes other people to die. Now, let's say that did happen (it is hypothetical, I know). If that happened, and we had no knowledge of what happened here. All we would know is that the police let a drunk man walk down a road, causing death to him and others. There is no way that plays out well for the cops. In hindsight, it is a lot easier to criticize.
3
Running away, of course not. Firing a stolen police issued firearm while running away? It is justified.
3
They were incredibly patient with this person. They didn't need to escalate anything to take him to jail. He is drunk and was driving his vehicle. He is going to be taken to jail, even if it is just to sober up and be released in the morning.
3
Sure, discriminate against a person doing their job just because there are other bad officers. I find it interesting that every time people make the argument, they leave out the fact that Brooks used deadly force on the officers. I find it incredible that anyone would expect not to be shot when they fire a weapon at an officer.
3
It is even easier to just not drink and drive, then no one gets hurt and no one has to go to jail.
3
@nevinkuser9892 The officer helped it's citizens here too by removing a violent drunk driver from the road.
3
Once Brooks fired a weapon at the officers, that is when it was over for him.
3
He drove drunk, he isn't going home. He doesn't even know where he is.
3
Agreed. It's dumb and gets you killed. Or better yet, if you're a violent felon on probation, maybe don't do drugs and get drunk with access to your keys.
3
Fire a weapon at an officer, expect to be shot.
3
What did the police do wrong here?
2
He is a violent felon who commits crimes against his family. He shouldn't be brought home to his family while drunk. That's not fair to his family. He was going to prison for a while.
2
@notbradpitt2802 They checked him for weapons, sure, but that was before he fought the officers and took at least one of their firearms (taser). While I can't say that he was or wasn't a threat to the civilians, he used deadly force against the officers.
2
@cristopstv599 How would you have caught the guy if you were the officer?
2
If someone is driving drunk and on drugs, it is NOT the responsibility of a cashier to go startle them into waking up. We don't want drunk drivers to continue driving, we want them off of the road. Sure, we don't want them dead either, but that is the fault of the violent felon on probation who fought the officers, stole their firearm (taser) and fired it at them.
2
Police: If a violent criminal shoots at us with a weapon shoot.
2
He was driving drunk before this happened, but that's not why he was shot. He fired a police issued firearm at the officers.
2
@skelo9033 He was caught operating a vehicle drunk. He passed out while driving and then drove the car into a parking spot. He 100% drove drunk, and that is on camera. Driving drunk in the parking lot is illegal in itself. Also a reasonable person would believe that he drove there drunk. It is highly unlikely that he drove to the parking lot and started drinking and doing drugs and immediately passes out.
2
He acted in self defense after Brooks used deadly force, so it's good that he got his back pay.
2
Well, if he was parked in a parking spot then he had a lot better chance to be left alone. In Georgia, it isn't a crime to be drunk in the driver seat since the vehicle isn't moving. However, he was in a driving lane, so the cops had probable cause that he was driving drunk. They can't let him walk home drunk though as that is illegal.
2
Kyle received justice today.
2
@hallodunase Yes, ignore that the man punched them, fought them, took their firearm (taser) and tried to take the officer down, which would make the officer incapable of defending himself against the man.
2
@duffer2307 Anyone who fights an officer, steals their firearm and shoots it at an officer should be shot. This man wasn't wrongly accused, he was clearly drinking and driving and he had drugs in his system, he fought both officers, shot a taser at one, ran and then shot it at the other officer. If I did that, I would fully expect to be shot. That is endangering the officer's life.
