Of course if the authorities had been doing their jobs in the first place (its illegal to block roads) instead of selectively enforcing the law, none of these confrontations would have happened. Two lives wouldn't have ended and their families' lives destroyed. This was disaster waiting to happen - which, of course, is probably what the authorities wanted.

Ladies and gentlemen: let's take this moment to offer our condolences to all mainstream media outlets who did everything they could to make sure that this lockdown would last forever. Their persistence should be remembered by all of us.

I remember when the Independent was a genuine newspaper deserving of the title: I used to buy it. Seeing what its become is a real shame.

I really miss the days when I could trust the veracity of a claim made by our media. I doubly miss the days when I wouldn't wonder if he had annoyed his colleagues in Westminster and that this was their reply.
76
I remember the days when the Independent really did earn its name. I used to buy it then.
57
Apparently E-bikes and E-Cars are almost impossible to put out when they catch fire.....I wonder how much pollution that causes.
48
The protest was supposed to be in Stephen's Green (the large park nearby) but the police closed down access to the Green and prevented anyone from entering. They attempted to shut down a peaceful protest in a large green.
39
Once upon a time the Independent was a paper of quality that always questioned the narrative of the political class.
34
I see these types walking around with bull terriers all the time that they are barely able to control.
25
I believe him. When have politicians, especially this generation, ever lied to us?
23
This is more in keeping with the calibre of journalism I used to expect and respect from the Independent. I'm hoping to see more of this: after all this is just the tip of the iceberg as far as that ideology in Ukraine is concerned.
22
It is NOT a ban! The Supreme Court has simply ruled that from now on states make their own decisions about abortion.
21
Yeah. I remember Julian Assange being hit with exactly the same accusations because the state didn't like his journalism work. Recently this MP spoke out against war crimes being perpetrated against the Palestinians. Amazing coincidence.
19
The last 2 years (govt reaction to covid, followed by the economic war this govt waged over Ukraine) has caused this mess: Liz truss is only one of the people to be blamed. Last May Russia and Ukraine were ready to negotiate a settlement when boris suddenly flew over there and warned Zelensky not to agree to ANY peace deal - then handed Zelenksy 40bn (edit: sorry 35million - it was US Congress gave them 40bn) while families over here suffered.
18
I remember the days when The Independent was worthy of that name.
16
Living in a free country, that our grandparents sacrificed everything for - we can do what we want. And what a shame it is to see a newspaper I once respected slide into the gutter and act like nothing more than a messenger for the state.
15
Exactly. No control whatsoever. I see a lot of these people going around in London with bull terriers and they do keep them as intimidation pets and they have no control over them.
15
I remember the days when the Independent was a credit to its name and a credit to journalism: always objective and careful in its reporting: now reduced to nothing more than a lying gossip rag.
14
LOL! Your comment made me laugh out loud. Excellent point.
14
Nice little club to be in.
13
Yep - and all over a virus that has a 99.7% recovery: the media has played a massive part in this insanity.
13
The're not bots: they're pointing out the hypocrisy of our press - and they're right.
11
A politician resigning over a seriously negligent decision that damaged innocent victims. I haven't seen that in a long time - but there again I live in the UK.
11
@trevorio2023 Lol I think his comment sailed over your head somewhat: these screeching SJW harpies who are wailing about a woman's right to choose are the very same ones who were saying a woman can't be defined: he was rightfully pointing out their confusion - and you've just pointed out your's.
11
So there is going to be peace and this has caused a "crisis" for our leaders. Let that sink in.
11
Selected.

My mother died under exactly the same circumstances but the difference is I knew, even back then, that the political class was partying it up and breaking all the rules themselves and I'm frankly amazed that anyone, let alone most of the country, actually believed they were following the rules themselves.
10
Exactly: and being a lawyer, he understands the power of individual words and language: he was deliberately downplaying the murder of those children. Also - the two thugs who attacked police in Manchester airport and broke one WPC's nose haven't even been charged. Two Tier Kier is a remarkably accurate tag.
10
Exactly. In fact he spoke recently about the British government endorsing war crimes that are being perpetrated against the Palestinians.
9
@brandons5426 Covid-19 has a recovery rate of 99.7% - and you already know that politicians are liars but you choose to believe them and their friends on this anyway.
9
My mother was one of those who died in isolation in a nursing home. Up till that point no visitors except by special appointment - only one family member per week for 15 minutes. When she passed we were only allowed to spend 5 minutes with her body, one family member at a time whilst the others had to wait their turn in the car park. All the while that lot were partying it up and laughing at us.
9
Oh no! Now its global freezing! We haven't had snow like this....since the last time we had snow like this.
9
Lol, good one!
8
You probably won't feel anything at all after a while.
7
I remember the Independent was once the only news source that didn't join in with the mob: I even remember the Independent standing almost alone against the WMD claims. How things have changed. I used to buy your publication when you were a newspaper.
7
There is a documentary on youtube called Ukraine On Fire: it tells the real story of what's been happening there. Also - you may want to look into Navalny's background. Its quite an eye opener.
7
@andyharvestedwards I'm afraid its you who is a little short on intelligence. I'm not a tory: I despise the tory government just as much as I despise labour and the lib dems. But you may want to expand your attention span to when Julian Assange was accused of exactly the same thing because of the footage of war crimes he released re: Iraq. Crispin Blunt accused the (tory) government this week of endorsing war crimes in Gaza: within days this accusation was levelled at him. Learn to think instead attempting to insult people who are brighter than you are.
7
Many elderly people died desolate and alone, banned from seeing their loved ones in their final hours because of measures that HE put in place: families have been torn apart and their lives turned upside down, businesses destroyed - while he himself broke every single one of the rules that he has been destroying this country with.
7
@malahammer Now, now Paul - calm down and don't get into such a - lol - furey. But puns aside - Scientists and doctors have been speaking out against these lockdowns and measures, but you have chosen to believe a bunch of career politicians, their friends and MSM instead. Believing politicians and their friends isn't really a very sane thing to do, for someone who likes to use the word 'insanity' without a hint of irony.
7
The emperors with no clothes mock the man with no shirt in a picture. I know who I'm laughing at and it's not Putin.
6
That clown can shove his restrictions up his *rse - if there's any room left up there for another object.
6
Article 6 of UNESCO's Bioethics and Human Rights Act states that it is against International Law to force or coerce anyone into taking a vaccine against their will. If they try it they are open to serious court action and law suits. They'll be stopped. The main thing is people need to start familiarising themselves with their rights and I'm dismayed that the alternative media isn't doing this.
6
A bully accuses a bully of being a bully.
6
Well, the biggest public advocate of the vaccine in Ireland, Dr Luke O'Neill, has refused to take it himself: so I think you may need to stop banging your own head and wonder why that would be.
6
He and labour are finished. The tories are gone, now labour needs to go, too. Independent parties and candidates all the way from here.
6
And the biggest public advocate for the vaccine (Dr Luke O'Neill) has actually refused to take it himself and not one Irish main stream media journalist has called him out on it.
6
Go and see family: these politicians will not be following the rules anyway. Enough of this nonsense.
6
@AmB-mo5wl Don't be such a coward - the government doesn't have the means to enforce it, and I guarantee you they won't be following any of the rules themselves. You can close the door on your own cell if you want, the rest of us won't be. PS police will all be at home with family and friends anyway - but good luck to you in your self imposed prison.
6
They kept their heads down and their moths shut because they are selfish cowards.
6
Yes. We can. We're going back to normal and there's nothing they can do about it. All the covid fines have been thrown out by the courts and even UNESCO's bioethics and human rights act states that it's illegal to try to coerce anyone into taking a vaccine against their will.
