McBeast's description of his lifestyle seems to be one where he'll be more and more isolated as he lives his life. That is a cage that will be harder and harder to escape from as he becomes further and further removed from the rest of us. Even pity for his circumstance won't be sufficient.

It's important for the privileged to understand they have a responsibility to the rest of us. Everyone has a job based on the capacity to get the job done. Even post-docs are privileged despite the struggle they face getting their career on track. The privileged can find a less privileged job if they are unwilling to do due diligence for their responsibilities. The privileged belong in the limelight for the rest of us to keep a close eye on. Far better not to be in the limelight: I don't need 15 minutes of exposure.

Think what your son will think if

down the line your son reads your affirmations.

It's obvious she has the knowledge but, unlike your more experienced guests, she doesn't know how to ask you questions to narrow down to where you want to go. You don't need my advise about choosing guests but I think you know what I'm talking about.

This academic worship of Turing is annoying. Yes, the guy was brilliant but can't we think beyond what Turing can up with?

This is take it on the chin advice but also a way to have a little fun. Briefly, allow yourself the luxury of imagining your critics as uninformed idiots: just to remove the sting. Then be generous. For each critic figure out where the criticism is coming from then, gently show them why they are an ass. Ask Michael: he can tell you how to politely tell someone they are an ass. If you do it right, your critics will thank you for the feedback.and mean it.

It's important to distinguish between weak human being leaders and leaders who are psychopaths. Weak leaders can travel down a slippery slope. Psychopaths have no conscience so need no path to commit evil: just the right emotion is all that's needed. A serious effort to deal with psychopaths early would remove some the evil from this world.

The 'Flynn effect' sounds like a cultural effect. Is it more prevalent in Europe and Asia than in the US?

So, Stalin is anyone without scruples untethered in a political system without controls on use of political power.

She is right. The advances in technology has restored the boundary between the scribe and the peasant. Take a light bulb: currently there is no affordable 3D printer available to create light bulbs when you need them. Destroy all the light bulb factories then what happens?

Did some wiki searching while watching this podcast. Assembly theory is a useful magnet for recently coined phrases. For example: 'circumstellar envelope' a mouthful way of saying stellar halo and my favorite: 'interstellar and circumstellar molecules':which is definitely a mouthful. Alex, you must be in heaven. I agree with most physicist's caution that Star Trek dreams in the coming century is unrealistic. Colonizing our solar system is gonna be the most we can do. It's just as well since we still have plenty of other tasks to accomplish. Star travel can wait: be satisfied with the fictional videos that are yet to come

Anyone who has heard the small voice (different than a conscience) more than once knows that is not a silly machine. Don't worry, the moment after you die (a long time from now) you'll know for sure because there'll be conversation about the meaning of life. David Butler

Ah, stepping around the importance of diversity and how this country has yet to understand how to pop the cork and let the genie out of the bottle. Someone needs to bring the founding father's true intent into 21st century context. I don't have that ability to do that but maybe there is someone who can. Maybe, you could bring that person onto your podcast. David Butler

Question: how does relearning a skill relate to G factor? I use OpenOffice-Draw infrequently: usually years apart. Everytime, I must relearn how to use Draw but I usually relearn the skills quickly. David Butler

I like this guy because he seems well grounded and seems willing to sponsor the best connection with whoever he is in contact with. He is interesting to watch making his explanations in course of a conversation. I suspect you really enjoyed your conversation with him.

Maybe Twitter should have threads similar to an online game has threads. Rather than follow individuals, follow Twitter threads - adding/deleting the threads as you wish. Religious scripture quoting should be an added/deleted thread Twitter threads would enhance free speech in that a Twitter member could choose what gets popped on them.

I prefer open source over MS but never got around to using Linux. There is an Linux app to undo manipulations that MS puts into Windows.

About seeking wisdom without using organized religion or a comparable compendium of 'assembled wisdom': assemble your compendium of all the limits of what it means to be a human being then examine all that we know and describe it in terms that a human being can understand. Actually, much easier to sift thru existing compendiums pulling out the wisdom you prefer. If you get my point.

A good place for a freshly minted coder is work in a game studio interested in creating simulation games.

Can electric rockets be used to travel to/from Lagrange 2 so that the Webb telescope be serviced. Despite what NASA says about servicing, it'd be dumb not to be able to service the Webb - it's ROI issue.

The most dangerous people to an authority's rule are those are those who benefit from the authority's rule because they are the potential enemies from within. Witness Stalin.

Thinking of the future rockets that'll make Starship look small, I wonder how electric engines will look like in those rockets: especially the fuel handling.

I suspect that $10,000 poll would have a different result if the participants agreed to be one of the potential victims.

About being mean to celebrities like Joe Rogan: being a public figure leaves you open to the occasional thrown pies and the like. I think Brian Greene is a bit arrogant so my podcast comments are sometimes unkind but it's a balance to the adoring comments he usually receives. Who am I to rate someone else's genuine thoughts? For that reason , I don't need to be on the limelight: it's better to stay out of the limelight.

Until there a better understanding what space is AND physicists continue to mimic Einstein in saying Space/Time then it's not clear whether time is fundamental or emergent.

About the mystery of the IQ scores drifting upward: you are only witnessing one capacity undergoing change without checking whether the other capacities are also changing. This is the problem with your formulaic measure of intellect. Again, another forest vs trees issue. You need a wider academic consultation approach. Don't worry, other academic specialties are doing the same thing.

Question: what trend in wealth distribution has occurred in the past decade ... where is the concentration of money and where is it not? That will answer a lot of the questions you are asking. David Butler

I disagree about bypassing establishing a Moonbase first on favor of going to Mars sooner. Best to do the easiest first then the harder next. Anarctica then the Moon then Mards then Titan, etc.
1
About the 16‰ IQ 85 or lower: that implies a responsibility a nation has to its population. I doubt that an immediate fix is in the cards. However, a more serious focus on short and long term consequences is a wise objective.
1
The thing about human genetics is that it is the result of the merging of 8 human ancestors so race is an important effect on genetics. Although there is only one human species today, there is a wider genetic diversity than Richard has been willing to acknowledge. Elon's Martian colony is likely to widen human genetics diversity due to radiation effects.

About the 11 and 12 year-olds taking the SATs: the quartiles of the top 1% later years career results could well reflect biases in the career specialty hierarchy rather than individual achievement.
1
I'm wary of proponents of any party line (especially Chinese Communists) because it's another version of the victor rewriting history.
1
Joe Rogan is okay but not really my cup-of-tea. Coffeezilla is on the money about your podcast niche. If you are going to pass the staff in 2023, you should consider the niche your substitute is best for - everyone tends to be different.

Finding single cell life is very likely and probably abundant, however, the search should done very carefully - a NASA approach - the Prometheus approach is the approach of the foolhardy.
