About your frequent question about existing contact by extraterrestrials: studying animal forms of intelligence on our world, prior to actual extraterrestrial contact, is the best strategy to pursue.
1
Lex, in terms of what I understand about your personality, you are far closer to conventional than weird. Witness your preacher attire of black suit, white shirt and black tie which you are obviously comfortable in wearing. I don't remember ever wearing a suit in the last 40 years.
1
"The most important person in the room is the interviewer": hmm, depends on the interviewer ... but, you do alright.
1
I'm not convinced that machines should be babysitting human beings. It strikes me that thinking is similar to choosing representative government because the masses just can't handle real democracy. Considering the number of incompetent leaders this country has had recently: that thinking is arrogant. Just because you are talking about machines doesn't mean that thinking is less arrogant. Being the oldest: all my siblings are younger siblings, though at my age, age differences are insignificant. There is nothing more disturbing than a sibling telling you how much smarter they are than you and you are an idiot. An event not as infrequent as I'd like it to b. Have you read 'Stranger in a strange land'? That was not on your list.

I've spent some time looking at many types of rocket engines when I first investigated SpaceX. This young lady, however technically knowledgeable, is almost speaking gibberish as she describes Ion engines .... Seems almost bored with her own description. I'm sure I'd do worse but ...
1
Your guest needs to work on eye contact. I had that problem when I was her age: she needs to ask herself what's blocking her from making eye contact.
1
I've never liked MS: especially the underhanded way they treat OpenOffice. They luv to crush competitive software. Any Open Source comments are a smokescreen.
1
Sorry Michael, but as a proponent of anarchy, you are not entitled to define joy since you are in a different universe. Joy is a selfless act that you do for another that reflects back on you. Come back to this universe and do that act for Lex and you will discover what joy is.
1
How will Software 2.0 affect MS Office and OpenOffice?
1
How do you expose the true source of financing for politicians? Political mechanisms to expose such funding has failed.
1
Not familiar with the 'Her' movie which, if I'm still alive in a few years, I might see on Hulu. I remember the AI movie of this robot boy who was never accepted by his adoptive mom ... a robot who pines for her even after the human race becomes extinct. That was a movie worth watching. David Butler

A time traveler journeying back a century, who prepared for the difference in cultures, would be more knowledgeable and appear far smarter then than today.

Although there are many who are enchanted by Turning and his machine, I've never been impressed by Turning despite the impact that Turing has had to computer design. I liked the simplicity of the IBM card than the silly paper tape imitation of the Turing machine ... I especially dislike the use of infinity in any theory. Infinity is on the border of human limits lazy and programmers too lazy to put any time into 'useful' UI. You two guests, however, are better than Turning and the lazy ones in our midst. David Butler

About public criticism: consider the 11 year-old, Danny, who took the blame for his dad's murder of Danny's aunt. Leaving Juvie at 16. The plot of the TV series: 'Twisted'.
1
The way for America to deal with China is the same way that that America dealt with the Soviet Union: divide and conquer. That is, find the Chinese localities willing to deal with American localities but lower the national sword expeditions. Let the Chinese communist party trip over itself and have to make deals with it's populations. Don't let the Chinese communist party play one community against another. David Butler

A podcast about arresting criminals is interesting but is about an after the fact fix. Preventing someone from becoming a criminal is a lot harder but a better approach. The question to ask, beyond genetics, is what in society encourages criminality. Anyone can become a criminal. My dad was a cop yet he had criminal thoughts: everyone does.
1
@phoenixfire8226 I'm mostly thinking about broken people like sociopaths rather than criminals. I understand your focus on behavior incentives but prevention also means other kinds of incentives.
1
You want to surrender your human decision making to a machine made by someone else? Better to work out your personal things by yourself excepting sources of advice. David Butler

I guarantee that if you look a millennium into the future

I think the moon is the most convenient platform to build a lot of relatively inexpensive telescopes that can be constructed and maintained by a large moonbase operating similar to The antarctic base. That would be the impetus for creating the Starship version that can take a large number of colonists to/from Mars. I think some wealthy will want something more than a trip around the moon. I think booking time on the moon will become a reality.

I lost my slide rule decades ago. I don't miss it even tho it was important to have one in Boston Latin school.

Wolfram would gain insights if he looked beyond celluar automata: he's done a great job mining that. Plenty of focus on individual human beings from a collective perspective. Not enough focus on the how diversity develops and the ideal ways that diversity can develop. Question: how to re-shape hierarchy to .maximize harmonious contribution of all the human adult population. Especially, early dealing with psychopaths and other broken human beings. David Butler

Just a thought follow-up to my last comment. Consider re-packaging some of your podcasts for local (Austin) consumption with shorter time requirements. Collections on the same theme, say: aliens or history or politics, etc. The idea being to see what works locally that might also work nationally/internationally. If you already have this idea then definitely go with it. David Butler

What would biology engineering theory say about the materialist physics of consciousness theory of a prior podcast guest?
1
There is a 30 year difference in my programming experience and your interviewee. Now I understand how culture filtering works ... I was doing similar things in my time but the culture wasn't ready. There is got to be some way to deal with culture filtering damaging the chances of today's babies. So much waste in this country's way of doing things. David Butler.

Love the change of outfit which is obviously Michael's idea. What is also obvious is that Michael is a true friend who has had a big impact on you and you probably on him. I'm glad you are friends and ignore those who don't get you. Their loss.

Success in life (run the "wonderful life" clip) is creating as much joy as you have the capacity to create.
1
Alex, you are not boring. However, a patterned tie and non black suit would be an interesting novelty.
1
Your guest seems naive about how human beings in a society react to a threat like a pandemic..With the lies from Trump and wary view about about what Fauci was saying, it was hard to believe anything we told. And, it wasn't obvious what to look up on Wikipedia. I know because I tried to figure out what the truth was and I never really discovered the truth until late in the pandemic. David Butler

Sounds like Win-Win's name should be Loki.
1
By aliveness I think he means outside-the-box or self insight which are rare for most people. For me, inspiring joy in another is far more satisfying and there are plenty of opportunity to be in those moments.
1
Skynet looms put on the far reaches of the universe or not.

Ages ago, I read Animal Farm out of curiosity but not knowing the details of Stalin's rule because it wasn't in accessible history books. Read the Nazi book much later again out of couriousity. It's amazing how ignorant my generation was when I was young: in some extent still is.
1
A more likely cause of human extinction is genetics: especially if COVID was released from that Chinese lab.
1
I dislike tests, also ... especially the time limit tests.
1
I agree that violence for political change is not a good idea. Real social change is like a desert becoming a forest with many streams interweaving through that forest.
1
One way to understand God's relationship with human beings is to go back as many millennia as you can then live the lives in each generation that brought human beings to today. See how we human beings changed over the generations and see God's hand in those changes. Of course, you'd need a united book of scripture to see that. Something we currently don't have available to us.
1
My last comment was just an observation how many people focus on the trivial and overlook what is actually more important. I generally keep my opinion about Christmas and Halloween to my self because many might be threatened in some way.
1
The idea of payload cost seems to escape the mind of engineers when seeking to solve defunk satellites in high orbit. Putting parachutes on defunk satellites to bring them down sooner is stupid. Putting the junk in even higher orbit to be harvested as Moon base resources is a better solution. Fewer missions to supply the moon with my idea.

The thing about something you've purchased such as a book is that after you have it is how much time you will to spend before you begin to enjoy having it. If your answer regarding your book, Michael, is instantaneously then my response is "Yeah, right".
1
Alex, good guest choice. However, the Marxist example is too simplistic: the exploitation agency is two fold. Yes, large businesses exploit the employees but the government exploits all the weaker businesses: both the owners and the employees. Where is the guest's plan to deal with all the exploitation? The guest's idea of business democracy really only applies to large businesses. There is also government fascism to smaller businesses.

Current visions of immortality are like desires to go to hell repeating whatever you've ever done over-and-over. Wouldn't wish that on anyone.
1
I agree that AI will be another tool (actually more like jewelry, these days) like a watch. I don't think AI will replace human beings. It's more likely it'll be a tool we tap then something will come along and replace it.
1
There is a lot happening in material sciences these days: especially with various quantum approaches.
1
I really think this podcast is thoughtful and your insertion of thoughts from prior podcasts helped your guest in making this podcast interesting well done.
1
So, this is a 'How to do podcast' type of video? It's fun to watch others (you like) having fun. Chess pales (to me) compared to playing an online game like 'No place like home' 2 years Early Access by Polish rookies. David Butler
1
About AI wisdom: typically tools can, initially, reveal a wisdom that wasn't present in the prior human culture until the human culture is changed. That is likely the impact AI will have. Decades ago, cell phone usage evolved in a similar way.

Never liked Warren Buffett: his reputation always seemed cheesie to me.
