  27. For one thing his criminal conviction was on a state charge, not a federal charge. For another, federally, it is the responsibility of Congress to keep criminals out of federal office. The republicans in the Senate have shirked their responsibility. Imagine if a federal law disqualified persons with a state felony conviction from becoming President. That would be an invitation to any state with a large majority favoring one party to cook up a way to convict a person of another party of a felony in order to keep them out the running. The Senate is supposed to be the protector of the integrity of the federal government by use of its power over impeachment. The weak link is that the people must elect people of integrity to the Senate. Often, they do not.

  34. I blame Bernie Sanders’ supporters for Trump’s election. Here are some objective facts: Turnout in 2016 was low. Trump received fewer popular votes than either of the two preceding Republican candidates for President, yet he won. Why? Because the Democratic vote fell by much more than the Republican vote, which caused some states to switch to Republican. My interpretation (opinion now) is that the low Democratic turnout was largely due to disappointed Sanders supporters who either didn’t understand how bad Trump would be or who believed he couldn’t possibly be elected. I have actually met people who wanted the Republicans to nominate Trump because they thought it would guarantee a Democratic victory. They were wrong and now we are struggling against demagoguery and fascism. The most important thing we can do in this election is to keep both houses of Congress in Democratic hands. I am not optimistic about the outcome.

  40. I wish they wouldn't push that "Kamala is black" angle. It is identity politics. Pandering to racial identity. Whose notion was it that anyone with a drop of African blood (as if there were such I thing) is "black" (they used a different word)? Segregationists from the slavery era, that's who. Why does their standard apply today? Harris' mother is from India and her father is from Jamaica. His heritage was only partly African, so Harris' is less than half. But why does anyone care? To me, she is an educated, articulate, professional (US) American woman. Isn't that enough? I live in Harris' home town, and have followed her entire political career in the local news. She certainly is not "black" in color, and she has never come across as representing "black" culture specifically. Pushing the "black" angle is just politics, and I don't consider it good politics.
