  2. It could be just a matter of tactics. Perhaps Russia does not want to destroy the entire city. Perhaps they think that Kiev will have to surrender in due course. There may be no necessity to capture the city.

This war started, in part, because the US meddled in the internal politics of Ukraine, where we likewise have no business. US policy led to this war and has caused much suffering.

  5. There is no question that the aspirations of Ukraine for NATO membership, and the promotion of such by NATO, were the primary motivating factors for Russia to attack Ukraine. This war was predicted years ago by Prof. Mearsheimer and others. Furthermore, the arming of Ukranians by the west has made the war much worse than it might have been.

Their spokesman said at the outset that Ukraine was not NATO’s problem (correct), then proceeded to pour arms into Ukraine to turn the conflict into a proxy war with Russia, greatly increasing the death and destruction and upsetting the global economy. We have not seen nuclear brinkmanship like this since the Turkish-Cuban Missile Crisis. The West has gone mad.

  13. Russia does not want a long border with NATO. It is clear that the aspirations of Ukranians for NATO membership, together with NATO willingness to entertain the idea, precipitated this crisis. Poor relations between Ukranians and ethnic Russians in the east were also a contributing factor. I said years ago that the West ought to stay entirely out of relations between Russia and Ukraine. They are cousins. Ukraine is in the Russian sphere of influence. Had we told Ukranians long ago that they were on their own and should try to get along with their neighbors, perhaps this war would have been avoided.

It is that the entire plane is lost. That problem could be solved at modest cost. An airliner just needs to broadcast its id, position, velocity, and time every few minutes, by a means which can be received when transmitted over the oceans and in other remote areas, and which cannot be turned off. That would be a modest amount of data, and occasional loss due to interference would not be a critical problem.

Poltava is where the Russian army of Tsar Peter defeated the army of Charles XII of Sweden. Russia has been invaded by many armies: Mongol, Polish, Lithuanian, Swedish, French, German.
