He is cherry picking. I have old pocket watch from Soviet Union which lasted longer than new from Switzerland. Conclusion? Swiss makes bad watches.
19
He is an economist, he has no clue about such things. Just look at his writing about "chemicals in agriculture".
12
@EconLessons you think there is no poor quality built in US? That is called cherry picking.
12
You really believe that multi storey buildings don't have water, electricity etc?
9
For Europeans and Americans: expensive. For poorer countries word "painful" is severe understatement. But looking at Gaza, starving Muslims, including children, is no problem for "noble and virtuous liberal democracies" so I guess that 50-100 times more people wouldn't be the problem either.
6
@justinwolf7490 there was no Ukraine before 1991.
6
And ballistic missiles too. And working fast neutron reactor, unlike France, UK, Germany or US.
6
US imports 1/3 or oil despite "we have our own oil and we are the largest producer" mantra.
6
@Adi-bo5do Boeing.😂
5
@nicolasolton imports around 1/3 of oil too. Not all crude oils are created equal.
5
You just told us that you don't read modern Russian literature. That is not Russia's fault.
4
@yagi3925 meanwhile, the best armored NATO tanks were blown up. You should stop projecting. I never thought that Russia (or Putin) are "superman". That is your own thing about superheros. But I know that there were hits in Kiev (according to Western oriented media). I wonder: what were Patriots doing? Or Odessa, for such superior system like Patriot there are too many hits. By the way, S-125 landed superior F-117. You can come and visit Belgrade and see leftovers of it in military museum. Don't be afraid, it can't bite you.
3
Nothing from most other Western countries too. Have you ever bought German tooling machines? Of course not, they are not consumer goods.
3
People are too focused on consumer goods.Significant amount of products coming from China was built thanks to German tooling. Can you find that on labels? Of course not. Just (too) many like people think that gas is for heating homes and ignore gas as a raw material and gas as energy source in energy heavy industries.
3
@rv2167 you say that cities have metro, but don't have water and electricity?
3
US education didn't need to collapse.
2
I still have grandpa's pocket watch. I don't know when he bought it, but he died in car crash over 50 years ago.
2
@ernst... There was a country Czechoslovakia. Ever heard about it? Slovenia was part of socialist Yugoslavia, before that Kingdom of Yugoslavia, before than Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Before that Austrohungarian empire and Italy. But, that begs one simple question with very hard answer: how you define borders of such countries? If you say something simple: "of course, nationalities should have their own countries", but that opens another problem: do minorities in such countries have same rights too? If you want another simple rule like "no, borders can't be changed", than these countries wouldn't exist in their current forms. Is there Basque country in Europe? Why not?
2
US is big producer of troubles for whole world.
2
Not just that, but US can't produce one type of fuel so it must be imported for Russia. Nobody wants to venture to project to build such facility because there are no guarantees that in few years US will not resume import from Russia.
2
Communism is actually German product.
2
You can't stream wheat so it doesn't count by service oriented "economists".
2
@MrDosonhai actually, it is very easy to find exactly the same model on auctions on local websites, some even on Etsy. In working condition. You could check that easily yourself, if you knew how to use google. And no, not all Swiss watches are that great. Not to mention that you obviously lack basic scientific training: of course that all watches which survived long enough are of better quality and that says nothing about overall quality of particular batch/model/brand/Soviet Union.
2
Sounds like US.
2
@planetmikusha5898 that explains why liberal democracies have shrinking middle class.
2
@lg2058 I saw russophobia and "immense depth" in cherry picking.
2
@hattifattener1 and lots of "Western" components are made in Taiwan or China.
2
@ADadSupreme but worlds wants blockbuster movies, Kardashians and similar "goodies". Okay, that is the sign of quality.
2
@zulubeatz1 Boeing falling because Boeing management outsourced writing control software to undergrads. Ignoring bad design of aircraft.
1
Do you have something from UK? France? Spain? Italy? Wait, Italy, kingdom of coffee machines. And mafia. That's all.
1
@aziggy252 so, wine from Spain is big deal, but wheat from Russia is not? Okay.
1
@aziggy252 Russian wheat doesn't exist?
1
How Soviet Union extracted all that? Do you have any idea when Germany opened for oil and gas "from the East"? At least roughly, without googling? Was it before Angela Merkel or it began when she was in power?
1
I agree with you, but your 2nd point rules out US too, while 1st is questionable.
1
@5ufo just like racism will be core Western value.
1
@5ufo yeah, right. Calling other nationality "orcs" or similar is not racist.
1
@EconLessons yes, small tools are hallmark and benchmark for steel quality.
1
Ah, the sick(le) "professor" strikes again.
1
@wendelltroyer fertilizers work.
1
That would be too fair and too bad for his story. If he was serious economist, he would know that both Japan and Germany were hallmarks of poor quality in one period of time. "Made in Germany" used to be as "Made in China", cheap and shoddy.
1
@RZakelis no, it is Сказ об Урале, at least that is written on the back.
1
@RZakelis I saw many such watches on domestic auction site and Etsy. I guess they were affordable for people in Yugoslavia because there is number of them in circulation. Quality - no idea, if it works after 50 years, good enough for me.
1
@weblitera Danguolė Rasalaitė? Human trafficking and sex slavery in Sweden - liberal democracy.
1
@justinwolf7490 but you can attack sovereign nations because you make up some reason. That is, from what I saw, democratic way. Thus, this is all about democratization of Russia.
1
@RZakelis that is well know fact. Is there anything which says that capital has to stay the same for millenia?
1
@RZakelis you can say that for any other country.
1
@ernst... in other words, there is no consistent criteria: some people are given right for self determination on one territory and some other people are forbidden same right on same territory.
1
@ernst... you missed the point that Ukraine was overly Ukrainian, but East of Ukraine wasn't Ukrainian in sense of "Euro Maidan Ukrainian". Beside, Odessa was Russian city, built by Russia.
1
@RZakelis okay, I should take your word for that.
1
@ernst... IRA wanted to free Northern Island too. I wonder why city in Western Ukraine have alternate Polish names.
