With all the emission and import taxes, in my country it will likely be more expensive than a Ferrari.
1
I recall Doug mentioning for the Maserati Levante that excessively showing the brand name and Logo in the Interior was a sign that they try to sell you an expensive car for it's brand and not for it's quality. Shouldn't this also be the case for this car based on what you are pointing out at 6:50?
1
Can you point out at what moment you see people sifting trough garbage?
1
I think those are construction workers :-)
1
In my country there is a law where you get a special tax break for cars that are 15 years and older. Making some luxury cars like a 2006 S-Class or first generation Bentley Continental seriously worth your consideration.
1
@haggard1378 Extra care as in, you need to be a professional mechanic to be able to drive a car like this often. And even then, some parts will likely be hard or impossible to find. Although 3D printing might fix that issue in the near future.
1
@doggSMK and every option listed in this video is still in working condition? :-p
1
I watched this at twice the normal speed and it was still painstakingly slow to watch!
1
One thing should be said about the interior; the first and second generation A-Class were more closely related to the Mercedes-Benz Commercial vehicles than their luxury cars. That's why the interior looks more crappy compared to a C-Class from this era, but if you compare it to a Sprinter it looks more similar.
1
It's not a bad car, it's just that I wouldn't buy a Chevy/Opel al that price.
1
@rahimi4762 I have, and I don't really like the Polestar 2. But I do like how the XC60 and XC70 can be bought as electric and hybrid so if I would get one of those, you wouldn't immediately see that I have an electric car.
1
A 15 year old high middle class car as an Uber Black limousine is kind of a rip off though. I would complain if someone shows up in that and I'm paying more than I would pay for a standard taxi.
1
@arthemis1039 Yeah, if you ordered a taxi. Almost all taxi's I have saved in my phone are older S-Classes for that reason. However, when we are talking about luxury transportation, I would say a young (<5 years old) Mercedes E-Class or similar should be the minimum standard.
1
That screen in the dashboard for the front passenger, it seems so useless and something that will probably break or look dated in a couple of years. I nice piece of wood would have made much more sense! Or a display as in the Rolls Royce Phantom.
1
@iPhoneAppReviewer That highly depends, there are also Maybachs with low millage for sale that still cost almost as much as their original sticker price. Apparently there is a select group of oligarchs and other billionaires that really like the Maybach and are willing to pay good money for a fresh model.
1
Probably going to be Hoovies next project!
1
@iPhoneAppReviewer I cannot find any prime models on sale right now, but I recall having seen one at car link not that long ago that was for sale at 300K or so and this was the explanation the sales person gave me for the insane price
1
It is still an Aston Martin and for that reason it will probably never really go lower than 30K unless it has severe damage. But I can definitely see this car depreciate fast. Maybe Hoovie will have this in his garage 5 years from now?
1
I see two major risk factor for car enthousiasts in the future; emission laws and maintainability. I fear emission laws will slowly kill off the gas car in the future and that will also become the case for classic cars. Even if they are not outright banned, what if the infrastructure like gasstations disappears? Further more, especially for more modern cars; they are becoming increasingly complex with more components. Especially with a lot of electronic components and software that might get outdated or lack support in the future. Hoovies Garage has given some attention to this topic already; many 5-10 year old luxury cars today are already becoming too expensive or unpractical to maintain today. So I doubt if in 2040, one of us would even be able to own an old Tesla Model S or Porsche Taycan as a hobby car.
1
Doesn't seem to be the case though. For what I can find, most models are between 30K and 50K. With the most expensive one being a 90K '09 facelift Long Wheelbase model with Mulliner package. Some of the models I see for sale have been offered for over 2 years now. Demand for these cars is obviously not high and they are a far stretch from becoming a desired classic (although I like the design). A coworker of me has actually had an Arnage for a brief period, and he described that he almost went bankrupt on the Maintenance this car needed and quickly sold it at a loss.
1
Here in Europe you won't be able to buy a non electric car anymore in 13 years and I am sure within a similar timespan non electric cars will be banned from most cities.
1
Do a new video by the end of this year to see which of these cars actually came to market!
1
Why is Doug so positive about this car but so negatie about the Levante? They are basically the same car! Why not point out the same flaws in the Levante, in the Stelvio?
1
Preview of the soon to be replaced Aventador? 2022 here, still no sign of the Aventador being replaced any time soon...
1
Cool, first time I see a Dutch car on this channel
1
I love how in the United States a massive car like a CLS or E-Class is considered "midsize".
1
We are living in the middle of a pandemic, all governments have urged people not to travel unless it is absolutely necessary and yet I see countless car vloggers/youtubers flying around the country and even planet to film and drive cars... I love these channels but I do find this worth noting.
1
Nice, my father actually had that car when it was new. And several versions of the A-Class that followed. When Mercedes started making the hatchback A-Class, he switched to a BMW 1 Serie.
1
The middle console reminds me a lot of the first generation Lamborghini Galardo
1
With regards to the Carrera GT being "low profile", I recall seeing one irl for the first time; Parket near some road works at an empty street in a small village. Despite being a car enthousiast, I honestly thought it was a Boxster. It's just so much smaller than I thought this car would be honestly.
1
I mean, the camera could have had an upgrade, but for the map software; why invest in that when everybody just uses Apple Carplay these days?
1
I am surprised that possibly the most expensive Mercedes of 2017 still has the old Mercedes key.
1
They are both listed companies, but own a significant stake in each other. Volkswagen is however much larger than Porsche.
1
@dt_mag I recently had the same revelation; I thought to have read somewhere that Doug was early 40's until I recently watched the Veyron video and he talked about how that came out while he was in high school and I was like "that doesn't seem right?".
1
@ yeah, so no large SUV for starters. A slightly used hatchback would be a better option. A Volkswagen UP!, a Polo, or if you feel like splurging; a Golf would be more than sufficient for a young driver.
1
am I the only one who noticed the water from the tap was pink?
1
It also makes a difference what kind of luxury car you take; American cars don't cost shit in the United States and part prices reflect that. So if you are in doubt between a Porsche 911 or a Ford Mustang, know that the Mustang is much friendlier as an occasion.
1
@MauriceBln1 but the oil change costs 200 dollars/euro’s while you can probably get your mustang fixed at a cheap garage franchise.
1
@mihali9655 Already or coming up?
1
I do personally always recommend a manual car as your first car. I think that if your very first car is already an automatic transmission, you will definitely unlearn how to drive a manual car. Might be less of an issue in America than in Europe. And I do agree that going forward with EV's, manual cars will be less common, but I do think you are opting out of a learning opportunity if you don't.
1
They are probably the same car yes, I see more similarities (infotainment system, center console). Personally, I think the Stelvio would be the better deal here. I think this car just looks too plain to be a Maserati.
1
Most of what Doug's saying isn't true for Europe. It's a fairly simple vehicle without too many modern stuff that can break. And what can break is easy to replace (if you have a bit of mechanical experience you can probably fix a lot of stuff yourself even). In Europe at least, parts are plentiful and easy to find. Also a used Defender can still be bought for under 10K, although I must admit that this was significantly less not that long ago. I do fully agree with the driving experience. In the end it's a very utilitarian vehicle. You drive it because you want to cross the African savanna's or simply because you live on a farm! It makes no sense to have this car when you live in a wealthy suburb.
1
@remasher here is Youtube and viewers of this channel are from all over the world so it's good to know that what Doug is saying is not universally true.
1
They made nice cars, but Spyker Cars failed miserably as a business. They burned trough money at a rate almost as alarming as Elon Musk is doing with Tesla. They had a Formula 1 and Le Mans racing team ow and their net loss was a bigger number than their revenue. They made more money off merchandise than car sales.
1
About the keypad; it's actually an old option from back when keyless entry wasn't a custom thing. Many old Lincolns have this option.
1
I'm European so the keypad thing is not as common to me as it might be to you :P I remember it from the only time I ever visited the US in 2008. I pointed it out and people told me that it was actually an old fashioned thing.
1
Tilburg!!!
1
Doug's video's are becoming advertisements for upcoming auctions on Cars & Bits and it's effecting the neutrality of his reviews. There is no way the old Doug wouldn't have shredded this car to pieces for being impossible to drive.
1
@frippesfrilla7592 Netherlands, every new car here has one or two. Usually located in the drivers footwell
1
1/10 for acceleration is a bit harsh don't you think? 0-60 in 8 seconds is comparable to what my modern compact SUV does. I find that very impressive for a 70 year old car with no turbo's.
