  7. Cars take away your freedom by being your only option, whereas better built city’s you could choose between cars, public transit, walking, biking, or a mix of them.

  10. Cars save space for green? 🤣 Cars need roads, highways, and parking lots that take up huge amounts of space in cites, reducing space for homes, businesses, and even parks. In fact the reduced space cars induce combined with their high infrastructure cost is bankrupting cites and constant trillions in tax payer money. Plus car emission literally kill trees lol I’d your city is soul depressing it is because it was not built right, Likely due to the need for them to accommodate so many cars.

  12. Suburbs are heavily subsidized by federal grants, if you actually had to pay for your own infrastructure then you probably wouldn’t be able to afford to live in a suburb. Also street parking isn’t a problem if you have dense neighborhoods that can actually support public transit. Saving lots of space and money

  13.  @johndone8045  and where does the government get their tax money from? Suburbs are a drain on society, taking money away from things it would be better spent on. You can always go live out in the country off grid, cities are for people, if you don’t like people then cities are not for you.

  14.  @johndone8045  suburbs being great at spreading people out ends up being the main problem actually, due to the previously mentioned more infrastructure needed for the far apart homes, and less families paying taxes to maintain it. If you wish to live spread far apart form everyone, then don’t live in a city.

  16. Good luck standing alone when society ceases to be so safe and comfortable (which historically it will). Collaboration is one of humanities biggest strengths, if you did not know and communicate with your neighbors it is a failure of your social skills, or possibly everyone’s social skills, not dense housing which is sustainable unlike single family homes. The solution is to get out of your comfort zone and talk to strangers/make new friends, also better city design as our current cities are just as bad as suburbs really, I don’t blame you for not wanting to live there right now, but suburbs and walling yourself off from community is not the answer.

  19. How naive, if your going to have opinions on the subjects you don’t know about then please don’t spread them to others. Public transport is actually cheaper than everyone owning and maintaining their own car, plus massive road infrastructure costs. As Puroo pointed out, your cities crime problem is largely due to poor city design, which would be fixed by reducing cars and fixing them unlicensed transport. Also wouldn’t it be much easier to get home drunk if you could take a train? Cheaper, faster, and saver than a taxi.

Nowhere in this video does he talk about banning cars from existing, instead he talks about ensuring cars are where cars need to be, so people can be where people need to be. I can’t live without a car in America, I have no other options to get anywhere, even a simple store trip takes 20 min of driving to get to at least, so much for land of the “free”

  25. We need to take away responsibility from private property developers, not give them more. You can never trust someone who’s goal is profiting to do things in the best interest of the community. I don’t think anything inside city limits should be private development, it’s a space shared by everyone and so should be run by everyone.

We all need cars because our cites were influenced by car manufacturers to be designed to require them, if we change this and instead build public transport, waking/biking paths, and even better roads for cars. We would not be reliant on them anymore. But in order to do this we have to start by reducing car dependency by restricting where they can go, inducing demand for more sustainable modes of transport that are less reliant on greedy corporations.

  31. That all sounds good, but have you seen Russias train routes? Bigger than the US and more developed. Also high speed electric rail would greatly improve travel times across country. And they could have sleeper trains so you go to sleep and wake up where you wanted to go. I tried these in Thailand and it’s the only way to travel long distances now.

Look to your government if you want trains, too bad ours has been bribed and is so weak that our public projects can be interfered with by private entities. Example California HSR

The reason cars got so popular is because car manufacturers lobbied and used propaganda to make people think they were necessary, and for cites to be destroyed to accommodate them, they were just as forced onto people as the examples you used, a good example is when they lobbied to make “jaywalking” illegal because their cars were killing too many pedestrians, which of course was enforced with fines. Cars also don’t represent freedom, in America I am forced to use my car if I want to go anywhere, the closet decent grocery store is a 20 min drive, I have no freedom of choice to choose walking, biking, train, or car, that choice was made for me long ago and now I am a prisoner of car manufacturers, and oil companies.

You didn’t really touch on the most important argument against single family zoning, which is that suburbs are currently heavily subsidized by federal grants to build and maintain the infrastructure, if people actually had to foot the bill for their own infrastructure, then most people living in the suburbs now wouldn’t be able to afford to stay. Denser housing has less infrastructure that is supporting more people so it’s actually sustainable.

  45.  @missphilosophie  if I chose where I lived I would not be here, people choose what you can afford. And cats are definitely the only option, any other transportation either doesn’t exist here, or is too dangerous thanks to cars. Also I need food a lot more often then I need to see extended family, having your basic needs either walking distance just makes sense. There is not a lot of sense to go around these days though.

Except for the fact that suburbs are killing cities by being to low density, and requiring lots of public infrastructure to maintain, ooof If you had to pay for your own roads, power lines, etc you would probably not be able to afford a suburb, right now they are tax subsidized by better performing parts of cities, but that won’t last forever.   49.  @danielkrcmar5395  really? Because it seems to me only spending time with people exactly the same as you leads to closed minded, judgmental, and potentially dangerously ignorant people. While those exposed to a broader set of ideals, though they don’t always agree on everything, find that that are more in common than you would think and learn to coexist. It’s radical, single minded ethnic groups that cause problems by thinking they are superior to others. And the reason humans are historically segregated is because, there were less of them, it took way longer to travel, and typically when a group moved into another group’s territory one wiped the other out. But we are in an age unlike any other so to compare the present to the past in such a direct manner is ILL advised.
