  4. While you are correct about UMG being out for themselves, as far as I'm concerned anything which hurts TikTok is a good thing. TikTok has always been a project of the Chinese Communist Party designed to influence Western, specifically American, culture in a negative way. If this forces UMG to support an alternative to TikTok that is based out of a western democracy than that will be a good thing in the long run.

  5.  @michaelb1761  I'll be honest: every once in a blue moon I'll see an ad that is actually a well made entertaining or funny video and I'll watch it to the end. Think "GEICO Caveman" levels of entertaining. Happens very very rarely, though.

  11. Think about this: imagine you record an original song and post it to youtube. You're not a signed artist on a big label, just a dude or girl in your bedroom having fun. Do you think if an artist on a major record label blatantly steals your song that youtube's bots are going to help you out? I know how I guess that would go.

  12. The thing that kills me about this stuff is that those who create these AI tools actually think they're doing some kind of good for the world. Some of them, anyway, all of them are happy to get paid for doing it, and for the algorithm writers and coders, it is a rush to build a software tool and see it work so well.

  23. I for one do not miss the days of being force fed garbage pop tunes every time I turned on a radio or started my car or switched on a TV or walked into a bar. I am quite happy not to be able to name a single Taylor Swift song, for example, and believe I can live a happy life without it. That's not to say I don't miss good rock radio; I absolutely do miss it. MTV not so much.

  25. I grew up with the Cars all over rock radio, and this song was always my favorite. Such a great band. Covering this song is truly fun to play in front of a drunk happy crowd all singing along lol. Also, Ric Ocasek gave all us nerds hope when he managed to marry supermodel Paulina Porizkova. RIP Ric and Ben.

  35. I'm not an Oasis hater, but a woman friend of mine hates them. She says they are a Beatles ripoff, and she certainly noticed the similarity to Lennon's voice, I think it's what she dislikes most about them. It's a shame to dismiss them so quick, they made some really good songs. Ironic thing is, she loves the Smithereens, another band notoriously accused of ripping off the Beatles, so much so they decided to own it by recording a Beatles tribute album lol.

  36. A year or two ago we had "Filter Sweep February" in protest of youtube squashing synthesizer videos which feature a filter sweep that sounds too close to some copyrighted song. Not even a riff or series of notes, just one note with a filter sweep, played by people doing sound demos. Disgusting.

  38. This makes me think of the song Witch Hunt by Rush, on the Moving Pictures album. It's creepy to begin with, but there's this part during the intro where Neil Peart plays this creepy line on what sounds like a xylophone, and then just goes crazy with it, like some poltergeist or demon is playing the instrument and suddenly gets pissed off. I remember listening to that with headphones in the dark and it creeped me out so much my eyes watered up.

  42. You are so right about not playing to a grid. Black Sabbath's last album, 13, had some decent tunes on it and great Iommi and Geezer riffs, but without Bill Ward's swingy drumming and that 70s time feel it was lacking something. Also Rick, you should have a 1-minute spiel about having the tracks that you paste onto the beginning of every one of these vids to shoot down all the questions about it.

  47. If I find out a band I like is using a backing track, I instantly lose a bit of respect for them. Period. Especially if they are faking it and trying to hide that fact. In the case in question, a band that becomes helpless without a laptop holds no interest for me. You have a drum set? Guitars and bass? You mean you can't play anything at all? No backup plan? Seriously? That just comes off as lame to me. Ashlee Simpson had no excuse, either. In her case there was an actual band on stage with her. Call an audible and roll with it. Those guys know how to play, right? You know how to sing, right? It's SNL, you only need to know ONE song to get through to the commercial break, for cryin' out loud, but instead she and her band choked on the goal line and here we are 18 years later still talking about it. If you're a musician, be a freaking musician and remember that all that technology is an addon, not the main show.
