  6. This series is fantastic, so many things about these songs I never noticed before buried in the mixes and compositions. The female vocals on this track are one of those things, now I will never listen to this song again without hearing them.

  7. I always hated that modulation part. Not that this was ever my favorite song to begin with, but that lame key change was such a tired trope in pop rock music and it always felt like the producer or writer didn't know where else to go with the song. An example of a key change that doesn't sound lame to me would be Back on the Chain Gang by The Pretenders, where the modulation happens over an extended held vibrato vocal by Chrissie Hynde that is amazing and makes you not really notice the key change.

  12. Clare Torry did The Great Gig in the Sky in two takes. I would like to see Billie Eilish pull that off and give me something to cheer about. She and other modern singers have lots of talent but I feel this tech is holding them back.

  18. Gimme Shelter is one of the greatest songs in rock and roll history. Sweet Emotion's guitar riff sounds kind of lame without the rest of the band, amazing how a mix changes everything. Paperback Writer's riff is an incredible piece of rock. Love the sound of that Linkin Park and Chevelle stuff. Love the fact that James Hetfield has made this list; underrated rhythm player. Layla starts off as an awesome song, until the vocals and the lame key change, yuck. As for that last, magic 21st sound, LOVE ALEX LIFESON!

I don't think Hetfield gets enough love as a guitarist, it wasn't until I saw him playing his riffs during an interview that I really started paying attention to it and noticed how he plays thrash rhythm parts so tight and makes it look effortless, and of course the riffs he comes up with are almost at Iommi levels of catchy ear candy.

  26. When I see a Beato vid with "rant" in the title I click thumbs up even before the vid starts. I don't even care about U2, aside from a few songs I like, but Rick's strong opinions are always worth a watch.

  27. Love prog-era Genesis. I think that Phil Collins' and the band's huge success with pop tunes in the 80s really obscures how freaking good he really is on drums, plus the fact that he can sing like that while playing, that's Geddy Lee level singer/player skills. Unfortunately everyone just remembers In the Air Tonight, which, while admittedly a cool-sounding drum tune, isn't nearly as badass as his 70s stuff.

  30. What a shame the Pink Floyd are blockers. I learned an awful lot by studying that band's music. My pick for favorite Gilmour solo would probably be Dogs. Not my favorite PF song, maybe, but that solo is crushing. I love how Gilmour is never a shredder, it's all just taking his time and squeezing emotion out of his instrument.

Thinking about it, it's interesting to note that pop/rock originally came from a combination of country and blues back in the 50s, and modern country is once again starting to fill the gap created by the kind of subpar musicality seen in modern pop. A lot of these country songs sound more like pop songs with twang than actual country to me.

  36. I don't necessarily get all the technical recording stuff, but I can listen to a well-played Bonham drum part all day lone, his drum parts are like awesome little songs all by themselves.

  41. I remember as a youngin', listening to the radio in Philly at midnight, Jan 1st, 1984, when the DJ spun up the first two tracks of the new Van Halen album: 1984, followed by Jump. Oh, the buzz that followed in the halls of high schools over the next few weeks, "Did you hear the new VH? What's up with the synths?!" A woman DJ on the radio station, 94.1 WYSP IIRC, she even said out loud on the air, "Congratulations, guys. Now you sound just like everyone else!" Synths on a VH album was a HUGE deal at the time. Fortunately, for those of us who bought the album, it was still a solid heavy guitar rock album. The whole thing with DLR's acrimonious exit afterwards still sucks to this day; the band was at the top of their game when he left.

  42. Led Zeppelin famously got sued for ripping off The Killing Floor by Howlin' Wolf when they released The Lemon Song. I think it's a similar phenomenon: The Lemon Song is fantastic but it never would've existed if they had not lifted it from Wolf. If only they'd have been smart or responsible enough to credit Wolf from the outset.

  46. I saw BoC open up for Rush on the Power Windows tour in 1986, great band and great show. My favorite BoC song is Veteran of the Psychic Wars from the Heavy Metal movie soundtrack. Reaper's a great song, can't believe that SNL skit is over 20 years ago now.
