  5. Yes, hits are a must, because streaming music singles is where the money is at today. Back when album sales made money, it was different, because while a record needs at least one or two hit songs on it, there is room for 4 or 5 songs to take a chance on. Oftentimes they sucked but many of them later became hits. It's almost as if the music business is back in the 1950s when singles were sold on 45 rpm records before LP albums became bigger. But at least the 45s each came with a B side track that didn't have to sound like an instant hit.

  11. You should do a vid like this for best bass albums to get inspiration. I grew up playing bass and didn't really learn how to play guitar at all until I was in my 40s (so yeah, I still suck at guitar), but I can tell you which albums inspired me to play bass. Fragile by Yes, Led Zeppelin II, Powerslave by Iron Maiden, and almost anything ever made by Rush. Geddy Lee is the reason I started playing music. The first song I ever learned end to end on the bass was Distant Early Warning by Rush. In the 80s hair metal era every kid wanted to play guitar or drums, but if you were a half decent bass player you were in high demand. Once I played some Rush in front of my friends while hanging out one day, my name got spread around and I got phone calls from kids I didn't know in other high schools asking me to try out for their bands. Also, before I forget: 1990, so young! ;-)

  17. Not much I can say about how awesome EVH was that hasn't been said. I will say, as a bassist who knows only a bit about guitar, that I did not know about the tempered tuning thing, that's really cool to learn! Back in the 80s playing in bands, usually I would tune my bass to a pitch tone generator at home (it is a stop watch that also makes an electronic tone), and the guitarists would tune to my bass since basses stay in tune longer than guitars. The lead guitarist in my band back then was really talented but I don't remember if he ever tempered his instrument or not, if so he never pointed it out to me.

  23. While it's a decent song as written, I don't like the production, and John's voice sounds weird and perhaps even a bit auto-tuned. If Ringo and Paul are okay with it, than it's okay of course, but just wait until they are out of the picture and watch the record company start mining their old tapes for more money via AI trickery like this.

  25. We just don't see giant rock stars today like we did in the 70s and 80s. There are a small handful of pop superstars, your Beyonces and your Adeles, but pop rock stars? I think the Police would be successful in the sense that they'd have a strong following and an internet presence, but I don't think any rock band gets to be the huge mainstream force they used to become anymore. There are a ton of really good rock bands out there with large fanbases but they will never get radio airplay and they don't make lots of money from music sales anymore. Think of Dead Meadow, Screaming Females, and countless others. You have to be part of their scene or a really big music fan willing to dig around to find out about them.

  31. 90125 is an underrated album. Older prog Yes fans disliked it for obvious reasons and it was never going to be as popular as the fresher 80s acts like Michael Jackson and so on, but if you get past the radio-played-to-death Owner of a Lonely Heart and listen to the deeper cuts like City of Love, Leave It, and Hearts, that album is like a fluffy pink and blue pastel cloud-enshrouded 80s time machine of happiness.

  35. Rickenbacker still matters. For starters, they very aggressively take legal action against clones, and their instruments, especially their basses have a distinctive sound and look cool. Plus, once you get used to their quirks you always want one in your collection.

There's a retired guy named Joe Van Cleave who makes videos about weird photography and typewriter collecting stuff. He doesn't have a schedule; he just does it for fun.   39. Perfect Albums, hmm... Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd; no comment necessary Grace Under Pressure by Rush; every song kills, a complete theme sonically throughout. Not the "favorite" Rush album, but to me the most complete Fragile by Yes (also maybe Close to the Edge); the band had the best lineup and on top of their game Need to think of some others...

Adding guitar is cool, but it doesn't change the fact that these tunes are still utterly predictable, familiar chord progressions we've heard a million times before, and equally telegraphed melodies. Add in the overproduction and the purposely annoying vocals (Probably autotuned to boot) and you've got a nice example of modern pop music's doldrums. If you're going to be that predictable, at least play some old school 12 bar blues. Given how Tool's recent comeback release scored attention with the younger crowd I think there's plenty of untapped demand out there for something different.

  44. This was your first demo? Wow. Compare that to the garbage I've seen bands try to push out there sounds like they used a cellphone in a concrete basement. This is actually good. If you look it up there is a demo Motley Crue made of songs on their first album. It's pretty primitive and garage rock compared to this.

  47. I try not to be a potty mouth on Rick's channel, but this is bullshit. Litigation destroys creativity and makes innovators risk-averse, not just in music but in lots of fields. Lawsuits killed sampling in hip hop, making it financially impossible for a young low-budget artist to do what guys like Chuck D did back in the day. I guess if you're Taylor Swift or Beyoncé you can afford lawyers to fight when your same-as-everyone-else's 4-chord progression lands you in court, but for the little guys out there, tough luck.
