  2. The problem with what Zalensky is asking of NATO would require a rewrite of the charter. That's unlikely. It is diplomatic to show that Ukraine is willing to work for peace while Russia isn't. Regarding troops patrolling a cease fire, there would be the issue of who's paying for it that countries will bicker about even if that solution is cheaper than the war.

  4.  @figleaf8948  no problem. It's Russia that currently controls or occupies Crimea. However, there is a similar principle in Ukraine controlled areas. I have a friend living closer than I'd like to the Zaporizhia area. When there was the fear that Russia was going to sabotage the nuclear power plant, I told her she needed to get away from that area and sent her bus ticket money. When she got to Lviv, near Poland, she said it looked more like Poland than the Ukraine she was used to. I asked for pictures. She explained that she'd try but it wasn't a good idea to take pictures because people become suspicious that she's a spotter relaying target information back to Russia. You might recall that there was a pizza restaurant that Russia hit with 2 missiles. It was frequented by Ukrainian military officers and their families. Whether anyone actually is sending pictures of this or that restaurant or apartment building or if Russia is flinging darts randomly at map, I can't say. However, the Russian missile and drone terror attacks are very real and really stressful since the Shaheed drones are loud and can be heard flying around and the distant booms from missile and drone explosions make sleep difficult (according to my friend who's back in her city closer to the front). So, while Ukraine doesn't mind images of the aftermath getting out so the world can see what Russia is doing, people are wary of anyone taking pictures because of the concern, real or imagined, that it's a Russian spotter and the stress from living with it for 2 years.

Rape was used as a weapon and as a way to create comradery among Russian soldiers participating in gang rape. Civilians were tied up and shot. Those things have occurred everywhere the Russian army has occupied in Ukraine and in previous wars, like Georgia.

As for delivery system, it's been made shockingly clear that Ukraine can reach virtually anywhere in Russia, including Moscow, with weapons delivery systems that could be adapted to deliver a nuclear weapon (the US once tried to develop a plan for soldiers to carry tactical nuclear weapons in backpacks) and Russian air defenses are incapable of stopping such.

If you have a full stockpile, you aren't ordering many and the manufacturer isn't producing at full capacity. Find out what full production capacity is before making timelines. The Stinger missiles that the US is sending to Ukraine were due to be replaced soon anyways. Ie, your statement that they can't be made anymore is silly. They will be replaced with something.

Re, Syrian rebels aren't good dudes Since Assad had indiscriminately dropped some 80,000 barrel bombs and killed 11,000 civilians in just those attacks (plus however many more in other direct operations), Assad seems to be worse until or if the rebels mistreat civilians if they take over the government. Once the Assad military is done, the country may devolve into some civil or multi fractional war. Middle East is as Middle East does.

The Soviet Union fractured and not only was it not the apocalypse, it was beneficial to the world. Secondly, Russia has no succession plan in place. Eventually Putin will succumb to age unless body doubles keep being surgically altered to present "Putin" to the world forever as the doubles are managed from the shadows. Whatever is going to happen when Putin ages out of life, might as well happen now.

Russia has basically been fought to a standstill in Ukraine, after having been pushed out of the Kharkiv and Kherson regions, and now with Ukraine conducting an SMO inside Russia with the stuff NATO isn't using any more.

For at least a month his constant theme has been "what is Ukraine waiting for, why aren't they counterattacking?" (he's obsessed with with Ukraine counterattacking at Bakhmut, which was probably never a planned offensive location). If Ukraine goes on offense before the mud season ends they would make the same mistake Russia did in the initial invasion. Tanks and other off road vehicles would be stuck using roads obvious, easy to predict routes. There's no point in making your first action with new Bradley and Leopard vehicles being to get them stuck in a muddy field (insert photo of Ukrainian farmers retrieving Russian armor from muddy fields with tractors). Plus, if the end of mud season coincides with the return of trained troops and arrival of new armored equipment, attacking before then is like a mechanic going to work with half his tools.

It was attacked. Incidentally, the US just had a freeway overpass bridge collapse due to a fire under the bridge. If they do something Biden can't stomach (and he's a pussy, was against the Osama raid), then Ukraine may find that their supply from the US dries up. That 7 month period where the Republican Party was assisting Russia by preventing supply to Ukraine was very costly for Ukraine. So, the target would have to be worth more than all the future potential supply for it to be worth "asking forgiveness" for such a strike in a verboten area.

Russia's lack of air superiority is also allowing Ukraine more freedom of movement on the ground as well as allowing Ukraine to use its air assets for CAS. Incidentally, regarding quantatative easing (printing money), that started during the great recession of 2008+, it never stopped after the economy normalized. So, the fed has been fueling inflation since 2008 with nonstop QE.

Bakhmut wasn't anything special until Russia decided to make it a place where Ukraine could pound on them. So, Avdiivka had been built up as a defensive stronghold much longer than Bakhmut. Further hurting Russia is that Prigozhin and his mercenaries aren't in the picture now, thankfully, near Avdiivka. Icing on the cake is that Russia has burned through their artillery ammunition (and probably gun barrels) and no longer has the volume of fire that it did to precede the meat wave attacks. So, there's less suppression of Ukranian forces. A final factor hurting Russia is that there are currently 4 main areas of fighting that Russia needs to spread its resources across, instead of just the one main area during their assault on Bakhmut.

  49. Jake, you say they learn slowly. That's totally off base. These incidents are a demonstration of Russia's ability to destroy patriot missiles with their aircraft! Incidentally, once the attacks from the roaming launcher started, the glide bomb drops were from about 30 km. Now, they were up to 50 km away meaning the aircraft were much higher and faster to get the extra range. It wasn't helping because being higher just makes them easier to detect and track. Also, something else to consider is that NATO AWACS over the Black Sea or Turkey could theoretically guide AMRAAMs launched from NASMs via data link to the AWACS targets. The capability exists, although I don't know if the NASMs are integrated for that the way out aircraft launched AMRAAM are. It's unknown whether the patriot radar or other radar systems could also data link with NASMS to guide AMRAAM that are nowhere near the launchers. In other words, the Russian jets at high altitude are very easy to spot and the mobile NASM launcher could be right up near the front line and the missile is being guided by data link from the radar far away.
