….I couldn’t think of more opposite cultures: Even in ancient “more superstitious “ times, the Chinese were constantly inventing & learning — often far ahead of the European “learning curve” in matters of art & science….Native Americans, while having a valuable culture in its reverence for the environment, were usually hostile to change, never developed a written language, and preferred to live as their ancestors always had……
“Evaluating” cultures is always a tricky thing to do — depends upon whether one weighs a particular culture for the “value” it has brought to the wider world (say, engineering, medicine, literature, etc.) or, whether, “living simply,” without creating a ripple beyond one’s own doorstep is of equal value….
