  1. This lady is ignorant of cultural and religious differences. We already know what happened when Israeli and Palestinian are forced to live together. And that's just one example. There are people who cannot live with others because they have to have it their way.

Those living in student housing seem happy because they are a highly homogenous community -- similar age (late teens to 20's), same goal (education and beer), financially dependent (parental help or student loan). Try mixing a student house and nursing home together, and see if everyone is still happy.

Plebian Hero That's because either 1) the difference is not yet extreme (e.g. someone insists you dress a certain way or not eat certain food, or even wants to cut your head off because of who you are), or 2) the community hasn't been lived close enough (e.g. does your community share one kitchen? one bathroom?)

  6. Plebian Hero Here's my response to your 1st point: Therefore this video fails to discuss the VETTING process for building such housing. Should certain people be excluded? Who to include and exclude? To your 2nd point: If co-housing only means sharing communal space but not kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom (after all, these are what make up a house), then we already have numerous public spaces like parks, malls, and streets where people can mingle. Finally, as to Muslim, they stay low when they are the minority in a community but they rarely assimilate and they take over (jihad) when they finally can. Here's a quote from Winston Churchill “Individual Muslims may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it."

  8. Plebian Hero As in any community, the key to harmony, let alone happiness, is about rights and responsibilities (i.e. social contract, written or unwritten). If you rely solely on people's free will to move in and out, you won't be able to handle the free-loaders: those who only enjoy the goodies of such co-housing but not the duties. In the end, responsible people are driven out and co-housing becomes a dump. (We've seen a lot of these in public housing.) And if you don't have some sort of screening process (if the word vetting is too sensitive), there will be no private or quasi private community center since everyone can move in.

So, Miss Kim, if people in your community care about your vegetarian need and prepare vegetarian food specially for you, as you mentioned, are you willing to dress in burka all the time, even in hot summer, or change your sexual preference because you care about certain people's religious need in your community?

  13. Plebian Hero You are assuming if someone is rich enough to enter a highly desirable and expensive co-house, they must be good participants. But there's NO correlation between being rich and being responsible. Rich people buy into expensive arrangement so they have better niceties to take advantage of. Then you suggest "policing" (reactive) which is less effective than "vetting" (preventive). By and large, the concept of a market (capitalism) you introduced is contradictive to that of co-housing (socialism).

Plebian Hero The speaker opposes the isolation of suburban homes but fails to give credit to the comfort, freedom, and independence that come with it. Looking at history, suburban lifestyle became the way it is, fairly recently in the West, naturally and organically because people truly love it. The speaker also admits co-housing is an age-old way of living (we've tried it before and chose otherwise!) and still existent in non-Western society (because they can't afford it.) If she ever visited a poor 3rd-world village where most things are communal, she'll find out these people dream to have their own houses as privacy is luxury.
