  8.  @dextercadelina7953  Republic of China (now Taiwan) first drew up the 11 Dash Line in 1947. Even the USA acknowledged the 11 Dash Line, and the Americans reminded the Philippines at its independence in 1946 that the Spratlys was not Philippine territory, both to not anger Chiang Kai-shek in China and because the Spratlys were not part of the Philippines per the 1898 treaty Spain signed with America.

Under the status quo agreement, no construction materials are allowed to fortify the Sierra Madre. But the Philippines has violated this agreement and sent supply ships to reinforce the rusting hull of the grounded vessel.

  11.  @nixtrope  You stand for the Philippines, then can't I stand for China? You've been calling it the "West Philippine Sea" but that's not the internationally recognized name for the sea. The region is known internationally as the South China Sea. As for territorial waters, the 1898 Treaty of Paris marked out Philippine's maritime boundary and they did not include the South China Sea as within Philippine boundary.

In 2012, the Philippines had signed a Code of Conduct on the South China Sea to resolve territorial disputes through friendly consultations and negotiations by sovereign states, but by bring the matter to the Hague, Philippines had violated the code of conduct by involving 3rd party arbitration.

Philippines choose not to settle the territorial dispute bilaterally, instead choosing 3rd party arbitration then China has the right to refuse arbitration. In 2006, China made a declaration in accordance with Article 298 of Section 3 of Part XV of UNCLOS not to allow the convention to rule over matters of sovereignty. Many countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, France, Canada, and Spain had made similar declarations so China is not alone in refusing 3rd party arbitration.

Fact vs. imagination." 1734 Maurillo Velarde Map was drawn up by the Spanish for the Philippines. Drawn by foreigners who had no knowledge of local geography and political boundaries, so how's that a concrete claim? Being colonizers, of course the Spanish would try and incorporate more territory into their colony, whereas the 9-Dash Line was drawn up by local Chinese who lived in the region.

  17.  @alucard6675  Pag Asa Island (Thitu Island) was inhabited by fishermen from Champa in present-day Vietnam and the Chinese, not the Philippines. After the Japanese WW2 surrender, the island was returned to Republic of China, and Chinese officials placed national markers on the major islands, drew up detailed maps of them, renamed them, and published the Location Map of the South China Sea Island. But in 1971 there was a typhoon so the Chinese garrisons withdraw to Taiping Island to avoid the storm. The Philippines saw this empty space and organized the troops to land on the island on 29 July and renamed the island "Pag-asa Island". So the Island was originally Chinese before it was seized by the Philippines after a storm.

Ukraine is being edged on by the US to go against Russia, even though there's no mutual defense treaty between them. And the Ukraine conflict is literally affecting the rest of the world even as we speak, but hardly anyone cares about the Philippines at this point in time. Also, the West Philippine Sea is not the international recognized name for that region. It is known internationally as the South China Sea.

Drawn up by foreigners who had no knowledge of the local geography and political boundaries (and without consulting neighboring countries) so how's that a legal claim? As a colonizer, of course the Spanish would want to draw large boundary for their colony, but how does that make it legal? Meanwhile, China's claims are based on historical claims and drawn up by local Chinese officials.

Taiwan goes by the name Republic of China and the 65-year old fisherman's name is Chinese (Hong Shicheng) written in Chinese characters (洪石成). As for what response, like I said, there's always the option of water cannon, rather than actual gunfire resulting in death of the fisherman. Meanwhile, no Filipino fisherman have been shot to death by Chinese coastguard.
