+Nikola Tasev Regarding US exceptionalism, I would like to add that the United States withdrew from International Court of Justice in 1986 and will only accept the court's jurisdiction only on a case-by-case basis. Sounds hypocritical, coming from a country that promotes human rights.
17
+Sam Hofman Some of the US treaties are questionable, such as Hawaii fighting for independence from US but losing and being taken over by the US. US airbases in Okinawa Japan was built as a result of Japanese WW2 surrender, so you can't really say that US had Japanese permission. It as part of Japanese surrender condition. China does not have these treaties because it claimed those territories historically before international law of the sea was created.

+DanDanDirt China is a member of UN Convention Law of the Sea and so far, has not broken any law. The Permanent Court of Arbitration that Philippines went to is not even an agency of United Nations. It should have submitted the complaint to the International Court of Justice, which is part of UN.
9
Duterte in effect, just prevented a potential war from breaking out in South China Sea.

Actually, China made declaration with the UNCLOS in 2006 not to accept some of the compulsory procedures provided. Many countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, France, Canada, and Spain made similar declarations. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippines_v._China#Optional_exceptions_to_applicability_of_compulsory_procedure)

Many other claimants claim territories in the South China Sea as well. Otherwise, there will be no dispute at all right?
5
+Aaron Glicco China and Philippines had enjoyed good relations prior to this dispute. China did not invade the Philippines like Imperial Japan, and there are many joint interactions between Philippines and China.
4
Ernest Tsim If you read my comment carefully, Hong Kong and Taiwan are part of China during Qing dynasty and even today, they are recognised as being part of China. Nothing false with this statement.

+YuFan Huang Many Chinese mainlanders know what the government has done and aren't "brainwashed". The government can't control all 1.3 billion people to think in same way. Everyone will have a different opinion of the government's actions just like how other people from other countries have different opinion of their own governments. As for those issues, Western media does not always portray the entire issue without. If you know Chinese you have the luxury of researching Chinese articles on those issues and using them to cross reference with Western articles. You can even visit those places and talk to the locals to find out how they feel about the government.

If US and China goes to war, it would probably be similar to US against Soviet Union in Cold War where they fight proxy war using some unfortunate country as the battleground.
3
US needs to get permission because it is occupying other host country. China is building in its own territory so it doesn't require permission.
3
+Jason Boom If you look at Philippine independence declaration in 1946, the Americans drew the national boundaries of Philippines and did not include the disputed islands as part of Philippines territory. Only in 1970s did President Marco began incorporating those territory as part of Philippines.
3
It would be in the US's best interests to reduce its involvement in wars in the future. Wars are very expensive affairs and usually reduce PR with other countries and produces stress on soldiers with post trauma disorders and increased chances of suicide. China has been peaceful for 30+ years which is one reason why it is able to progress rapidly. It spends money on its economy instead of spending it on wars.
3
+Rizvi Redwan China hardly follows communist ideology. It is in fact, more capitalist that some of the democratic states.

I like how this guy gets so many likes and comments on his post. All he needed to do was to state his nationality.

+Left Right President Bush's invasion of Iraq was actually illegal according to US Secretary Kofi Ahman. But US membership was not revoked either.
2
+Alexander Braatz Chinese government is also doing this because Chinese netizens are complaining about Chinese fishermen, who have been fishing there for ages and suddenly getting arrested by Philippine and Indonesian coastguards.
2
Eggsn Bakon The other countries had not been sharing for quite some time. This is matter of sovereignty so why would any country share its borders? Hong Kong and Taiwan were part of China during Qing dynasty and even today they are recognised as part of China.
2
China made declaration according to UNCLOS in 2006 not to accept any of the procedures provided for in section 2 of the Convention. Many countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, France, Canada, and Spain made similar declarations to reject any of the procedures. (Source:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippines_v._China#Optional_exceptions_to_applicability_of_compulsory_procedure)

James Russell If I remembered, When Hawaii voted to join, the voters were mostly American soldiers in Hawaii and their families. Native Hawaiians were not allowed to vote unless they become US citizens. Regarding Imperialism, this is the double standards between the US and China. US is allowed to keep its territories because there was no law back then. China also claimed its islands back then when there was no law, but fast forward to future and it is suddenly illegal to build in its own territories. There were no territorial claims made back then too. Can you see the double standards applied to US and China?

China produces good like smartphones, computers, sneakers etc cheaply so that the cost of living in other countries remains low. Think of all the money that millions of people save each day by buying cheaper goods.
2
+Turkey Wine Don't blame China for taking jobs. Its the big MNCs that choose to the country with cheapest labor for setting up factories. Other countries with cheaper labor, such as India or Vietnam, are also going to compete for jobs. In short, China may give up the jobs, but the jobs may go to India or Vietnam instead of back to the US. Depends on the MNCs.
2
Turkey Wine Indeed. Chinese people are also usually against child labour but according to Confucius, supporting parents is part of filial piety so that's why the government does not enforce it strictly. Forced labour is always illegal in Chinese law.
2
Ima SuperPerson China doesn't need US approval to do whatever it wants. It built those bases as it saw fit to. So far, China treated the US like trading partner, but if US treat China like enemy then don't be surprise if we treat US same way.
2
US forces in Vietnam withdraw after taking some minor losses during Vietnam war. Chinese forces took heavy losses in Korean war against US, UK, Canada, Australia etc. but held on long enough for it to become a stalemate.
2
+EastCoastMusic 79 China is only using its power to defend its sovereignty, not invading other countries.
2
People who think Chinese people are controlled by the government, should really start asking Chinese people exactly how much "control" the government has over them.
2
+justice and vengence So, you are saying that free speech and freedom of expression can only be observed by someone else outside the system? How then, do you actually know you are free? Are you outside the system?
2
+justice and vengence Alrght then. Since I am also talking to you right now, that means that I too should be free right?
2
Skyried These new generation of Chinese are English educated and most have been overseas. They know the political systems of both their homeland and other countries. Surely they are entitled to their own opinions. Most acknowledged that Chinese government is no perfect, but neither is it completely unviable. There's nothing wrong with not having an opinion. Ordinary people may choose not to discuss politics if they want to, right? That's why democracy sometimes have eligible voters who choose not to vote. It depends on the individual.

+Dragon Cocplayer In Chinese, 精虫 (Jīng Chóng) would translate to as "Sperm".

US has biggest military spending it the world. It has to acquire some "return on investment" from such a big expenditure if you know what I mean.
1
+Kevin C Most Western media tend to portray negative aspects of China and ignore the positive things.
1
Chris Read Tibet actually improved under China. Tibet is mountainous, inaccessible region, so Chinese built a railway to allow easier access to the region. The old Dalai Lama practices serfdom which Chinese abolished because it also included horrible punishments such as cutting off hands.
1
James Russell China's formal claim was in 1947 and back then, Philippines, Vietnam etc did not protest at all. Then after a few years those countries began taking over territory and suddenly Western media paints China in demonic light for reclaiming those territories back
1
James Russell The Western media hardly ever describes other countries activities in the area, such as Vietnamese building barracks, gun emplacements and airstrips that can launch military aircraft, long before China built its bases there. Regarding the current situation, China and the ASEAN countries have at least agreed to shelf the issue aside for the time being and focus on joint development instead.
1
ShadowSlayer US invades existing islands instead of creating them.
1
James Russell Native Hawaiians fought for independence from the Americans but lost. The other Pacific islands also had their own inhabitants.
1
Hanayo Please eat me China is not taunting its neighbors. China and the ASEAN countries have agreed to set aside the dispute for the moment and focus instead on joint developments that mutually benefit both parties
1
Turkey Wine Trump will want to do that, but he will first have to convince the MNCs that I mentioned in my previous post. Like I mentioned, MNCs are by the very nature, not bound to any one country. Trump will have to find ways to attract them to the US.
1
Turkey Wine Why is China ripping you off? China makes cheap products like smartphone, computer, sneakers etc affordable so the cost of living is lower. Think of all the money people saved buying cheaper goods.
1
Turkey Wine The government has raised the quality of Chinese products since then to ensure better safety. If not, many countries would have boycotted Chinese products long ago and China would never had gotten the economic development it enjoys today. The government was new to product quality control at that time and has slowly developed a better framework for product safety to ensure that Chinese goods can still be sold.
1
Turkey Wine Actually, producing fake rice is more costly than producing real rice. All those fake food scares after the milk powder scandal were made by people wanting to capitalize on China's fake food scandal. So far, there have been no confirmed reports of fake rice poisoning cases, so its safe to conclude that it was a hoax. Different people have different expectations of working conditions. Chinese workers live close to the workplace and food and housing are provided. As for child laborers, China forbids children under 16 from working, but some families are so poor that children will want to work to make ends meet.
1
+Atmsk US has a history of invading countries for resources like oil. Maybe they want to capture a share of the resources in the area?
1
***** China's most recent claim was in 1947, after Philippines independence in 1946. How is that considered hundreds of years ago? If Philippines has objections then why didn't they voice it out in 1947 when China made the claim? This only makes China look like bad guy here and the Western media is biased against China.
1
kwazooplayingguardsman The 1947 claim is based on the older century map. so do you say it was claimed in 12th century, or in 1947? China has been making consistent claims throughout the years so which year do you want to be the official one? Like the others said, US did not ratify UNCLOS and French never had control over the Spratlys.
1
Anjelica Parana The use of past maps is to simply solidify the foundation for China's claim in 1947, that's all. I can't possibly remember every historical map of China.
1
ohmytin I didn't assume you were American. I was just pointing out a possible move for the US. Maintaining military bases in other countries like in Japan and S. Korea is expensive, especially if the countries don't pay for the upkeep. China is working hard to raise the living standards of the remaining poor people. Building the bases is a way to safeguard China's economic future as billions of dollars flow through that region and most of it belongs to China.(Source:https://static.businessinsider.com/image/54e66f606bb3f77c0a018299/image.jpg)
1
ohmytin China has been victim of Japan so it is unlikely that China will follow the path of Japan. You are taking my words and deliberately interpreting it wrongly.
