BuildersUS The conflicts in Iran and Afghanistan in the early 21st century are thought to be the most financially expensive wars in history, with a cost to the United States of $6 trillion. Most countries would not define China's market as a free market. The government controls what goes in and out of China to protect local companies. US and other countries may have contributed to China's growth, but it was done on Chinese terms.

+Canadian Sikh If China was like Britain, then many people outside of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore will be speaking Chinese (Mandarin) as an official language like how English is today.

+iheb ammar I agree with you. There is just too much going on in the world for any one country to play police to. The best of intentions can still result in the greatest harm.

+ChaosFireBit They should. But the Japanese signed the treaty after WW2 to give up all its occupied territories.

Fart Inhaler China has historical claim to these territories 70 years ago. At that time, no other countries objected to Chinese control over these territories and only recently did the disputes over the sovereignty arise.

Fart Inhaler Exactly. Without inhabitants, it would be fundamentally different from what Britain and US did to inhabited countries. China did not just assumed it was, they made a proclaimation and no other countries objected at that time. What do you mean historical claims mean nothing? China controlled that region even before the resources were discovered. China's handling may not be good but otherwise it will lose its historic claim. Vietnam was the first to built bases, barracks, gun emplacements and airstrips in the region so why is China being blamed for militarizing the region?

Fart Inhaler If scientific evidence is insufficient then what would constitute hard evidence? Pieces of Chinese pottery found on those islands? Written reports by Chinese historians? Indeed, there was no interest in the region 60 years ago. China would prefer that there was no dispute today in that region. Fishing in the area was shared by all the neighbouring countries. But Philippine and Vietnamese coast guard began chasing away Chinese fishermen. Indonesian coast guard even illegally detained fishermen and blew their ships up. Why is China claiming the region 60 years ago considered in the same category as US colonisation of America and the British empire? This is considered relatively recent compared to those eras.

***** I believe people should at least make an effort to understand how other political systems are run before assuming that they are inferior.

ntdonat Indeed. An interesting parallel to US capitalism is that Chinese economy is more capitalist than most capitalist countries, despite the government having communism in its name. It is good for political systems to learn from one another instead of proclaiming which one is better, like when Deng Xiaoping introduce capitalism to Chinese economy.
