In the end, the KMT failed to unify China and had to flee the mainland to Formosa (Taiwan). Also, during the KMT administration of China, Republic of China was capitalist too but after the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1912, China underwent a period of instability and disrupted economic activity. The KMT seized control of private banks in 1936 and replaced the China's currency by stamping out the earlier silver and gold-backed notes that had made up China's currency previously. However, this led to hyperinflation, as the KMT began printing notes en masse. Initially, a total of 1.4 billion Chinese yuan was issued in 1936, but by the end of the 2nd Sino-Japanese war some 1.031 trillion in notes was issued) So how did China experience growth and development under KMT? And you know why the USA abandoned KMT during the Chinese Civil War? Because KMT was corrupt, and pocketed some 750 million dollars worth of US military aid, until even the US president Harry Truman wrote that "the Chiangs, the Kungs and the Soongs (were) all thieves."

GFHK SDGM Tibet was part of China since 800 years ago when the Mongols conquered Kingdom of Thibet and Song Dynasty China and incorporated those territory into Yuan Dynasty China. Tibet broke free of China in 1913 but was eventually reunified with the mainland by 1951 and even Indian PM Nehru acknowledged Chinese sovereignty over Tibet so what makes you think the problem would not have existed?

@complexnucleus1087 India invaded and annexed Sikkim, Jammu & Kashmir, Goa and even recently, India had border dispute with Nepal, resulting in Nepalese police open fired and killed 1 Indian near Bihar.

@dhdy1213 Tibet was part of China since 800 years ago, when the Mongolians conquered Kingdom of Thibet and Song Dynasty China, and incorporated them into Yuan Dynasty China. The Manchurians did the same thing centuries later during Qing Dynasty.

@Progressive Republican During 19th century, British wanted to continue drinking Chinese tea, but China did not want what the West had to offer, so Britain waged two bloody wars with China, and forced China to buy opium from them at gunpoint, which we didn't want because it made us sick and was poisoning our people. Port cities like Shanghai were forced open to act as drug distribution hubs to spread the addiction throughout rest of China, and Hong Kong was taken from China and made into British colony. Even when Britain renounced its ownership over its former colonies, Hong Kong was not fully returned to China

Mao Zedong managed to unify China (which the previous Kuomintang administration of China from 1911-1949, failed to achieve even after 37 years) in 1949 and proclaimed the People's Republic of China. He turned the Chinese Communist Party with a mere strength of 50 members at the beginning of 1921, to one of the world's largest political party today, with more than 80 million members (about the population size of Germany)

I do know that Hong Kong did NOT experience democracy under British colonial rule rule. No elections by Hong Kong were ever held, while it was British colony. Only after the Hong Kong handover to mainland China, were the first elections by Hong Kong ever held. So why people of Hong Kong still complain when they finally get to vote for their favorite leader in elections? Were any elections in Hong Kong ever held, prior to the handover to China?

China once tried 'democracy' when Dr Sun Yatsen overthrew Qing dynasty and established Republic of China in 1911. But China was divided into many provinces ruled by individual warlords, we lost control of Tibet, and the Japanese even invaded. In the end, Dr. Sun died without ever realizing a unified China under democracy. Next China tried 'communism' and Mao Zedong managed to unify China and proclaim People's Republic of China in 1949 (which the previous Kuomintang failed to achieve for 37 years!) and Tibet became part of China again. But while Mao Zedong was excellent tactician, he was poor governor and his policies for China were disastrous. This led to Mao making self-criticism and stepping down as state chairman. So China tried 'capitalism' when Deng Xiaoping opened China up and reformed economic policies in 1970s, and China progressed rapidly. But university students began protesting for more democratic reforms and Deng didn't want that so he sent the People's Liberation Army to stop the protests in 1989. Deng Xiaoping refused to admit his mistake even till his death. Now, China is following 'socialism with Chinese characteristics' under President Xi Jinping and its still too early to tell whether we will be successful. But it shows that China has tried various political systems to various degrees of success, and each Chinese leader had some vision of China that he wished to achieve. They all contributed to China in some way or another, so China is not suffering from 'political stagnation' that the West seems to be suffering from.

In the past, Hong Kong was a unique Chinese port city, a world finance center closest to mainland China, but today, Hong Kong has since fallen behind and been overtaken by rising mainland cities in the area like Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Ningbo-Zhoushan, and is facing similar levels of competition from mainland cities like Qingdao, Tianjin, Xiamen, Dalian, and so on. @basshunterdota625 China today is currently at peace and not at war with any country, since our last major conflict in 1979. Instead of making war, China is building infrastructure like roads, railways, highways, bridges, tunnels, powerstations, dams, ports, airports, etc and investing in developing countries like Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and also African countries like Nigeria, Kenya, Chad, Sudan, Ghana, Mozambique, Tanzania, etc. Whereas the United States is warmonger being involved in Gulf War, Iraq War, Afghan War, Libyan War, Syrian War, Yemen War, etc, even in the 21st century. USA is bombing in those Middle Eastern countries and enacting regime change by cutting off their "heads" (Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi, etc) and then installing their own US puppet governments in place.

@peabase Can I ask which personal freedoms has Beijing imposed upon Hong Kong people then? Hong Kong has laws that would be considered illegal in the mainland (such as supporting Falun Dafa) so how exactly are their freedoms being affected then? @mfmf100 Many Hong Kong graduates also seek job opportunities in the mainland, and some pick up Mandarin in order to do business with the mainland. Mandarin Chinese is also the most spoken language in the world (by number of speakers) and is also the official language of Singapore and Taiwan too, so generally there is greater incentive to learn Mandarin over Cantonese. And you specifically said "traditions" so why can't I mention that Hong Kong people practice Chinese traditions too? And if Hong Kong have all those institutions, then why are they so resentful of mainland China? China is the only country in the world willing to tolerate multiple political systems within our nation, under the One Country, Two Systems Policy. No other country in the world is willing to have two different political systems existing within its borders.

Those Umbrella protestors were mostly idealistic university undergrads, who've been raised in cloistered world of education, of textbook ideals and perfect political theories. They haven't even stepped out into the real working world, get a job, apply for housing, get married and settle down, yet these naive students somehow think they already know how to govern Hong Kong already? Look at the rest of the working adults of Hong Kong, sending the kids to school and going to work as per normal. They weren't protesting because they know Hong Kong's situation better than these idealistic undergrads.

The Umbrella Protests were by naive Hong Kong university undergrads, who've been cloistered inside a world of education, of textbook ideals and perfect theories regarding democracy. These protestors haven't even step out into the real working world of adults, get a job, get an apartment, settle down and raise kids, yet these idealistic students already think they know how to govern Hong Kong?

@Bruno Pereira About Democracy, why do you believe that allowing ordinary people to participate in political decision making is a wise idea? Ordinary people are fickle and they make poor voters for several reasons: -Ordinary people may not vote responsibly (i.e. They may not turn up to vote, or they submit blank votes) -Ordinary people may base their vote on emotions, not logic (i.e. Many British don't like immigrants, so majority voted for Brexit) -Ordinary people are susceptible to foreign influences (i.e. Russian interference in US elections) -Ordinary people may simply lack awareness of the country's real political situation, to make informed decisions regarding the country's future. There's a host of other problems associated with democracy, so why not let those who know how to govern, govern? That's what China is doing and look at how successful China is.

@mfmf100 Cantonese is also spoken in mainland like in Guangdong province too. And how exactly are Hong Kong culture and traditions different from the mainland? They celebrate Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) Dragonboat Festival, Lantern Festival and other Chinese festivals too isn't it?

Its not perfect system and not easy, but it has produced great leaders like President Xi, who has 30-40 years of political experience.

@williamplayfair364 I read Peng Shuai's post (full translation available on Reddit) and while Peng Shuai was emotional and had a tumultuous, on-and-off relationship with a much older man, spanning several years in fact, there are no allegations of sexual assault in her post. She even wrote in her post that the sex was consensual. Peng Shuai wrote: Taking into consideration the affection I had for you seven years ago, I agreed... yes, we had sex. Romantic attraction is such a complicated thing that explain it clearly. From that day on, I renewed my love for you. Throughout my time with you after that, purely based on our interactions, you were a very good person, and you treated me well. So according to Peng Shuai's post, she consented to sex so it turns out that the allegations of sexual assault made by WTA are not true after all.

And what "Tibetan President" are you talking about? Which Tibetans voted for this "President" you tell me? And which country recognise this so-called "Tibetan President"? Not only do they claim all of mainland China (including Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Manchuria, etc) but also territory currently under the control of Mongolia, Burma, Bhutan, India, Japan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia and Tajikistan. @Srikar-on9ib Firstly, China does not claim all of Arunachal Pradesh, only a small part of the region known as Tawang, which is historically part of Tibet that's all. Chinese diplomat even offered a deal to India and make concessions in Aksai Chin if India cedes part of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. So why should China give up our ancestral lands of Tibet when it's an inalienable part of Chinese history? Look, even the Tibetans themselves signed the Seventeen Point Agreement for the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet (中央人民政府和西藏地方政府关于和平解放西藏办法的协议) for short on 1952, affirming Chinese sovereignty over Tibet. So there's a document signed by Tibetans that Tibet is part of China after all.

@digital945 Why you Indians allow the British to partition British India into two countries on 1947, forming a separate sovereign country, Pakistan? Next you Indians supported Bangladesh independence from East Pakistan, forming another sovereign country and incurring Pakistan suspicion towards India. Each separation only weakens the once strong country and once separated, you can't control those territory and they may grow to become thorn in your side. That's why China fight so hard to hold on to our territory of Tibet, Xinjiang, Hong Kong, etc. Because we don't want to end up like India and Pakistan; Brother states that constantly fight among yourselves, while Britain secretly laughs at the situation in South Asia.
