The SAS used Vickers K Guns not Lewis Guns. The Vickers K had replace the Lewis as an aircraft gun in the 1930s and was itself obsolete by 1941.

The magazine was inherited from a forerunner design, the Maclean machine gun. Where the magazine was kept clear of the ground by its tripod mount. So many parts of the Maclean needed to be altered to create the Lewis gun that, I think, Col Lewis just left the magazine as it was because it worked.

Rather than firing it from the hip, a common way to use the Lewis Gun while moving was to rest it on the shoulder of a man in front of the gunner. Which must have been fun for the "human bipod", in an era before ear protection.

@markfryer9880 British soldiers frequently fired Lewis Guns from the hip during WW1. They just had to have a mug of tea afterwards.

During WW1 all the Allied air arms used .303 Vickers and Lewis Guns. Including Italy and Japan. They were just later in replacing the Lewis as an observers gun than everybody else. Including the British.
