  1. Even if your loophole is armoured your head is still behind. The Germans developed AP bullets specifically to pierce loophole plates. With this system your heads below the trench lip. So a bullet would have to go through sandbags, a yard or two of Earth, and the wooden breastwork without being deflected. Not impossible that you'd be hit, but unlikely.
